As a solo artist....almost everything on "Off The Wall", (IMHO) his most musically sound and consistant project to date.

Never Can Say Goodbye.
Michael put that song across better than most adults could have. That cut really let Michaels' true heart and talent shine. Go back and listen to it and see what a heavy he truely is.

I have many versions of Never Can Say Goodbye from Rahshan Roland Kirk to Gloria Gaynor (God, what extremes!)and I agree with you - the J5's original was more "adult" than any one I've heard since. When they performed it live on the Flip Wilson Show (mid 1971), Michael had viewers in the palms of his ungloved hands.

"Never Can Say Goodbye" is my ALL TIME FAVORITE!!! That boy had chops waaaaaaay back when.
I also like "We're Almost There," "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough," "Rock With You," and "Got To Be There."
This is a great thread because sometimes in the midst of all the "weirdness" people forget that behind the icon, there was this little boy/young man/king of pop who could sing the heck out of anything with an absolutely unfair amount of talent. He's been relevant to every generation since he's come out as a result of all that talent.

THE J-5 VERSION OF "WHO'S LOVIN' YOU" IS ONE OF THE BEST VOCAL PERFOMANCES IN R&B HISTORY IMHO. THE FEELING THAT MICHAEL PUT INTO THAT VOCAL WOULD BE A CHALLANGE FOR A VOCALIST TWICE HIS AGE AT THE TIME. (I BELIEVE HE WAS 12).

Tony B - I concur with everything you say! "Who's Lovin' You" is great.
Do you ever hear the 1991 release of a vintage 1971 live Jackson 5 performance of the song? Whoever mixed it really made the instruments big - big drums - big bass. It's actually quite exciting.
