This is mainly for Vickie,
who is doing a book about the great Tammi Terrell and I know a lot has been on here in the past.
But I just want to list a few of her obscurities(over here at least).
And Vickie,
if you do know them(which Im sure you will)at least we get the great Tammi Terrell on a talking point once more.
Tammi Terrell
born Thomasina Montgomery.
Married the former boxer in the 60s.
Hitsville Acetate.
Tears at the end of a love affair.
(as Tammy Montgomery)
Scepter records-1224
If you see bill.
Wand records-123
Voice of experience.
Checker records-1072
If I would marry you.
Try Me records-28001(as TANA MONTGOMERY)
I Cried.
I Apologise if these have been on before and if any errors would appreciate any corrections.
Vickie,
I would appreciate it if you could send on my best wishes to Tammi Terrell's sister, and let her know just how much joy her sisters music still(and forever will)brings me to this day.
many thanks.

Yes, these "facts" need to be checked quite sorely! Tammi is in no way related to Jean Terrell, and there are some other errors on that list!
By Vickie (64.12.97.7) on Sunday, November 17, 2002 - 10:13 am: |
Hey MEl,
Between myself and Weldon we keep Ludie informed
of what her well wishers are saying.
I thank you for starting a thread on Tammi.
I am still compiling info on her Discography.
I will dig that out - it's on a disc..I bet Ritchie beats me to it though
Part of what I am tappping into here is the magic of Tammi and her magical voice that brought so many people joy and still does..
Ludie and Tammi's friends are helping Tammi's fans to see her as she was to those that love her....
PS: hey Weldon how are you?

Isn't Jean Terrell of the Supremes the sister of former heavywieght contender Ernie Terrell?

Jean and Ernie are related..Tammi is not related to them..

Promises Kept,
the reason why I do these kind of
threads is that the errors that I do make will be
corrected by people in the know.
Such as all the people that have come on here to say so,
Anyway you said there are more errors,
please would you be so kind as to elaborate.

I always loved Tammi Terrell...since the first record I remember by her "I Cried" by Tammy Montgomery on Try Me Records which I remeber on a pop station in Miami! My favorite Motown recording by her is "Come On & See Me".My friend Mary Wells was very upset when we heard that Tammi had passed away.
By Randy Russi (169.139.180.100) on Monday, November 18, 2002 - 10:10 am: |
For the record--I've seen "I Cried" with both
"Tana" and "Tammy" as her first name. I believe
that "Tana" was a misprint. I also know that
both Maxine Brown and Brenda Holloway replaced
Tammi on a tour with Marvin Gaye when she became
ill. Randy Russi

Mel, is the acetate version of Tears at the End of a Love Affair different from the released version on her LP?
Thanks.

Hello everyone,
Can someone please explain what is a "acetate"? Thank you.
I don't have Tammi's pre-Motown material but she certainly did wonders with the material she was given when she worked at Motown. It's wonderful that people still have a great interest in her. For a moment, it seemed that she was just remembered for her songs with Marvin, & that's it.
Peace!

One of my favorite non-Motown Tammi songs is "If I Would Marry You." So much grit, so much sass. She's a classic.
By John Lester (217.40.234.94) on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 10:26 am: |
Joe
Richard Searling played an acetate of "Tears.." on his radio show some time back. Martin Koppel owned it. The acetate version is quite different in that the mix is more R&B and grittier than the version that appears on the album. It was in mono too so it sounded more like a candidate for a Motown 45

I read in Randy Russi's piece that Maxine Brown and Brenda Holloway replaced Tammi during Marvin's tour. I also have read that Barbera Randolph and Ann Bogan also replaced Tammi. Did all four women replace Tammi on the tour(s) at various times?
By Randy Russi (169.139.180.100) on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 03:38 pm: |
I'm not sure! Probably this was on different
performance schedules. I just know the one tour
that Tammi passed out in Marvin's arms was con-
tinued with Maxine and then Brenda.
By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.42) on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 04:22 pm: |
Randy,
Was it just that Maxine or Brenda were the support acts on those particular dates and
filled in for Tammi ?
By Vickie (64.236.243.31) on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 05:15 pm: |
Nish - Tammi wrote that song - one of the only recordings she wrote and recorded that I have found..Explains the sass perhaps.
John, yes I got your email..can't open it though..dunno why?
Dig this thread..

Vickie, there's a slice of wonderful information I did not know. Tammi wrote one of my favorite Tammi songs. That's great!
And I'm glad the project is progressing as well as it is! Your book will be such an appropriate tribute to TT

I have been a fan of Tammi's for quite some time now. I can honestly remember the very moment I became a Tammi Terrell fan. I even remember what I was wearing and where I was!(I know that sounds crazy, lol) For years now, ever since that day, I have been doing whatever I can to learn more about her whether its reading whatever small information I can get my hands on about her,or listening to her music(with Marvin and her solo work). If it wasn't for her I would not even be a fan of Motown music, or even sixties music in general. My dad and I joke sometimes that I know more about his generation of music than he does and I owe it all to Tammi. The little that I do know about her life, has brought me through alot of personal issues that I have had. Gosh, i didn't realize i was writing so much! I can go on and on about her! Anyway, I just wanted to express a little bit of what Tammi has meant to me through out the years. For some reason it is hard for me to explain this in words because it doesn't seem like that is enough. Anyway, thank you Vickie for responding to my previous post! I guess I will end it at this:-)

Thommy girl,
It's great that you feel that way - simply beautiful and wonderful and it's the exact thing I am bringing to life with this book - she was something very special to her fans, friends and family..Her story is full of courage and strength so it's very special that she helped you through tough times..I share these stories with Ludie and she is touched that people love her sister so..

D. Gordon--I believe both Maxine Brown and then
Brenda Holloway were actually hired to replace
Tammi on the tour. Probably Brenda wasn't
available at first and so they hired Maxine.
I really don't know, but perhaps someone who
knows either Brenda or Maxine could check with
them.

GrahamD. It is great how young people when exposed to Motown of the 60's love it almost as much as us original fans.Good music does not die!I love the new CD "Cellarfull of Motown" one of my faves is the Tammi Terrell "All I Do" what a great recording....Tammi out does herself and Clarence Paul proves what a top knotch writer/producer he is.

Hi, I've been listening to Tammi's songs today. I have to say that right now, my favorite pre-motown song that she did was Sinners Devotion, but it changes constantly cuz I love them all! Just knowing that she was so young, singing her heart out. That puts a smile to my face. She worked so hard to get to where she wanted to be and I admire her for that. The pre motown songs versus the motown songs are quite interesting. Its cool to hear how her voice sounded as a teenager just getting started in the early sixties to how she matured vocally as a young woman of the later sixties. There was a progression and a very nice one indeed. Bye
