Some of the prettiest soul songs are about a pretty sad subject: cheating. What are some good "cheat" songs, yinz guys and gals? It can be a song that kind of "encourages" it too, like

My all time favorite has to be "Agony and Ecstasy" by Smokey Robinson. Also "Tell Me Tomorrow" is a good one.

Umm... forgot to complete a thought, that should read "It can be a song that "encourages" it too, like "Come Round Here (I'm The One You Need)."

But for me, the biscuit goes to..

If I Could See The Light In The Window - this to me was really the most daring song I had ever heard in the 70's - How on earth could you get away with "...watching to see if the shades were down, to see if the coast was clear...and...to check if her old man was gone" I was really shockable in those days! HAHA

Major Bill already stated the greatest southern soul cheatin' song ever, James Carr's "The Dark End Of The Street", rife with guilt and an inability to control illicit desire.

Here's a couple more:
"Are You There (With Another Girl)"-Dionne Warwick
"You've Been Cheatin'"-The Impressions
"No Reply"-The Beatles

Again, all these recent southern indie soul/r&b/blues cd's are full of cheating songs these days - motels, Jodies, back-door "santas", me cheating on my wife, my wife cheating on me, back street hiding, slippin' & slidin' etc.

Sidebar....
....Aparently Walter Scott, who sang lead on "The Cheater" (Bob Kuban and the In-Men), was murdered in a lovers triangle that involved Scott's wife and a Jim Williams. Both Ms. Scott, and Williams were arrested for Scott's murder, but I don't know how the trial came out.

RE:Walter Scott. The way I heard it,the Jim Williams guy was a plumber. Poor Walter's corpse was discovered in a septic tank where Mr. Williams "buried" it. When "unearthed",the corpse was badly decomposed, but the yellow polyester leisure suit worn by the deceased Walter was still intact. I do not know the outcome of the trial either. PEACE -Major Bill

Top of pageBottom of page   By Mark Speck (65.56.221.87) on Friday, February 28, 2003 - 12:11 am:

A little more on the Sir Walter Scott (Walter Notheis) murder: seems that Williams' wife died in an auto "accident" around the same time that Williams and Joanne (Walter's wife) carried out Walter's murder. They were convicted of both murders--don't know if either of them received the death penalty.

Best,

Mark

I think one of the greatest "cheat" songs ever written is I Don't Wanna Do Wrong by Gladys Knight and the Pips.

mmmmmm I don't wanna do wrong
but you've been gone away so long

What about bisexual cheating. There are two song that come to mind:

Barbara Mason "Another man"

Peggy Scott Benson "Bill"

In both cases the man is caught by his girl/wife cheating with another man.

I wonder if there are any other songs with this type of cheating.

Around St. valentine's day my radio programme features a mix of romantic slush and a selection of Lying, cheating and a mean mistreatng songs many of which are named above. My favourites include She Didn't Know she kept on talking by Dee Dee warwick , The Shirelles Baby it's You featuring the Chorus "Cheat Cheat" and I never Loved a man Aretha Franklin altho I think he's more of a liar. I bought anoyther copy of Clarence Carter's making Love (At the dark end of the Street) where he turns the James Carr hit into another song. Slip away by Clarence is also a notable cheating song

I think my favorite is Gladys Knight & the Pips' version of Bill Withers' "Who Is She (And What Is She To You)", because Gladys make it quite confrontational.
Imagine the poor guy in front of Gladys asking him:
"Who, what, where and how
I'm asking you to tell me now
all about!"
