AT LAST!!!! I,m really happy for the Funks. All of these years and look what happens!! TWO GRAMMYS!!
P.S. Myself and probably everyone on this forum would have prefered to hear the FUNKS kick out the jams instead of the the New York philharmonic playing backup band to a moaning, caterwalling, guy sitting at the piano proclaiming his angst to the world. Man, where's the hook?? WE WANT THE FUNKS!! WE WANT THE FUNKS!!!

Congrats to all involved in SITSOM including the Funk Brothers.
The only thing that would have made the night sweeter would have been a live broadcast performance from the Funks. Yet, being that this is the first time the Grammys have been in NYC in a few years, I could understand why the theme of this years' awards had a "New York state of mind" (forgive me, Billy Joel).
There's always next year...especially if the Funks make a new album this year.
Peace,
Kevin Goins - KevGo
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Monday, February 24, 2003 - 11:43 am: |
KevGo - I can't believe they had a "New York state of mind." We think of New York as having some of the best talent and music. That is not what we heard last night.

By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Monday, February 24, 2003 - 12:02 pm: |
Sis:
You misread my posting.
What I was saying is that I understood why this show carried a New York City-based theme because many of those who were sharing the hosting duties and performing are New Yorkers & New Jersey folks (even this year's Grammy poster has a backdrop of NYC). We haven't had the Grammys here in the Big Apple for many years because of reasons too politically silly & ridiculous to repeat. I realize that NYC has some of the finest talent in the world (hell, I work in the music industry here in NYC!) and I would be the first to applaud the efforts of all who participated last evening. My posting was NOT meant to be negative in any way shape or form.
I guess I should just go back to work...

The only thing that could be better if Chaka Khan and the Funk Brothers had performed on the show. It would have livened up what I thought was a pretty terrible show performance wise. Think of how wonderful it would have been for the great musicians of Motown if they had done sort of tribute.
I thought it shocking that people that could have livened up what was an empty show musically (with the exception of Bruce, James Taylor and Yo Yo Ma, Simon and Garfunkel, Norah Jones) had their categories not shown on TV. When Aretha Franklin stepped out on the podium with Bonnie Rait, both of who did not perform, it was indicative of what was wrong with the show.
Michael

Cleo/Michael:
Re: Coldplay & Ashanti - as the great Sylbester Stewart once wrote, "Different strokes for different folks..."
As for the performances, they stuck to those who were nominated in their categories. It's funny that the performing nominees had recordings that sold very well, especially here in the Big Apple and the Grammys took place here..go figure.
You're right about the Funks - they should've performed. If the president of NARAS is gonna get up on stage and talk about the importance of preserving our musical heritage, then NARAS needs to show it by having living legends perform. While I do enjoy Simon & Garfunkel (I own all their albums and solo works), the Funks would've hammered that point home.

Funk Brothers, "Dr. Licks", HW, Chaka, and all involved...CONGRATULATIONS !!! There is no one more deserving ! (Now...I can't wait for the "Deluxe DVD set" and for the Funk Brothers tour to hit L.A.)

It really is too bad the Funks didn't play at the Grammys. The audience would have found out what Ben Harper did when he was backed up by the Funks for SITSOM. In the current issue of Relix magazine he describes performing with the Funk Brothers "like being backed up by a freight train" and "an amazing musical moment." Harper kissed the Apollo stage after his performance to show his appreciation for the history of the Apollo Theater and the Funks. The man knows he had the opportunity of a lifetime. And like Ben Harper, we're getting to enjoy them in their long overdue glory! Praise to the Funks!!

I saw Ben Harper kiss the stage of the Apollo after finishing his song with the Funks, that was a cool moment ...

Sue,
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all you've done on behalf of the Funks. You've kept their cause front and center for a long time. I applaud your stedfast dedication.

What's next for the funks?Would be great to see them on Letterman. When they tour who will be the vocalists?Has it been determined yet?
By Sue (205.188.209.38) on Monday, February 24, 2003 - 10:18 pm: |
Allen,
I'm only documenting what they are doing! But thanks...
Jon Pareles used up a paragraph of the New York Times' real estate to note the Funks' win.

Or here's the graf:
Rhythm-and-blues awards were also handed out early: to Ashanti, Mary J. Blige and Usher along with Ms. Arie and Mr. Wonder with Take 6.
"Standing in the Shadows of Motown," the documentary about the Motown studio band of the 1960's and early 1970's, won for both a soundtrack album and traditional R&B performance (backing Chaka Khan).

I would like to take a moment to also wish congradulations to another grammy winner--Solomon Burke. Mr. Burke deserves every bit of fame he gets.

We - us in the Funks section and everyone else in the room - raised the roof when Solomon got his.

Finally saw SITSOM last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The film really allowed the personalities of the musicians to shine through. Wonderful.

By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Thursday, February 27, 2003 - 06:55 pm: |
Or loaded on the Official site?
By HW (68.37.221.153) on Friday, February 28, 2003 - 07:21 am: |
Allan Slutsky made a wonderful speech - the longest of the entire night but too effin' bad, they deserved as long as they needed - for Grammy 1, then Babbitt and Jack Ashford spoke for Grammy 2. They were all interviewed backstage for grammy.com but I haven't seen it posted on their website yet. Ted Greenberg and I kept quiet so the Funks & Slutsky could have the floor as much as possible. I took pictures as often as I could without getting in the way of the press they also deserved. I am sure one of the guys will have a lot to say about the Grammy Awards once the air clears a bit. They are in Cleveland today for a performance at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. http://www.rockhall.com/museum/calendar.asp
Now I go back to further coughing. Where are those lemons?!?

At the after-party, somewhere in Manhattan at 1 AM, Jack Ashford had a chance to meet and talk boxing and jazz with one of his idols, Joe Zawinul, of Cannonball Adderley's legendary band (which JZ wanted us to remember more than anything), not to mention leader of Weather Report and his own many-times-Grammy-nominated band.
