We have a situation. David may be leaving us. Personally, I don't see this web-site surviving without him here.

David. You are needed here. sorry to put you on the spot pal, but it needs to be said. I know you tend to be a lttle emotional at some of the things that take place here, but the reality is that is part of your charm. You are a passionate man David. I am making you an honorary Italian because of this. If you didn't care about all this I'm sure nothing would bother you here. But the fact remains, you care deeply. You have high moral standards David and if it were possible for all of us as a whole to abide by these standards, there never would be controversy here. However, this is the real world and we all have faults, so we sometimes fall short of what is hoped for in our behavior.

Never doubt for a moment though David that 99.9999 % of the members here are deeply appreciative and indebted to you for what you have created here. That is a fact. Think it over David.
Your friend and admirer,
Ralph Terrana

Ralph:
As I mentioned in the last thread, this website has been an education for me, a 36-year old African/Native-American who went into the music business for the same reason David created this website with Lowell and why we are all here - passion, love & knowledge for a music we all respect. While there are some who do carry this passion a bit far, we can't afford to be too sensitive to the point where we say 'I give up.'

As I offered, I'd be happy to help you, David, Lowell keep the peace the best way I can if that would help. I feel that if we all make the effort to respect each other we wouldn't have these misunderstandings.

Best regards always,
Kevin L. Goins - "KevGo"

(Ralph - Please email me at kevingoins@juno.com when you can. I would like to pick your brains for a moment).

Same goes for me. I'd hate to see this site close down; I just got here. I feel like going to a gig and the hotel says "no vacancies" even though the room was paid for - "go find someplace else to sleep". I like it here, plain and simple.

If there are any other ideas to keep this site up and running, count me in.

I posted a thread "SHARE YOUR ON STAGE OR STUDIO STORIES" but it died. How about a thread about some new ideas/topics. Count me in.

Ralph,

This is outrageous. It just shows how good and important this site is that ANYone, yet alone it's founder could get upset.

My gut senses a few folks are envious & jealous of what David has made. Where can you find the hippest folks who LIVED the soul 60's scene?
SOULFULDETROIT.COM

David's making a mistake if he walks. That's exactly what a couple of sickies want.

My advice to David: Don't give it to 'em!

You'd be letting down too many people who care about YOU.

(((((DAVID MIEKLE))))) - You probably will not read this, but I know exactly how you feel. There has been times when I wanted to exploid on this forum in response to what someone has written. But I didn't because this is your "Baby." And since it is your creation, you have the right to exploid whenever someone disrespect you, your friends, and your guidelines. If you throw in the blanket, they will win. I know life is too short and daily events are frustrating as it is, without having to baby sit with disrespecting adults.

Sometimes we read into messages what is not there. We sometimes misinterpret what is written and question it. Then again, sometimes the message is blatant. In either case, it is your right to stop it in it's tracks on this forum. No one else has the right to chastise you for doing that. This site is "Soulful", was invented as such, and should remain as intended, if for no other reason than out of respect for the founders of this great site.

For the most part, I have ignored racist and sexist remarks. I have even ignored sly character attacks. I did that only because of my respect for you, my family, myself, the fans, the posters, the Funk Brothers, and the love of the music.

It won't be the same without you, and I may just do as you've done, I may exploid, and tell everyone where to go. You would then have to come back and straighten me out. :o)

Was that the Drifters who recorded "Don't Go, Please Stay" If I got on my knees and I pleaded with you, not to go, but to stay on this forum. Would you walk out that door, like you did once before?

Love ya my friend, Sis

David,
hope you'll change your mind and keep that wonderful train running!
I still remember your warm welcome when I, a soul novice from germany, first stumbled in here!
I learned so much about things I didn't know before. Be it about the detroit music, be it the technical stuff, there's so much for me to read all over the forum. Even if I don't have much to share, it became a daily routine to check the new threads and learn more about the people that did the music and the people now talking about it!

So I deeply hope you kick those MFs ass and stay here and help my education :-)

Cheers Darin

You're making me laugh. There is a lot of feistiness in the Scots, maybe even more so than Italians, Ralph, I don't know.

It's easy to type in anger but harder to make peace. Don't let the extremely obvious anonymous miscreant get you down, David ...with an open forum they're free to come in and try to stir the pot.

Hi David,
I am a novice here (regarding the northern soul scene) compared to most, and I really don't know (or care to know) about the personal fights people are having here! IMHO if someone has an issue with someone else, that is what EMAIL is for!! I belong to about 6 message forums, and each one has a handful of idiots who try to ruin it for the others! There's no getting away from this! It's best to (try to) ignore the jerks, keeping in mind the source from where their comments are coming from! There are many knowledgable and kind folks here (you being on the top of the list for sure), so it should not be worth it to throw in the towel over a few loosers! I've learned alot from just reading many of the interesting, intelligent, and informative posts loaded with great information about the artists of the 60s. Anyway, that is just my two cents worth! :)

In harmony,

Hi David. I just got back from playing guitar at a soul concert and taping for PBS TV in Pittsburgh. I played with Dennis Edwards and the Temptations, The Spinners, Edwin Starr and the Originals, Barbara Mason, Freda Payne, Tavares, Blue Magic, Mary Wilson and the Supremes and Johnny Bristol. I also watched Aretha Franklin and her band perform along with Lou Rawls and Jerry Butler. Talk about keeping the music alive! It was soul royality at its finest! You and Lowell created this site because of the music. You are doing for the music on the web what TJ Lubinsky is doing for the music on PBS. It is a previlege and not a right to use this site. I would mention the guidelines again and anyone who cannot discuss the topics at hand without personal attacks gets banned from the site. You can have Ralph or Lowell filter out their email addresses. We should all remember that music is an emotional art form and people have a lot of passion about it. They are all entitled to their opinions within reason. I would remind everyone that the emotional response to music may be different for all of us. We all respond in different ways and like different things. There is the technical component, the creative component and the emotional response of the listener component to the music. It's no big deal so folks lighten up. One thing I do know, is when I saw the respect and love from the audience in their response to the music yesterday at the huge theatre in Pittsburgh, it was simply overwhelming! Again, lets realize why this site was created. It's about our music. David and Lowell please keep up the good work. And thanks to you Ralph for helping. If anyone feels things are getting too intense in these discussions, its ok to take a break from the site and come back later. Don't make a big deal about it, just do it and cool down. And to those of you who disagree with the people on this site and can't respect our music, do everyone a favor and use another site. Thank you.

Dennis Coffey

It seems rather fitting that you just experienced the emotional ride at the taping and then come back to this place. I think that kind of says it all right there. Good hearing from you Dennis.

David,

I have only been participating in the forum for approx. 4 days. This has been the single catalyst for providng and receiving the utmost crucial information regarding not only Northern Soul but the true spirit for keeping the love of it alive. If not for the strength & spirit of a few individuals the the Funk Brothers may never have had their dream shared with the rest of the world. If not for your spirit my friend, the rest of us might not have had to opportunity to share our spirit for the love and memories of a period in history which has touched the lives of unmeasurable amounts of people directly or indirectly in all aspects of there lives. Never let anything deter you from living your dream..! Keep The Dream Alive..!

Thank you all for your kind remarks and support. As a semi-silent partner in this wonderful adventure, I am hoping that David is simply taking a break from the forum. Or as my late father liked to say, 'not putting a period where god has put a comma.'

As I am the behind-the-scenes geek / artist of the site I guarantee you all that this site and forum will remain online and continue to grow.

We are priveledged and honored to have Ralph so amiably and patiently moderate this forum and I trust he will continue in that role. [Do I get to be an honorary Italian now too?] I am hopeful, too, that David will continue to author the wonderful articles that we dole out as time permits, even if he chooses not to participate in the forum. I am hopeful that others will step up with word and picture and continue the telling the story of that amazing era.

As many of you know, I moderate the sometimes very raucous Discuss Detroit Forum, so my skin is about five feet thick by now as I and the forum have been pissed up in about every way imagineable. But I still abide by a simple dictum: Welcome to enter, welcome to leave, and welcome to come back.

Viva Soulful Detroit!

I am going to get another picture, too!

Soulfuldetroit is the single, most important entity that has stimulated many visitors, professional or otherwise to do, create, make, record, write, collaborate, laugh and cry. Nearly every emotion possible has happened through this web site at one time or another. It still is the best on the web, truly and you are part of the phenomenon that makes it unique. Bringing the people who made the music and those who listened, together, is a gift for us all, to share stories and make new friends. Like I said in the past, most of my friends are right here. I may not post as often as I should, but I am overwhelmed at the positive spirit most of the time on the forum. I guess some like to be a little controversial and some don't. Sometimes sitting on the fence is quite comfortable for me, but one day I may jump off and stick my foot in it, inadvertently. They say a still tongue means a wise head. I agree, but if everybody had a still tongue, we would have no stories and maybe no music! As Dennis said about the guidelines, I agree, but maybe they need repainting now and then as a reminder to us all that we have a special site here and we owe it to you David and Lowell. Please take time to consider what you have done for us all. I am sure those who have been on the forum since the beginning have the utmost respect for you and still find their daily visits entertaining and informative. Things can only get better as it grows, but there will be times like this, when it seems more trouble than it is worth. Don't wander too far David, this is your virtual electronic home and I am so pleased I can visit you from time to time and say hello and learn a little more each day.

We shared enough time together while you were here in Detroit and at my studio to let me know just how much you really love the music, the history, and artist, writers, producers, engineers, and others who help to complete the music circle of which you are also a part of.

I for one will not tolerate or allow you to leave this beautiful site you gave birth to,simply behind someone pulling your emotional chain. Take a break, take a walk, have a drink of ale or hitch hike to London and air out. But don't think about leaving here. I consider you a dear friend and if you really want to remain as such you can't break off this special friendship with me and all the rest of the real SOULFUL DETROIT.COM folks who love and appreciate all of your effort and execution of what is probably the most interesting site for authentic
music info on the planet. See ya soon, And you're always WELCOME at my place. Peace

David,

According to the following website,

http://www.alopeciaareata.com/

alopecia areata is not caused by life style or stress. "This whole thing has made me ill" may be true, but it would seem that "This whole thing" has not caused your alopecia.

Of course: It is a big emotional shock to adjust to a condition that causes ones appearance to change. It is good that you are going to cut yourself some slack so you can mellow out and get comfortable with reality.

However, I have faith that the passion burning within you that created this website will rise from the ashes. There will come a day when you will be back.

That will be a wonderful day!

Have a happy thanksgiving.

DAVID MEIKLE; IT IS WITH A GREAT MEASURE OF SADNESS THAT I HAVE LEARNED OF YOUR UNFORTUNATE DECISON TO SEVER YOUR PRESENT RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SOULFUL DETROIT FORUM. YOU HAVE HELPED TO CREATE THE SOURCE OF RECORD FOR THE TOPIC OF 60'S MUSIC IN DETROIT AND IT'S ACCEPTANCE ON A LARGER SCALE. CERTAINLY, SOME OF US WHO WERE CLOSE TO THE SCENE MAY SHARE DIFFERING VIEWPOINTS AS TO THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CERTAIN PEOPLE, PLACES, AND EVENTS...AND THEIR ROLE IN THE MAKING OF THE MUSIC. AS I HAVE STATED BEFORE... A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION, WHICH MAY NEVER BE RESOLVED, SHOULD NOT INTERFERE WITH RESPECT, CIVILITY, AND COMMON COURTESY. I WOULD ALSO WISH TO COMMEND OUR MUTUAL FRIEND MIKE MCLEAN, IN THAT DESPITE A COUPLE OF DIFFERENCES OF OPINION, IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS, WE CAN AGREE TO DISAGREE WITH A MEASURE OF MUTUAL RESPECT AND FRIENDSHIP. I HAVE NO ALLIANCES ON THIS FORUM, ONLY A DIVERSE GROUP OF FRIENDS WHO SHARE A MUTUAL INTEREST IN THE EXPERIENCES AND SOUNDS OF SOULFUL DETROIT. IF MY EFFORT TO SHARE AN HONEST AND ACCURATE APPRAISAL AS TO MY VIEW OF THE REALITY OF THE SUBJECT MATTER HAS CONFLICTED WITH ANOTHERS VIEWPOINT, THEN WE CAN AGREE TO DISCUSS OR NOT DISCUSS THE SUBJECT MATTER ON THIS FORUM OR IN A PRIVATE CONVERSATION. THESE ISSUES, HOWEVER, DO NOT DIMINISH MY APPRECIATION FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE IN MATTERS RELATING TO MY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS SITE. THEREFORE, I SHARE WITH MANY OTHERS MY WISHES FOR YOUR CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND PEACE OF MIND. HOPEFULLY, YOU CAN IN THE FUTURE CONTRIBUTE YOUR TALENTS TO THIS OR SOME OTHER VENUE, AND RECIEVE THE SATISFACTION YOU DESERVE...BEST WISHES...STU

Dear David,

I took Jayanna, her husband, my friend Alicia, her brother, and my pal George to see SITSOM yesterday. Everybody absolutely loved the film. I was delighted at the strong positive response, and frankly, I enjoyed it so much that I may go back for a third viewing. I haven't gone this far overboard since I saw "Star Wars" at the theatre four times in the late 1970's.

Again, we saw it at the Regent, in Hollywood, where the digital projection process is used.

We all agreed that "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" sung by Joan Osborne, and STARRING THE FUNK BROTHERS, stole the show!

I asked Jayanna to compose another letter to you, and she agreed, but she asked that we wait until her husband leaves to return to Iowa in a few days. In the mean time, she loaned me another picture to scan. This picture was taken at about the time that Berry Gordy Jr. wrote "Lonely Teardrops," when Richard Nixon was Vice President.

Have a nice day!

David M:
I've been away for a few days & have just been made aware of your illness.
Your health is definitely the top priority so if taking a break from S.D. would help then you have my absolute support. However, do not stay away for long. You have done far too much work and made such a contribution to stop now. I've shared the Golden World Story webisode with those who have worked in the music industry for decades and they are all impressed with the fact that you were even able to get through to Joanne Bratton, which probably had been attempted but failed by many journalists.
So, be well and take care. We look forward to your return.
Peace,
Kevin Goins - "KevGo"

David,
I too have been out of town, and wasn't aware of what's been going here.

When you were in town last May, and we went to Armen's gospel recording session, I saw a look on your face that night which could only be described as pure love. Love of Detroit and its' music. David, you can't leave here...your life revolves around the music and through you and this site, many of us have reconnected with each other, have made new friends, and this has all been because of you.

Take as much time as you need, but please come back - we all need you. And, you need us too!

To all, David is truly touched by you sympathies. He has assured me that the show will go on with the webisodes, the conclusion of Golden World and more. He just needs a break from the forum so we'll give him his space. Besides he will have more time to work on what he describes as a 'mountain' of stories. Soulful Detroit lives.

I was relieved to learn from David just the other day that he would still be involved in the webisode projects. So he is not really gone after all. Just focusing on what he truly loves doing. I speak for all of us David when I tell you how pleased we are to know this.

Yes, good news indeed Ralph. So relieved to hear that David's not left us completely, just working in another room.

DAVID/LOWELL - Steve Holsey of the Michigan Chronicle mentions Soulful Detroit this week. Look under "Entertainment" "Weird Ways of Stars."

Jayanna is sick. Her lungs are shot. I will keep you posted.

I have kind have fallen in love with her, since she fell apart.

I am trying to help her out. I hope to offer more of her true love of Scotland.

Mike

At this time of year we need to think of those in poor health.

Please tell Jayanna we're thinking of her.

sincerely
David
