By the "West Side" could you focus my concept of "where you are at" by naming some major cross streets?
Please become my pal.

Hi Mike - Woodward Ave. divides Detroit into East and the West. I live a good ways West of Woodward. I'm almost to the City of Redford, City of Dearborn, and City of Livonia. The two big streets that I live are Southfield Freeway and Telegraph Road. I sometimes ride my bike to Rouge Park Golf Course and Tennis Course where all the good looking golfers hang out.
I'm already your pal. I just don't know what side of the bed you get up on daily. I'd hate to be on your wrong side. So I just sit back and wait for you to listen to your symphonies. :o)
Your Pal, Sis

I always seem to find myself passing through that area when I'm in Detroit.
I think it is still ok, but some parts of that neighbourhood can be beauty one minute, bomb site the next.
If you give me your old address I will try and photograph it for you when I'm there in May.

foxy,
There's something very homey about Detroit, as we all find ...p.s. Gordy doesn't own that house any more; it was sold. I'll give a link to the story when I find it.

I do hope you will find the time to come to the Soulful Detroit event in May. I don't know why you have not had contact with your family for so long and it is none of my business. Hopefully you'll see the event as a time to be reacquainted with the Motor City and good people like SisDetroit and David will be there as well.
Be well and please consider this invitation.

I grew up in the Livernois-Seven Mile area on the west side. Stubass and bmiller also lived in the area. It was both black and white at the time, and it was one of the best neighborhoods you would want to grow up in. I went to Pasteur Elementary School, Hampton Jr. High, and Cass Tech High School. I wanted to go to Mumford High School, but my Mother told my Father I had been accepted in Cass Tech, and my Father said that's where he is going. I had no say in the matter. This is at the tail end of the times when your parents made decisions for you and you stayed quiet.
Sis Detroit; your posting made me laugh!! Thanks!

I grew up on Clements St. between 12th St and Woodwrow Wilson. Woodrow Wilson was thriving. Shops, theaters, Drug store, markets, night clubs. There was a popular Schwinn Bike shop and the Oakman Theater in the area. Friday night you could get a "Hot Tamalee" from the Tamalee Man who would converted an adult's tricycle and mounted a white conatainer on it to store the tamalees. During the 50's there were a lot of gypsies in the area. They were just arriving to the states and many settled in the area. (This was all before the John C Lodge freeway was built).
We would buy fish from the "Fishman". He would walk down the street...during the hot summer days,, with a load of fish hanging from his shoulder. He would call out "fishman...fishman here". Can't believe we never got sick or anything.
Anyone else grow up in that area?

David,it,s a short drive, mostly on the expressway, maybe 40 minutes. If you have a map of Michigan, follow route 94 up towards the top of lake St.Clair, you'll see a town called New Baltimore,it's a wee bit north west of that city.
I,m going to be out of town for three weeks the last of April thru may19. I should be back in town just about the time you land in Detroit.
You no doubt will be very thirsty after that long dusty trip on the trail.Perhaps we can sample some of our great micro-brewed beers in my local saloon, which just happens to be across the street from a great blues club.
God Bless Scotland, Lynn

Hi all,
I was moved from Philly to Detroit in 1978. We lived in Cass Corridor for a time on a street off of Woodward called Park Ave. But it definitely wasnt like Park Ave in NYC!! ()
Later, we moved to the Harper /Gratiot area and lived on Norcross. Stayed there until 1983 and on Jan 20, (my Birthday!!) lit out of there on Greyhound and have only recently come back to visit in 2002!!
In my case, Philly was always home. I graduated from Southeastern HSand still contact some friends from time to time. But overall, my Detroit experiences werent very happy. It is not the fault of any of the nice people that I have met in Detroit or Detroit at all. But Philly is home for me!!

I do miss Northland and Eastland Mall though!!

David, you might be to busy, but the homebrew club I belong to will be meeting at Bailys possibly when your here. These guys can brew beer!! It meets at Bailys and everyone shares their latest batch,no sissy watered down beers for this crowd! They win a lot of first places at the Michigan State Fair.

Hi Lynn
This is probably a good time to make apologies in advance!
Last visit we were treated so royally by Millie and George Katzakis when we arrived in Detroit.
Trouble was/is we had a HUGE schedule to get through. I mean, I could spend years in Detroit and still find things to research.
A week is never enough but unfortunately it's all I can manage.
I'm looking forward to meeting you Lynn and having that beer AND hearing the stories of one who was there.

Lynn,
I hit Baileys quite a bit. Sometimes for lunch or after 5pm. I've been to George and Harrys' a few times, but not when the acts are playing. I also hit the Double Olive occasionally. I can enjoy a cigar at Bailey's or the Olive so I usaully hit one of those first. Great neighborhood. I grow up in the South End and still have family residing in Dearborn. I usually cruise out that way on my motorcycle for middle eastern food and then hang out. Looks like we'll have to hook up. I know a few of your old day buddies very well.
By Lynn Bruce (65.60.202.214) on Wednesday, March 05, 2003 - 10:00 am: |
David,I understand completly,I have the same problem when I visit my family in Florida, you can only visit so many people before you end up not acomplishing anything. A beer or two here and them we can talk more when we visit in Scotland. No date for that trip yet,but it's in the near future.
Horse, we'll have to get together,I think my wife and myself pay for an extra employee at the middle-eastern resturant (La Pita)near my house because of the many carry-outs we get every week.
With St.Patricks day coming up,I think Bailys will make enough to close down for a week. The place is jammed on a normal friday,so St.Pats. day will be even worse.I do like that place though for the fine selection of beers, plus the foods not bad either.
Hows Nabeh doing?

Nabeyh's doing great thanks. I haven't talked to him in a few weeks. I'll have to drop a dime on him. He's out in sunny L.A. while we're digging out. I've been trying to catch up with Ali Bushamie but can't get a number. I wonder if Ali's hip to the whole SITSOM thing. La Pita is fantastic. Your right about Baileys for St. Pat. it will be pumpin'. I forgot to mention another one of my Dearborn digs is the friday night pasta bar at the Dearborn Inn. We'll have to talk about hooking up in the near future after the thaw.

I grew up in a few neighborhoods. Rivard and Willis. LaSalle and Hanover. 12th and Blaine (during the riot). Washburn and Kendall. Graduated from Mackenzie with James Jamerson Jr.
I spent a lot of time in Black Bottom at my grandfathers. Especially in the summer.
We ate fish, fruit and vegetables off horse drawn wagons, from old men calling ... "Fish..Fresh Fish and Veg-a-tables" at 6:am.
My grandfather worked at Chrysler's Mound Road facility. We'd pick him up from work at 11pm; get a 5-gallon drum of ice cream from The Big Dipper and sit up and watch old westerns and play fart games.
Talk about grandbaby heaven?????

I remember my uncle speaking of Ben Turpin-his partner was "Whitey Ford" and they were tough cops in that era. Detroit police continued this enforcement in the 50's & 60's with the patrol tactics of the "Big Four & STRESS". Notwithstanding, it was a great place to grow up with the Motownrevue at the Fox theater and Ike & Tina at Phelp's lounge, etc. Ernie Durham was a friend of our family-nice guy. Still wish I had my 66 Shelby Mustang GT-350H that cost me $2200.00. Anyway, great website and hope to make the event in May.

My father owned a small market in Black Bottom during the 50s-early 60s. I remember hanging out in the front of the store and the cops were always stopping in. They were probably picking up there payoff or something. A few detective type characters and 1 motorcycle cop always came around. The biker cop always let me sit on his Harley. That must be where I got the fever for Motorcycles. My father was extremely ex-military and was pretty hardcore so there wasn't a whole lot of trouble IN the store. A lot of drunks and hookers came in. I just sort of took it all in. We used to go to the Fox, Adams and Palms Thee-A-TER all the time. Anybody from Detroit knows that's how you really pronounce the word theater when refering to the FOX. does that bring back any memories for anyone out there.

There was a guy that used 2 play sax and sometimes keyboards at Motown during the jam sessions, SUPREMES era, he once told me that he was the one who first initiated the song "Stubborn Kind Of Fella", due to the fact that he had a crush on Diana Ross. He never became famous, but he had a heck of a book with all kinds of Motown Artists photos and signatures. He did tell me he used to tell her "I'm a stubborn Kinda Fella, and my mind is made up to love you" his name was John Phillips.

Ok, does anyone know anything about a Local Detroit Guy named Michael Jamerson? I believe his first record was "I Feel So Much Together When You're Around" Where is he and what is he doing? The last time I heard from him, he sang at the Funeral of the slain soldier (Riggs), he sang Precious Lord and it was a standing ovation.
