I was groovin over an LP over the weekend by
Jackie Jackson entitled of course, " Jackie
Jackson". Motown to me, made a big mistake in
not promoting this smoker LP, although I'm quite
sure they had their reasons. I remembered when
this album was released and from time to time,
I did hear the single, "Love Don't Wanna
Leave", on a few of the soul stations here in
NY. Have any of you SDer's heard this fabulous
LP and if you have, what's your opinion of it ??

Peace,

Geez, Mike! What a blast from the past! I remember borrowing the album from the public library when I was a kid and renewing it every two weeks for the following two months!

Jackie's album was indeed a treat - I remember the cover (double exposure of Jackie's headshot) and the songs were wonderful (especially his cover of "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)"). A couple of tracks did make it onto the (now-deleted) Jackson 5 boxed set "Soultation!" but you're right about the non-existence of a reissue ("...paging Harry Weinger!.."). I'll bet the ol' library back home still has the record...hmmm...

Please Kev, let's get a serious vote on
re-releasing that LP, plus most of Jermaine
Jackson solo albums, especially his first one
where he's lying on the beach, lol.
Let's take a pole here on SD !!!

KevGo and Mike:

A great thread and I agree with you guys that this was a wonderful album! Motown should definitely re-issue this album. There was talent in the family besides Michael. I have always been in love with the Jermaine Jakcson album where he does the incredible duet with Whitney Houston "If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful" (can't remember the title of the album, I believe it was Jermaine). I have always felt sorry for these two Jackson brothers because they should have had bigger solo careers. Of course, Jermaine did have a hit with Let's Get Serious, but he could have been so much bigger.

The Jermaine Jackson album I believe was on Arista Records.

Michael:
The album that contains "If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful" was released on Arista in 1986. The album was called "Precious Memories" (which also contained the hit single "I Think It's Love").

Mike:
I hear your point about reissuing these recordings. Bear in mind that Harry & the UMG gang have so much on their plate and the bean counters are not gonna have them reissue any CD that won't sell at least 10,000 to 50,000 copies a title. I think Dana Smart at Hip-O compiled a decent Jermaine Jackson Ultimate Collection.

Hey Michael,
The Jermaine Jackson LP I'm refering to was
the first one released on the Motown label
entitled, " Jermaine".

Take care,

I've had Jackie Jackson's Motown album for years and I guess beauty is in the eye (or ears)of the beholder. No further comment other then "Love Don't Want To Leave" and "In My Dreams" are the only two tracks on it I can stomach. If I remember correctly I paid 75 cent for it when it was two years old at a resale record shop.

Just for the record . . .

My plan was to break off the boys one at a time starting with Michael. We just did Jermaine, and then I took on Jackie, Tito was going to be next with a guitar LP, then Marlon was last. (I was waiting for his chops to get better. I used him on 'Corner Of The Sky', but only a couple of lines.) I liked Jackies LP, except it REALLY needs to be re-mixed. I have a cassette and it sounds bad. It just doesn't sparkle. I cut it, but don't recall mixing it. However, if I indeed did mix it, shame on me.

Maybe it's the mix, Deke. Jackie's voice sounds awfully thin and whiney coming from a big dude and I've never been a fan of Christine Yarian's syrupy lyrics. I still have the album it's not like I use it as a frisbee and I do like a couple of the songs.

RD,
Well, you hit on a good point. That was why I signed Freddie and Fonce but not Chris. She just wasn't ready yet. Freddie fought for her so hard, I finally had to give in. It's not that I didn't like her. She just needed to be developed more and I didn't have the time to work with her. I was so busy with the J5.

A couple of all but forgotten mid-70's albums by Jermaine are: My Name is Jermaine & Feel the Fire, both of which feature decent material as well as some pretty great playing, particularly when the backbeat remains upbeat. Tremendous album covers to boot. I've often felt that these album (My Name ... in particular) went under-appreciated. The albums feature several different producers and different styles. Matter of fact, one track (Bass Odessey) sounds more like an Andre Lewis cut off of one of his Mandre projects. Of course everybody & their brother needed some outer-space music after the Undisputed Truth's Cosmic Truth album, followed by P-Funk's taking the concept platinum.

Peace

Hey Deke,
Maybe it's me or my musical ears, but enjoyed
Jackie's LP. My favorite cut on there is, "It's
So Easy". Maybe the quality of the mix is bad
to you guys, but I enjoyed the LP. Maybe it's
because time has passed and I appreciated it more
now...........then before. I'm hoping that
Harry Weinger will re-release it on CD as a
double with Jermaine first solo LP of 1972.

Peace,
Mike Boone
