Hi all,

I have a question regarding personal interaction between label artists and members of the band. We are working with an upcoming singer that is about to sign her first contract. She has been groomed and producers have been brought in to help get her project off of the ground. Of course she is a good looking lady and one of her backing band members has taken a severe liking to her.

This is already causing friction between the label people and the artist as well as with the producers!! (No it isnt me!!)

My question is this. Has anyone else had a situation where the artist has fallen for part of the band and what came of it? Does this type of thing cause problems or does it matter?

I know that a minor fuss is already starting about a "date" that the two have gone on and the label people are NOT happy about it!!

Any thoughts?

As a record executive I can understand the label people's apprehension. They are investing time and resources into the artist's work yet they fear that a relationship of this type would result in the band member having control (or influence) over the artist's direction.

To give you an example close to home, Latin singer Thalia (who is signed to EMI)admitted in Billboard magazine that she would turn to her husband for advice on certain recordings she is working on. The problem - her husband is Tommy Mottola, who at that time still had his job as the head of Sony Music! If I was Alain Levy of EMI, I would've hit the roof reading that item.

I would have advised the artist and the musician to keep their involvement private and confidential so that such fears wouldn't be realized. Then if she becomes successful (or not), they can become more open about their relationship.

Don't get me wrong - there are many artists who have even married their musicians (Pat Benatar married the lead guitarist of her band & they have two beautiful daughters)& made their relationship work. I feel that it's too early in the game for the singer & musician to be even dating.

Thanks Mr Kev!!

I feel responsible for this mess because I picked the band members to help her for the live work!! I didnt see this coming at ALL!! I get a call last night at 11:30 about this and that I am responsible!!!

I honestly didnt even know that they liked each other!! But the main producer who has worked with countless acts has already said NO INTERACTION BETWEEN BAND AND ARTISTS!!! I have already talked to the singer and she is in love with the guy! So what can I do about that?? I tried to do something nice and it is becoming a nightmare.

Anyway thanks for your thoughts!! BTW What label are you with?

I have a buddy who grew up in Muskegon, MI and for some reason seems to have an aphorism for every occasion. When discussing the possibility of asking a co-worker out, he immediately came up with "Never get your meat where you get your bread".

I only heard this one second hand and still almost choked on my Diet Pepsi from laughter.

Look at all the female artist who had trouble in this business by having husbands, whether qualified or not, handling their career.

Look at all the male artists who had trouble in the business by having {lawers, accountants, friends, parents, etc., pick one}, whether qualified or not, handling their career. :)
