FAYETTE: I'D HAVE TO RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE WITH YOU REGARDING CHAKA'S SOUND THESE DAYS!!!...I THOUGHT THAT SHE PERFORMED WONDERFULLY ON THE "SITSOM" PROJECT...AND A GRAMMY NOMINATION TO BOOT!!!...STU

It's not so much that they're "the worst", but I just have a hard time telling the current crop of female singers apart. They all seem to sound so much like Britany clones that I wonder if there's a factory somewhere turning these things out. They're not bad per se, they just don't have any charcter.

THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU,BUT WHEN YOU TRY TO POINT THIS OUT TO YOUR 12YR OLD SHE LOOKS AT YOU LIKE YOU'RE CRAZY OR MAYBE WE'RE JUST NOT WITH IT WHATEVER IT IS.IT'S NOT THAT I'M ANTI-YOUTH IT'S THAT SAMENESS THAT DRIVES ME NUTS,WITH MOST OF TODAYS MUSIC YOU CAN TRULY SAY{IF YOU HEARD ONE YOU'VE HEARD EM ALL}.

stubass i'll have to repectfully disagree.
i recently purchased a live dvd by ms chaka
she was good just not as good as the seventies
in fact a lil boring. but what has surprised
me is how well she is handling jazz. i love
all kinds of music i love r&b,some rap(if not
too vulgar)raggae,country and western,jazz
and opera.chaka's voice really sounds good
doing jazz. i hope she does more of it

One of the best female Soul singers must be
Linda Jones, what a talent the Soul world lost
there. I don't think she made a poor record.

IF I MAY SAY SOMETHING HERE,CHAKA HAS BEEN SINGING JAZZ FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS,AND YES SHE IS GREAT.

Among the best...I'd have to go with Dianne Reeves and Lisa Gay, an artist you probably have not heard of yet...but hoping you will in the very near future. WRT Mary J. Blige....I know she's not among the elite and may never be. But...I have heard her continuing improvement over the years and hope that she will keep putting in the time and effort to refine her craft. To me, she's gone from "I hate her voice and enunciation" to "Aaaagh...she's tolerable" to "Hey..she's trying !" At least Ms. Blige has, unlike another vocalist discussed her recently, left those people who would be of detriment to her life and career behind.

ian i may also add that yes linda jones is
one of the finest vocalist i've ever heard
her style has never been imitated,as well
as billy stewart.i often wonder how great she
would have been had she still been with us

I saw Choice Four at the International Ampitheater in Chicago in 1975 and they were awful.

I'll need to gestate on worst for awhile, but when it comes to overated; someone whose screetchy caterwauling sounds like a junkyard cat and never fails to cause a wince, it's gotta be Janis Joplin. Rock and roll Hall of Fame (the pantheon, not the institution)? Not IMHO.

John Dixon,
I tend to agree with you pal. Of course I never quite got Hendrix or Dylan either.

TO the poster who posted this you are DEAD ON Linda Jones is the best and I cant argue with that. When it comes to the worst IMO I would NOT say Mary J Blige I think she is fine she has really matured. I would have to say Beyonce Knowles. Im sorry but these same old shrills and trills buy these girls dont excite me I think the only one that is impressive in the last couple of years is Jill Scott and Erika Badu and one a small scale more so for her musicianship and not her voice is Alicia Keys..

HEY 1WICKED: FORGET THE DICE CUP...I RETRIEVED THE DICE...AND THE CUP REMAINED IN TACT!!!...IT'S THE SPEAKER THAT GOT TWEAKED!!!...BUT THERE WAS A GRACE JONES SONG IN ABOUT "79" THAT FOR SOME REASON SET ME OFF!!!...I SWEAR...AND AT LEAST A COUPLE OF FRIENDS THAT HAD PLAYED FOR THE "DETROIT PISTONS" AT AROUND THAT TIME WERE AT MY APARTMENT, WHEN THAT PARTICULAR TUNE CAME ON...I WALKED UP AND KICKED THE SPEAKER OVER!!!...MY "BUDS" THOUGHT THAT IT WAS PRETTY FUNNY...BUT PERHAPS A LITTLE "CRAZY" AS WELL...TRUE STORY, AND I'M STICKIN TO IT!!!...STU

I would have to say that the worst female singer today would have to be Ashanti, and just to show you the current state of the industry, she got nominated for five grammies!!!!
I have lost all respect for the governing systems by which these award shows are run.

The best female singers to me were Lorraine Ellison and Linda Jones in the sixties, and today they would have to be Whitney BC(before crack)
Yolanda Adams(who sends shivers down my spine) and always Gladys.

don't you guys think that erykah badu sounds
like a modern day billie holliday.i know we not
suppose to pick but two for best and worst.
but i have to say i'm totally impressed by
india arie. she is not the glamous type, but
she is the most talented i think.i don't
how for the life of me how destiny child became famous in person they sound just awful.
they whine like alley cats. but back to india
i got a feeling she going to be somewhat like
roberta flack.her talent speaks entirely for her.

If I might make a generalistaion here... There seems to be a misunderstanding among certain vocalists as regards what Jazz musicians refer to as "blue notes". In the right place by a talented musician - yes. In the wrong, BY the lesser-skilled -oh, God... no! It seems that certain singers are of the (misguided) impression that singing flat and out-of-tune somehow lends a "jazzy" feel to their performance. Will the jury now consider an example? Exhibit A: Robert Palmer.

Ok, U asked 4 it, U got it
BEST - Aretha, Patti, Chaka, Oleta, Dinah, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Whitney, Stephanie, Anita,Yolanda, Jill, Eryka, Dorothy (misty blue), Candy, Shirley (just 2 name a few) ha ha
remember, u can tell a good vocalist, by their back-up, if they need a lot of music/sounds behind them, they sond terribe singing "LIVE"

WORST - Janis Joplin, Cindy Lauper, Macy Gray, Mariah, and all the little Brandy sounduing females, sound like they have a neurological problem n their voices. Most of todays female singers, should be models instead and keep their day jobs.
