I was recently at a good friend, and knowledgable soulies house, spinning a few discs before we hit the local soul doo, when he pointed something out to me about The Supremes' "Dr.Goldfoot & The bikini machine" 7" that was on the deck..."That doesn't sound like Diana singing", he said.
Now, I hadn't really thought about it before, but yes the lead vocal doesn't sound like Ms.Ross...so the question is simple, is it or isn't her taking the lead?
Great track too, don't you think?!

Maybe it was Annette Funicello, moonlighting from another AIP movie ;o)

Well we went to see the movie when it was new& the Supremes were at a car show or race or something singing it and another song "Surfer Boy" I think was the title and yea it was Diana Mary & Florence. My brother Randy would know more about it cause he was always a Supremes freak since "Let Me Go the Right Way". Oh, the words to "Surfer Boy" were kinda comical to me-meant forAnnette or Lesley Gore it seemed like.

Sorry dudes, I was thinking of "Beach Ball" .Dr. Goldfoot they only did the theme song. My brother informed me he had met the guy who had something to do with "Goldfoot" and he had also recorded the song on Carolyn Willis, who was a Blue Jean and then became a Honey Cone. So mayby you guys were hearing her version.

I understand the ladies sing the theme under the end credits in the movie, but the solo lead really doesn't sound like Diana on the vinyl...I also have the version by The Beas which is also on a single sided AIP 7" promo.
Anyone know where the track was recorded (if not Detroit) as it's solid four beats to the bar Motown at it's very best!

According to information contained in the booklet that accompanied the Supremes 2000 Box Set, the recording date is unknown. The following information is given: Composers-Guy Hemrick & Jerry Styner / Musical Supervision- Al Simms /
Originally appeared in the film of the same name with dialogue and sound effects (1965)/ previously unreleased version. On this and on the bootleg version that I have heard, the lead is definitely Diana Ross & the background vocalists are clearly Florence Ballard & Mary Wilson.

I have the box set, I have original single-sided 7" promos of both The Supremes and The Beas version (with additional brass arrangement)...it just doesn't sound like it's Diana on lead!
With regards to dates, the Monarch matrix numbers reveal Oct 65 for The Supremes and Nov 65 for The Beas.

The Beas are supposedly an early version of the group that became the Honeycone. Edna Wright and
Carolyn Willis were apparently involved.

Haven't heard it myself so I can't say for sure
- all I can say that is that Edna doesn't sound
at all like Diana.

Edna Wright doesn't sound like Diana Ross but Carolyn Willis does.

Flynny,

The Beas version was on the LA based Chattahoochee
label ( home of the Murmaids, Bobby Paris, Thee
Midniters and loads more ).

Almost certainly recorded in LA where both the
label and AIP were based.

I must honestly admit that I never had any doubts about Diana Ross being the lead on "Dr. Goldfoot". To me it sounds very much like her.
