MIke,

Where are you getting your info from ?

I'll check later but I'm pretty sure that Nov.
1967 session with "Still Burning In My Heart"
was produced by Lou Courtney and Bob Bateman.

The "Ain't It The Truth" session was produced
by Ronnie Savoy.

"Baby What I Mean" was produced by Bob Gallo -
as far as I know Eric Gale didn't ever produce
- he was the session guitarist.

Top of pageBottom of page   By dvdmike (12.84.119.23) on Saturday, February 22, 2003 - 12:30 pm:

Davie, Bob Gallo was a pseudonym for Eric Gale, they were the same person. He also produced some Ben E. King sessions for Atco and was the owner of Talent Masters Studio in NYC.

As far as those production credits are concerned, you could be right, but the session dates are correct, I got the info mainly from Michel Ruppli's sessionography, The Atlantic Years. You might be able to find it in the main branch of your public library.

Mike,

You're gonna end up thinking I'm an argumentative
sod but - Bob Gallo and Eric Gale are not the same
person. For a start Eric Gale's black - Bob Gallo
isn't. I don't know how this myth started but that's what it is. Their careers took completely
different paths - all they really have in common is that both took part in some mid sixties sessions for Atlantic.

I haven't seen Michel Ruppli's Atlantic book yet
- it's a bit out of the price range of our library
system but I have seen his book on Blue Note
and that's a fine job.

If you're interested I'll post a rundown of Bob
Gallo's credits - his most recent work's been
with a singer called Jimmy Young who had a few
hits on the soul charts and opened for the Temps
among others.

I can't remember where I saw it in print, but I read where Eric Gale and Bob Gallo were the same guy. But if I'm incorrect, then, so be it. I'd much rather be happy than right.

Hi DVDMIKE!
Does the Ruppli's book say, which studio sessions it includes (as I have some different information on the Spinners from the producer) - session for the lead singer, for the rest of the group, for the rhythm section, for the background singers, for strings and horns ?

No, Ruppli's book was at certain points vague and incomplete. I got the Spinners info from three different sources, Ruppli's book, The Discofile (I forget the author's name) and the booklet that came inside the Spinners' anthology, "One Of A Kind Love Affair".

Mike,Davie,
I have the Drifters Book by Bill Millar and this is what it says etc regards your disagreement.

Still burning in my heart was another,by now familiar,Motown imitation with a complex arrangement and fuzz box guitar.

A reviewer quoted the record as 'Music to go mad by'.
One of the producers of therecord,Lou Courtney, had lived on dance crazes, whilst the other producer/arranger,Bob Bateman had come down in the world since producing Wilson Pickett's record,'Its too late'.

The Drifters(vocal)with Orchestra.
Robert Bateman and Lou Courtney(arr.and prod.)
A-13454-Still burning in my heart.
A-13455-I Need you now.
Recorded in New York City in 1967.

Regards a pseudonym of any description,it has stated under the pictures of all the various producers etc at this time and underneath the pic of
Bert Berns it clearly states that the name of Russell Byrd was used as the pseudonym whilst recording alone by Bert Berns.

Thats that,so its a case of which book to believe I suppose.
Anyway all the tracks no matter who was directly involved are all superb.
Regards
mel.

I have Bill Millar's book too, but it's incorrect in quite a few places. That's not a criticism - he simply wrote what was known or assumed at the time (1971!) His sessionography is - a valiant attempt, but there are inaccuracies, and omissions. (Hell, how would he know about the unissued recordings?!)

True enough Ritchie,
but its thanks to guys like yourself that I am thankful to be corrected when things are not 100%.

The knowledge on here is totally amazing, and I am glad that everyone is so forthcoming with it.

I am learning all the time mate,
Many thanks Ritchie.
Mel(hoping to one day have a book with
all the correct info in it).
