Wow, you mean to tell me that I missed it!!
I had much fun doing that interview. You should hear the full unedited version!!

Today March 6th, I had the pleasurable opportunity of being interviewed for Modern Drummer magazine along with Charles Collins and Joe Tarsia.. The interviewer was Jim Payne who wrote the great book "Give the drummers some" .
The book intro was written by our own Harry W.
It is a must read and Jim said that he will do a second book with Earl, Charles and the Motown guys.
Unfortunately, Earl could not make the interview due to prior commitments but he wil be doing a phone interview.
We had a great deal to talk about and it was great to reminisce about the 'goold old days"
B.P.T.... before pro tools!!!!

Eli
Im ashamed to say this but before this forum I had never heard of you and I would like to know what your greatest accomplishments are in music.
I KNOW you are a legend so I bow down to you along with the other greats in this forum but I apologize for being ignorant on the subject of you as a musician..
Stephanie
thanks for understanding

Hey Stephanie, Bobby Eli is not only a great studio muscian but a great writer & producer as well.He is one of the architects of the Philly Sound. His songwriting credits include the multi-million selling "Love Won't Let Me Wait" by Major Harris & "Sideshow" by Blue Magic.

Eli,

Do you know which edition of Modern Drummer the interview will be in? Did they also conduct a photo session? Looking forward to reading it.

Your question is cool...That's what we're all here for - to learn and share what we know & love about music.
Check this out from the All Music Guide website:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=2:50:12|PM&sql=R73699#APPEAR

Bobby also has over 200 songs registered through BMI - not counting the ones that he's working on or haven't been released!

...plus, he seems to be well connected with Paulie Three Shoes, although federal prosecutors could not prove that in front of a Grand Jury. :)

Rumor has it that P3S gave Bobby his first guitar after it, uh..., fell off of a truck.

Ken

I know this is Bobby Eli's thread, but I'm really curious about Dee Dee Sharp. I have quite a bit of her music and have seen her a couple of times on various re-union shows. It's too bad, Cameo-Parkway didn't move beyond Dance Records until it was too late.

One of my favorite songs that Bobby Eli co-wrote was "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely" as performed by The Main Ingredient.

Fayette,
I guess that I am the original Luuuuvv man, huh???
It amazes me that I have had all of those hits that are associated with "gettin' busy" in the classic sense.
I guess that I should "take the fifth" right about now.

And as an addendum, this forum has its very own lovebirds with Vonnie and I!!!

d.. Dee De is a very underrated singer and has for the most part been given corny material with the exception of several PIR things and even they were not up to her standards.
A Gospel cd would be in order right now.

Eli: On "You Made A Promise To Me" (from Pick Of The Litter) there is a very unique arrangment: at the end of the 2nd verse Bobby sings "Dig It".....then at the end of verse 4 that is replaced by (I think) 2 notes on vibes which make the song "melodically correct". Was that the original arrangement or was that some of the "magic" that just happened between Thom Bell and MFSB ??
BTW....What was the inspiration for "Sweet Love of Mine" ??? (Great Song !!)

Top of pageBottom of page   By Beebopman (67.37.77.195) on Friday, March 07, 2003 - 09:40 pm:

Dee Dee Sharp. Man what a voice. My favorite by her ...on a Philly Sound Alblum with other artists is ..."Oh Child", Origianally song by the Five Stairsteps. Man what an arrangement and sound. If you have an opportunity to get a copy. It's fantastic! One of my all time favorite songs and song with so much feeling and bravo.

Twicked...
Knowing Thom as well as I do, that part was intentional and made to sound otherwise.

Sweet Love of Mine was a song that always held a special place in my heart as well as Vinnie Barrett's my co-writer.
We thought that it was going to be a single and if it were I believe that it would have been a hit, but the powers as they were did not act on it.
I recorded it on a British singer named Martyn Nash in England in '92 but was never released. It was a very soulful version by a great "blue eyed soul " brother. He works in and around London with his band Shoot the Moon. Check them out if you can, all you Londoners!!!
Johnny Mathis' version was too fast and did not have the "magic" although any cover of one our songs was highly appreciated and still is.
There is a 'smoth jazz" cover of Sideshow by Walter Beasley that is in heavy rotation on wjjz in Philly. I'll make a special concession for that one!!!

Dee Dee Sharp is one of my closest and dearest
friends and, of course, one of my all-time
favorite singers. She looks and sounds great
and you can check out her own website. Her 3
LPs at Phil. Int. Records is by far her best
recorded work, but I also like the stuff she
did on Atco as well. Most people know she was
married to Kenny Gamble for about 13 years.
There's a lot of talk about a Cameo-Parkway
box set (of the labels, not a Sharp solo), but
so far, nothing's surfaced.

We've been promised a Cameo-Parkway box set for the last 10 years. I guess it's up to Allan Klein to "get up off da" tapes.

Thanks for all of the information on the great Mr Eli!!! I loved his music and didnt even know it was him!!! Couldnt Allan Klein make some money on this stuff? I have read for years that he would release it but its been a no go...whatever happened to Christine Cooper who did Heartaches Away My Boy and SOS heart in distress.

Hi Steph,
Just another day at the office, so to speak.
Thanks for the wonderful accolades but I was only doing my job and I am still doing it!!!

As far as C.P. and Allen Klein are concerned,
I was talking to several people "in the know" and
it will not happen any time soon as he could care less about the C.P. stuff.

Don't know anything about Christine Cooper.
I did not do much on the C.P. side.
Although they did have some fine r&b records their mindset and m.o. was lily white and mine was not.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Monday, March 10, 2003 - 08:34 pm:

Hey Bobby:
A few weeks ago, Jody Klein (Allen's son) was interviewed in either Goldmine or Discoveries magazine regarding the Cameo-Parkway material. He said that they are planning on releasing a boxed set sometime within the year. I double-checked with ABKCO's remastering facility Master Cutting Room (who also create the vinyl masters for the label I work for). Their engineers confirmed that ABKCO had sent the C-P masters there to be remastered and restored but the tapes really needed work. I just sent www.abkco.com an email regarding C-P and I will let you and our fellow Forum posters know when they respond.

KevGo- Thanks for the info about Cameo-Parkway. I hope that the box set is for real this time. Maybe they will get around to ? & the Mysterians also.

I bet ABKCO is making a killing on the recent Rolling Stones re-issues at $19.00 a disc.

Steve:
I hope the C-P box happens, too - my 45s are too beat-up to play anymore!

As for ABKCO reissuing the Rolling Stones at damn near $20 a pop - thank God I kept all my London LPs (and in decent shape, too!).

Kevin-
Is there a possibility that any of the Cameo-Parkway has been leased to TIME-LIFE or any other compilations? Why ask...Well I heard a stereo version of The Dovells "You Can't Sit Down" on the radio about a year ago and it blew me away! I thought it had to be re-mastered. Maybe it was taken just a virgin record or an old reel to reel tape. Any thoughts?

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 05:29 pm:

Steve:
RE: The Dovells "You Can't Sit Down". WCBS-FM here in NYC plays the stereo version as well and it is a mind-blower. I checked the Both Sides Now website for any stereo vinyl information and found only indications of a rechanneled stereo version.

I know that radio stations are serviced with music that is compiled by different companies that specialize in collections per radio format. Could it possible that a stereo version may have circulated through these companies? Who knows.

I may email someone at WCBS-FM to find out what the deal is.

Hope this helps.
