I think the beginning of You ve Lost that Lovin Feeling is very slow and Angel Baby by Rosie and the Originals...she sings off key to me...LOL

Hey Girl I Like your style is not that slow but I have always thought of it as being slower than normal. This is by the Temptations.
The background on You Got Your Hooks in Me is awfully slow like there is a dragging bass back there..

"For Your Precious Love," completely broken down note for soulful note by Linda Jones, and her similarly soulfully deconstructed version of "Not On The Outside."

Steph, I hear you on Rosie. She was at Red White and Rock, and she was such a little diva! Very neat lady.

"Lazy River" by The Platters. Bass singer Herb Reed went down and nailed low A. Recording engineer Gerhard Lehner did not believe it could be done, but producer-arranger David Carroll knew different. The session was recorded in late September of 1957 at Barclay Studio in Paris and "Lazy River" was included on the Platters "Remember When" album.

Eli!

You wrote Sideshow?? I'm smiling man.
You *are* Mr. Philly....shit. Bad mofo.
Where's your book? Congrats with Vonnie.
Nothing like seeing 2 kids in love.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Eli (151.197.41.126) on Tuesday, February 04, 2003 - 11:04 pm:

Sideshow was written after seeing an advert in the Daily News about the circus which was in Philly at the time and it still was under the bigtop. In the ad the words "sideshow" and "see"
caught my eye and it immediately conjured up an image in my mind of a sideshow of lost love as opposed to the usual "freaks".
I pictured myself walking along the sideshow and looking at all of the characters in my little script.
I pictured the barker(Steve Bernstein of WMOT)standing outside ushering people in and charging them only fifty cents.
I was told by a certain person that I must be on LSD and no one will ever buy a song about a sideshow!! I think that they were proven wrong.
The song was written on the guitar and demoed on a cheap cassette by Vinnie Barrett and myself with me telling her "here is where the circus sounds should go"
Various groups rehearsed and demoed the song including Purple Reign, Formula Three from Bermuda, The Sons Of Robinstone and The Aristocrats.
Thom Bell passed on it for the Stylistics.
When Blue Magic was puting together the "Blue" album I showd it to Norman Harris and the rest is history!!!

Eli, if ONLY I had your memory! Are the demos of "Sideshow" by those other groups you mentioned still in existence? Yeah, that's a song that gets much airplay between my sis and myself. At the Rhythm Love and Soul show, I got to see Blue Magic perform it live for the first time and boy did they work magic on the tune! It's a fantastic lyric perfectly matched with a great melody line

Addendum: Speaking of "Love Won't Let Me Wait" I'm interested in knowing whether you (Mr. Eli) have heard Perfect Blend's (the Philly a capella group) a capella version of the song, and your feelings on it in terms of it being a good cover, etc.

Also, everyone, apologies for my last post, it is just kind of smacked together and completely incoherent, making for horrid reading.

Hi Nish,
How ya been doin?? how are the studies going?
Yes, I have heard Perfect Blend's version and in all honesty it is always a thrill to hear every interpretation of my songs.
Perfect Blend came as quite a surprise, especially with it being an a capella group.
I truly have been blessed to be a creator of songs that are still popular especially after all of the time that has passed.

"Sideshow" is just one beautifully crafted tune. I'm happy that the other groups passed on it...because I doubt that anyone else could have delivered quite like "The Wizard" and Blue Magic.(BTW...did MFSB members go on the road w/ some of the Philly acts ? I saw Blue Magic several times with full band (rhythm section + strings & horns) & they obviously weren't locally contracted.)

The Al Green thread made me think of this one: How about his smoldering take on "For the Good Times". I also heard a live version of him doing "Unchained Melody/God Blessed Our Love" that he milked for every cent that it was worth.

Mr. Eli, I really CAN'T complain! Studies are fine, just insane, and looking for summer jobs in this year's legal market is absolutely scary, but I have my mom, good soul music, good people here with whom to talk about the music, so I'm copescetic overall. As I type, I'm taking a break from my law library research marathon.

When I picked up PB's "Masterpiece" CD, I kind of raised my brow at the thought of an a capella version of "LWLMW"... now the song is one of my favorite renditions, too.

MHC - no one's more surprised than myself, seeing that I sometimes can't keep my fingers from typing those three words. :-) I've become like the official "Ooh Baby Baby" mentioner here. I thought about it though, I REALLY thought about it! :-)

Top of pageBottom of page   By Livonia Ken (136.1.1.101) on Thursday, February 06, 2003 - 10:17 am:

Speaking of babies, another one we have not mentioned yet Is Sam & Dave's "When Something is Wrong with My Baby". I always wondered if they recorded their vocals simultaneously on that one because of the close harmonies and measured pacing. It seems like it would be hard to stay so tightly in sync and in harmony on those choruses without them looking at each other.

Regards,
Ken
