Mike,
totally agree with you there,
Jimmy Delphs and his Almost track, say no more.
Do you know his record called
Dancing a Hole in the World on Carla (no.1904)
This is priced at around the 1,000 pounds mark.
But
''ooh, the saddest word that I ever heard is almost.
'cos it means what ever you tried to do,you did'nt make it,.
oh no,
but baby you almost,
honey you almost.
Now take a man whos saved and plans his whole life through the years,
only to find he ran out of time,
he didnt live to see his dreams come true,
oh baby but he almost,
he almost, he almost(etc,etc)
WOW,LYRICS LIKE THAT MAN,
100%PURE CLASS(andthensome).

...I know that this thread is dead, but I just (as in today) got the "Detroit-Northern Soul Years" CD (Goldmine) with Jimmy Delphs- "I've Been Fooled Before"; and having just played it seven times in a row; I thought I should spread a little love! Absolute perfect Northern soul; great rhythm, ace guitar, really good lyrics- and totally brilliant arrangment. (check those stabbing/surging strings)
Ollie McGlaughlin's name on production really does always guarantee something special; all the Deon Jackson stuff, Soul Twins- "Quick Change Artist" (one of my favourite old school Northern soul stompers), Betty Lavette's beautiful "You'll Wake Up Wiser" (I actually haven't heard the Deon Jackson original yet; what's it like??), that ace Barbara Lewis Enterprise LP......and yeah, Mel, "Dancing A Hole In The World" was my favourite cut on the second Millionaires CD. (with Dennis Edwards- "Johnny On The Spot" in close second place)
So can some soul collector tell me what the Verble Domino version of "I've Been Fooled Before" is like. Is it as good??
Well anyway if they are reading this thank you Jimmy, Ollie, and Verble/Sherm!!

P.S Any other Palace fans out there?? I'm still on such a high from last night!! Anyone here a Liverpool man?? Keep yourself away from sharp objects and open windows.

"I've Been Fooled Before" is a great record. I don't think it's an expensive 45 and you should be able to find one quite cheaply... buy one, you won't regret it. The flip side is "Almost."

Yan - You can see that Dale Warren arranged the Carla side - and the flip too.
Paul Riser was involved in the DSSI disc. I wonder who lives on Maxwell?

...how do I know Dale Warren's name?? Did he work at Shrine, or is that another Dale? Sorry- I'm sure it is much more obvious than that; my brain isn't working.
Well, whoever he is- Dale; those string arrangments on "I've Been Fooled Before" are still knocking me out. You done good.

The "G Mallory" in the writer credits is probably
Gerald Mallory who was later lead singer for a
Michael Stokes' produced group called Active
Force. Their "Give Me Your Love" on A&M is great
track.
