I would suggest that everyone check out this singer from the Bay Area named Ledisi. She's put out two independent albums, "Soulsinger" and "Feeling Orange, Sometimes Blue". "Soulsinger" is great. "Feeling Orange..." is legendary. I state my case for this great singer:

1) An alto, who may have the best vocal technique in the last 20 years. Reminds me of Jean Carne with power.
2) Every song is band backed. Her songwriting partner, keyboardist Sun Manning, plays a mean Fender Rhodes and B3 Organ.
3) If Ledisi's in you town, don't question it. Go see her!!!! This woman's a complete showstopper who has the crowd in the palm of her hands!!!!
