I admit that it looks silly in print, but that's what I call soft, introspective music that I usually want to hear on Sunday mornings or whenever I wish to hear music, but not very amplified: hold the rumbling bass, flashy brass, rock and roll guitars, and shouting/screaming vocals. Not particularly romantic music, just mellow...

What do YOU call this type of music and what fits the bill for you?

I might get Smokey & the Miracles "Ultimate Collection" and program out "Going To A Go Go", "Mickey's Monkey", etc. and just enjoy the soft ones like "Ooh Baby Baby", "More Love", "The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage", "I'll Try Something New", "Baby Baby Don't Cry", etc.

One of my favorite foreign films is "Cinema Paradiso" and I love the Ennio Morrocone score. I play that soundtrack to "peace out".

Another favorite is "Feel Like Going Home: The Essential Charlie Rich". Disc two is all low key soul with jazzy underpinnngs like Ivy Jo Hunter's "I Almost Lost My Mind" and "Life's Little Ups And Downs". This music has such a calming influence while re-connecting me with my southern roots.

Probably my most dependable stand-by in the peace out category is anything by Nick Drake. This English folk singer died very young in the early 70's but his music hasn't aged a day. Volkswagon used a bit of his song "Pink Moon" just a couple of years ago in a commercial to lure young people who weren't even born when he died! I hear little, if any, r&b in Nick's vocals but, in an English way, he is nevertheless one the most soulful singers I've loved for 25 years now.

For me on early sunday morning, classical music does it. All I need is a little champagne and orange juice and I'm transported to a classy little resturant in San Diegos Balboa Park for their sunday brunch. Vivaldi is my favorite. Any other type of music playing and I start to get into the music more than the paper and start reading the same paragraph more than once.

I've been zoning out all day with the CD player on. Listening to a couple of Fats Domino discs that I picked up yesterday (2 discs from the "They Call Me the Fat Man" anthology), the remastered "Aerial Pandemonium Ballet" by Nilsson, and some classical and relaxation stuff (i.e, ocean sounds with music).

There are countless other CDs that I listen to when I'm relaxing.

Best,

Mark

Any Sunday, I have to play my cry music...

Soul Stirrers - "One More River To Cross," "Jesus Wash Away My Troubles," and "Stand By Me Father"
Shirley Caesar - "Faded Rose"
Tramaine Hawkins - "Goin' Up Yonder"
"God Cares" (Forget the singer)
The triple dose of "How I Got Over" - Clara, Mahalia, and 'Retha.
James Cleveland - "I Will Do His Will" and "God Has Smiled On Me"
Inez Andrews - "Just For Me."

Now, when I'm just trying to Mellow out on a boring Saturday nite, time to pull out Disk 3 from the 35th Anniversary Miracles Collection, the Carpenters "Love Songs" CD, "Flamingos Serenade," or Miles Davis Quintet's "Round About Midnight." The world is my own perfect fairy tale listening to those records/cds.

You mentioned two of my favorite Gordon Lightfoot songs - "Softly" and "Early Morning Rain."
Gord's United Artists albums contain some of his finest work (I own three studio albums & a live concert LP from that period).

KevGo, I was hooked on Lightfoot the moment I heard "Summer Side of Life" and I have just about all of his albums. It's his song writing ability that got me hooked.

Agreed. Gordon is a wonderful storyteller & his writing is a reflection of that. I first got into Lightfoot when I heard his "Don Quixote" album (which I bought while in high school). His ballad "Beautiful" is one of the best love songs I've ever heard - poignant without the mush. I also enjoy his version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" from the "Lightfoot" album. His concert album released through UA is my favorite Lightfoot album - captures him in his element, in front of a live audience.

KEVGO & DICK: WHO ELSE WOULD WRITE A SONG ABOUT AN INNOCUOUS SHIPWRECK IN THE NORTHERN GREAT LAKES AND MAKE A HIT OUT OF IT!!!...THE SONG DID INTEREST ME ENOUGH TO SIT AND WATCH A TWO HOUR DOCUMENTARY OF THE EVENT ITSELF...AND THE SONG DID SUMMARIZE IN THREE AND A HALF MINUTES VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING THAT WENT ON DURING THE ENTIRE ORDEAL=GREAT SONGWRITING!!!...I SAW HIM AT THE "GREEK" MANY YEARS AGO...AND IT AMAZED ME JUST HOW MANY FAMILIAR SONGS HE HAD WRITTEN!!!...STU

Thanks for the response. Wes' A&M/CTI work contained some fine playing and arrangements even thought "pundits" in the jazz community thought that Wes had sold out (which was so ridiculous considering that Wes had almost a half-dozen kids & wife to support).
