Hello SD'ers,

On the live performance at the end, Stevie starts up again with the harmonica and I hear someone in the background. What is he saying? To me it sounds like he's saying "what key, what key?"

Can anyone help out please?

Thanks,

From what I understand Mary Wells' bass player was out setting up and he yelled "what key what key".I think his name is Joe Swift.

I had thought that it was Jamerson on bass for the 1964 (?) Motown Review tour asking the key. I know that who ever the pianist was did a I V I (one five one) in the key of Bb to asnwer whoever it was asking the question.

Come to think of it, it makes sense that if they were changing bassist it might have been Jamerson playing behind Stevie and the guy mentioned in the earlier post coming onstage next. Interesting thought cause if it were Jamerson, he would have just played the song and they did not change key.

ACCORDING TO "STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN" THE ORIGINAL BOOK BY DR. LICKS IT IS NOT JAMES JAMERSON YELLING FRANTICALLY "WHAT KEY, WHAT KEY IN THE BREAKDOWN/RESTART OF "FINGERTIPS PART TWO".

In the book "Blind Faith" it states that Stevie was suppose to wrap up the song "Fingertips". Stevie was known to be a bit spontaneous. he continued to play the song. In the meantime, the bass player for the next artist entered the stage. This was Mary Wells' bass player. He realized that Stevie was'nt leaving the stage.the band had to do a little adlibbing to bring the song back to the chorus. The bass player yelled out "what key, what key." The pianist gave him a I VI I hint.

"Fingertips" was recorded at The Regal Theatre in Chicago during The Motortown Revue. I was there, but I don't remember the date. This particular tour was historic in that it was the only time The Supremes ever played The Regal.

dvdmike:
The Supremes only played the Regal once? And you were there....
Do you recall what song(s) they performed?

"My Heart Can't Take It No More" was the current single at the time. They were still known as the "no-hit Supremes".
