Aretha is one of the few artists that I know of that can take a song recorded by someone else and make it a hit for herself. For example "You're All I Need" by (Tammi and Marvin), "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" by (Paul Simon). There are so many others she made her own hit, can you name others made by her. Or can you name other artists who have made hits from someone else's song.

Whitney Houston took Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" to a level of success that Dolly never could have imagined.
Elvis Costello covered Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding" but when obscure rocker Curtis Stigers' cover was included on "The Bodyguard" multi-platinum soundtrack, it made Nick a cool million.
Arguably the greatest garage rock and roll song ever, Van Morrison's "Gloria", was a hit on the West Coast by Van's group Them but Chicago's Shadows Of Knight rushed a cover out and stole Van's hit in the rest of the USA.

"Respect" wasn't done just by Otis and then Aretha, but in Detroit a huge version was by the Rationals ...many of us Keener rats thought theirs was the first version, with a fine vocal by Scott Morgan.

The Vontastics' song "YOU Can Work It Out" is not the same song as the Beatles' tune, which is "WE Can Work It Out".

However, the Vontastics did dent the pop chart with their cover of another Beatles classic, "Day Tripper" (also done by J.J. Barnes).

Also...
"The Sounds of Silence"--Simon & Garfunkel, remade by Peaches & Herb
"Yes I'm Ready"--Barbara Mason, remade by the Hesitations and later by Teri DeSario and KC
"Born Free"--Roger Williams, remade by the Hesitations
"Good Lovin'"--first in a non-hit version by Lemme B. Good, then covered by the Olympics, the Young Rascals, and the Grateful Dead
"Respectable"--the Isley Brothers, remade by the Outsiders
"On Broadway"--the Drifters, remade by George Benson
"Love Ballad"--LTD, remade by George Benson

more to come...

Best,

Mark

Don't forget Aretha singing:
I Say A Little Prayer
Son of Preacher Man (Dusty Springfield said when she heard Aretha's version, she wanted to cut her throat.)
A Brand New Me (one of my favorite Aretha redos and she used to tear this up live)
This Girl's In Love With You
Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time
With Pen In Hand and This Masquerade Is Over (from the Let Me In Your Life Album.

Let's face it no matter what this diva sings, it is her own. It made the Grammy's very frustrating last night when one of the greatest voices of all time came out to present an award rather than sing. Imagine if she had taken hold of one of the Bee Gees songs and sent Maurice right into heaven. Maybe the powers that be knew what they were doing, Aretha would have shown them all up.

I was racking my brain for a bad Aretha cover released as a single during her Atlantic heyday. Maybe "The Weight", but it's not too bad, and Duane Allman plays some interesting gee-tar on it. Nah! I talked myself out of it. It is actually pretty good, although my favorite version is the one recorded by The Band with the Staple Singers for "The Last Waltz".

Regards,
Ken

Livonia Ken:

Some "critics" when discussing Aretha have said that her version of Eleanor Rigby is bad. It is said that she emphasizes the wrong words in some of the lines. I say they are wrong, Aretha is not doing a self-pitying version of Eleanor Rigby (she tends to stay away from that kind of sentiment when recording) and wails that song into the stratosphere. I was happy some years ago when I saw an interview where Paul McCartney said he loved Aretha's versions of Long and Winding Road and Eleanor Rigby. When compared to everyone else, even when Ree is bad, she's good.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Reese (204.152.13.48) on Monday, February 24, 2003 - 03:57 pm:

Speaking of Aretha covers, with 20-20 hindsight, I bet she wishes that she had copyrighted her added lines to RESPECT:

"R.E.S.P.E.C.T."
"Find it what it means to me."
"R.E.S.P.E.C.T."
"Take care of T.C.B."

Those lines weren't in Otis Redding's original version. Yet, most covers of the song (after Aretha's) used those lines. Unfortunately, Otis Redding retains sole songwriter credit.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Livonia Ken (136.2.1.101) on Monday, February 24, 2003 - 04:19 pm:

Reese - I would say that Otis still deserves sole songwriting credit and Aretha deserves the hit.

Cleo - I was a little put off by the whole "I'm Eleanor Rigby" aspect of Aretha's version, but not enough to complain.

Regards,
Ken

The Rationals version of Respect does not use Aretha's added lines, I believe they follow Otis' vesion. I love all 3 versions, but we used to cover the Rationals version yeeeeeeeeeears ago!
