George Clinton with the P Funk Allstars. On the Aqua Boogie tour (70s) they showed up on stage wearing scuba equipment - snorkels, masks, fins, air tanks, etc. On the Mothership tour they arrived onstage via a UFO and emerged from its belly wearing some pretty weird space suits. Except for the bass player who only wore a diaper..

Mel,
Maybe you should share your record collection with Conman so he gets a true understanding of what classic R&B pertains to...!

Guitarist Gary Shider was/is usually the fella in the diaper. He would also sing "Cosmic Slop", with which they liked to kick off their shows during the Mothership Connection tour. The bass player was probably Cordell Mosson, but I can't remember if he went the diaper route or not.

Ken

Hello everyone,
I'd have to add Aretha to this list. She's known to wear some bizarre outfits, not mention she likes to show off her most prize assests! :o)
Peace!

Common,
you beat me to it. I was just getting ready to mention Aretha. She's certainly calmed down in the past decade or so. But some of those outfits from the 70s and 80s are still being talked about.
By Livonia Ken (136.1.1.33) on Thursday, February 20, 2003 - 05:08 pm: |
Reese,
Aretha was pretty flamboyantly arrayed at that VH1 Divas deal not all that long ago, so she may not have calmed down as much as you think, fashionably speaking.

Ken

Hey, during the mid-1970s....
The BAR-KAYS.
Now wouldn't they, and "of their" (less than modest) stage 'outfits', fit in the catergory as dressing up, pretty 'wild'?
Anybody remembers seeing them perform (naturally, with those great BIG 'afros) in the film, "WATTSTAX"?

A few years ago Radio 2 played a recording of the Duets concert Aretha gave and it sounded brilliant. A few weeks later they showed a film of the concert I could not take in what she sounded like as I could not past watching her outfits!

Did you take a gander at the get up Aretha had on at the Grammy's last night. She looked like she stole someones bad looking prom gown. The collar was a remnant from the Victorian era.

p.s. I still love her! She is the Queen of Soul, but not of fashion
