On this month of February, in music history, the best selling
soundtrack, " Saturday Night Fever", was the No 1
LP on both the R&B and Pop charts. I know Bobby
Eli was very proud that two of his songs, "Disco
Inferno" and " K-Gee" (which was taken from their
1975 masterpiece LP, "Universal Love"), was featured on the soundtrack as well. Do any of
you SDer's remember purchasing this LP and if
so, did you enjoy it or was it an radio overkill?

Peace,

70s Nostalgia just doesn't do it for me - feels too recent! ;o)

Mike:
Do I remember? I stil have the copy I got when it first came out with the grooves all shot to hell! (Of course I've since replaced it with a mint copy).

I must admit I enjoyed the entire two-record set from beginning to end. It was one of disco's best recordings and the Bee Gees were high on the mountaintop. Seeing Tavares perform "More Than A Woman" on American Bandstand was a treat as well as dancing to the full-length version of "Disco Inferno". When I was a college radio DJ, I used MFSB's version of "K-Jee" as my theme song (interchanged with the original by the Nite-Liters, which was played in the verrrrrry early days of disco when it was "underground").

As far as radio overkill, it wasn't overkill to me because I loved the music. What may have been overkill was the dozens of bad disco records that followed in its wake (Ethel Merman Disco Album, anyone?).

Bottom line - SNF reflected a moment in time when almost everybody wanted to dance and have a good time, which many of us did.

Someone should release a compilation of the worst disco records of all time ala the Ethel one!

My fave SNF song is How Deep is Your Love.

I just listened to the side of the album with "Salsation", "K-Jee", and "Disco Inferno" while cleaning my basement yesterday evening. My favorite tracks on the album are "K-Jee" and "Open Sesame", and I'm not just picking K-Jee because Bobby Eli posted in this thread, so stop callin' me a suck-up. :)

I think I saw the movie on TV at least once years ago with "K-Jee" replaced by some generic disco tune. That bummed me out, but they included it back on the DVD, so the world is right again.

Regards,
Ken

The strange thing about the first pressing of
the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack is that
it features a live version of the Bee Gees hit
"Jive Talkin'". On reissued CD, it has the
original hit. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........go figure!

I remember watching the Oscars, as SNF won for best soundtrack. All of the producers showed up to receive their statues. Freddie Perren, Bobby Martin, The Bee Gees, David Shire, etc.

DVDMike!
How's it going, amigo! I remember that Oscar broadcast, too. I bet Hollywood never saw the likes of this before - a large group of talent transcending all races getting an Oscar for one album! I remember cheering when I heard the Brothers Gibb announced in the same breath as Robert "Kool" Bell & Harry Wayne Casey (KC)!

Hey Chancellor!
Funny you should mention the "Jive Talkin'" live version on the LP & not the CD. ICE Magazine quizzed the gang at UMG/PolyGram about that & they said that the master they used for the CD was the same one from the LP - which of course is a lie. When ICE played both for the LP & CD to prove their point, the label did concede & admit they replaced the live tune with the studio version.

If Harry Weinger oversaw this reissue, it would've been done right from the git-go.

I really like that Saturday Night Fever album its really a classic and to this day most of us remember and he is imitated (John Travolta) in that white disco danny suit!!! His image on the cover makes him a 70s icon!!! I know he is glad he got past the Vinnie Barbarino stage although it made him a star.

I really love Night Fever that is my favorite song on that album..the Bee Gees stuff was infectous and to this day no other dance album is as good as that one. Im sure that album alone had them set for life when it comes to money if they had never done anything else. Radio Overkill? On this one it didnt matter everybody loved this music.

I still love that soundtrack, because it was a "pure" album that touched the pulse of the dance vibe at the time and even today...timeless..

My favorite tracks are Disco Inferno by The Trammps, Open Sesame by Kool and The Gang, Calypso Breakdown by Ralph McDonald, More Than A Woman (both versions)..
