FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOUL-A-RAMIC!
'DETROIT'S BADDEST' MAKES EAGERLY AWAITED RETURN TO NIGHTCLUB CIRCUIT

Nathaniel Mayer To Perform At Fifth Avenue Downtown March 8

After a long absence, one of Detroit's most legendary R&B icons is ready to make his return to the metro nightclub scene -- but, the question is: is Detroit ready for the dynamic, hyperkinetic, and always-electric Nathaniel Mayer? Ready or not, Mayer and his group -- the Fabulous Twilights -- are prepared to serve up a heapin' helpin' of scorchin' '60s-style soul at Fifth Avenue Downtown in the northwest corner of Comerica Park, 2100 Woodward Ave. (at East Montcalm) in Detroit on Saturday, March 8, beginning at 10 p.m.

Mayer -- nicknamed "Detroit's Baddest" -- is best known for his 1962 doo-wop/R&B smash, Village Of Love. Proclaiming "I'm goin' to tear it up," he promises to deliver energetic versions of his own classic songs plus other high-octane selections to round out the night.

Detroit has always held a reputation for musical creativity, and the city made history in the '50s and '60s by producing some of the world's greatest entertainers. Any list of super-talented acts from Detroit's golden musical era must include Nathaniel Mayer.

Mayer recorded for Detroit's storied Fortune label, and "Village Of Love" was Fortune's biggest hit ever, reaching #22 on the Billboard national pop charts and #16 on the same publication's R&B charts. The record made an even greater impact in major urban markets -- for example, "Village Of Love" hit #8 on the WABC New York survey and rocketed all the way up to #2 on the WLS Chicago survey.

Mayer's follow-up to "Village," Leave Me Alone," was a rocking workout that featured a pounding surf-guitar lead; today, it's an audience favorite. The rousing "I Had A Dream" just "bubbled under" the national Hot 100 in late 1963, but throngs of Detroit teenagers sang along while listening to WKNR and WJLB as the record made the local charts. Mayer then found himself on the cutting edge of the funk explosion with I Want Love And Affection (Not The House Of Correction)" in 1966. The song's memorable refrain, "I can't stay no more, in DeHoCo," was a reference to the infamous, now-extinct, Detroit House of Correction.

His newest song, released on the Norton label in 2002 as a 7-inch vinyl single, is the danceable shouter, I Don't Want No Bald Headed Woman Telling Me What To Do.

Mayer has seen his music influence many of today's up-and-coming garage-rock/punk/soul acts. "Village Of Love" was covered by the Detroit Cobras; "Leave Me Alone" was remade by the Austin, Texas-based Hard Feelings; and the Gibson Brothers cranked out a psychobilly version of "I Had A Dream." Moreover, Mayer's original 45s are some of the most sought-after by R&B fans and record collectors.

Mayer was born in Detroit in 1943 and grew up on the east side, attending Eastern High School. Early influences included Hank Ballard & the Midnighters and Marv Johnson, and Mayer later was intrigued by the innovative rhythms and energy of James Brown. He was signed to Fortune Records as a teenager, recording a ballad, "My Last Dance With You," as his first offering. After "Village Of Love" broke out, he appeared at venues all over the country, including New York City's famed Apollo Theatre.

The Fabulous Twilights, veteran Detroit R&B musicians, are led by Baby Pepper.

See you at the show it'll be soul-a-ramic!

Nate's club show at Fifth Avenue Comerica Park is this Saturday at Comerica Park ... I hear he's going to do some Hank Ballard and James Brown, as well as his own bad stuff ..."Village of Love" ...

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Tuesday, March 04, 2003 - 05:58 pm:

Boy I wrote that too fast -- too many "Comerica Parks" ...but you get the picture. Fifth Ave. Detroit has a beautiful stage; the club's so popular with younger people though who just go to hear DJs spin music -- but it's really set up for live music.

I usually don't like escorts when I go to see my favorite artists. I like being free to scream whenever I wish. But, if the show is starting at 10pm, I may have to open my little black book.

Geocities won't let you post a GIF or jpg by themselves. You have to creat a HTML document to "host" it. This allows them to insert their little adds.

One thing that is definitely wrong is the / mark.
It should be \

Typing in the "c" prompt isn't necessary either, but I don't know if that causes failure.

All images I upload are jpeg too.

Please mail me the image if you don't get anywhere.

Thanks
David

I will be attending Nathaniel's band rehearsal tonight. I have seen his song list and it's a great mixture of some of his own classic stuff and some other excellent material from the late '50s to late '60s.

On behalf of Nate, thanks for the nice words, Marc.

The publisher said they are finally putting a "rush" on it because it sold out faster than any of their other books had,& they didn't expect that. DUHHH1 Right? How dumb can some people be? Yes, you can get a refund. I'm surprised you even found one.
