Sis,
Are you Pistol's sister? If so, why did I not know this?
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 11:18 pm: |
Unfortunately, no, I am not the late Great Pistol's sister. We were just soul sisters and brothers, as I am with all those who love the funk brothers. Thanks FRIDAY, for your condolences, I will pass that to Pistol's immediate family.
My late brother John Lucas was the bass singer on the song "The Mighty Lover" which was played on the radio show recently broadcast by David Miekle in Scotland.
Is that why I got my own thread? (LOL) I am just a layperson music fan, who can't play an instrument except the CD PLayer, and who can't sing a note cause I used to try and sing like Aretha Franklin. (LOL) Thanks anyway. RALPH, YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIS THREAD, right away!. "THANK YOU, THANK YOU LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, "Sis takes a bow, as she leaves the stage." (LOL)
LOVE YA, SIS

LOL, I am blusing. Ralph, I thought you would back me up. Go ahead Ralph, you know what your job is. I am just an old fan who was fortunate enough to have been there when it all happened. And I don't mean inside of Studio A. I mean in the line outside the clubs. And at the record shop counting my pennies to purchase the 45's.

Sorry Sis,
This thread goes NOWHERE! You may be blushing ( and for some reason I know that this would suit you well ) but the fact remains that you have endeared yourself to many of us on the forum.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 11:57 pm: |
Mel - Thank you so much. I wish my brother was here to know that. My family heard the radio program, and want to thank DMiekle for the dedication. My brother had a great voice, and his favorite bass singer was "Melvin Franklin." (He named his son Melvin Franklin, and we call him Blue.) His favorite group was "The Four Tops." You should have heard the great things he said he explaining why the Four Tops are "The Classic Group."
Karyl - the song you heard me sing was recording about eleven years ago. I haven't tried to sing anyting since.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Sunday, November 17, 2002 - 12:01 am: |
Vickie - Thank you also. It's good to know that there are some younger fans out there.
Sue - You are right about being a funk sister. I didn't know until I got on line, that there were zillions of people who felt the same as I about the music from Detroit. During the film, I couldn't keep still. Tears flowing, and body rockin.

Believe me, you deserve your thread more than I deserved mine! Mine was called "Ask Millie"...I guess I was sort of the Ann Landers of music, but no one knew that I didn't have a clue what I was talking about! Hmmm...! It was fun while it lasted! Yes...the great imposter!!! Seriously though, if our mutual friend Sue says you have talent, then who are we to question that? The girl knows her stuff!! So, welcome aboard!

Dear Sis
I told you more than a year ago that you had much to say and this just goes to prove it.
It was a pleasure to dedicate The Mighty Lover to you and your family last month.
I met you on my last two visits to Detroit and they were memorable evenings to say the least.
Remember Bomacs and drummer Rick Gould performing "Turn back the hands of time" in sensational style.
Remember the James Brown lookalike/soundalike who tore the roof off.
BTW you didn't tell about the Enchantment connection. I have all their albums.
Thanks for your company Sis and thanks for making the Big D such an incredible place.
sincerely
David

Standing outside the clubs, buying the 45's and watching the pennies is what many of us did. It makes us special when we can reflect our lives and the music we enjoy with others here and journey forward with our happy memories of the past (and sad) and hope for the future (another SITSOM no2!!).

Hey Sis, I scrolled way down and found that you had your own thread so what better place for me to just say that, since I've been visiting this wonderful forum, it's plainly evident by your posts just how much heart and goodness are embodied in you. I would sooner tick off a tech guy than upset you (not that you're easily riled but I imagine someone would have to be really out of line to make you mad). Anyway,if I ever get around to my Chuck Berry/"Promised Land" tour of the USA and make it up to Detroit, I wouldn't consider my visit complete if I didn't get to meet you. You've been very welcoming to me since I began posting and I really appreciate it.

By Sue (64.12.97.7) on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 10:00 am: |
Sis is one of the many Detroiters who bought the 45s and albums, went to see the act live and in general helped create and support the Detroit sound -- that supposedly we Detroiters didn't appreciate.
What's really cool is that she and I grew up in different parts of metro Detroit, I listened to mostly Keener with some CK and 'JLB, she listened to 'CHB and 'JLB with some Keener, but our musical overlap is almost 100%. We love the same music, because we heard and bought the same music ...(and Sis I know you'll recognize "Across the Street" by Lenny Henry if I played it for you, it was all over Detroit radio in the '60s ...)

I met Sis at the Laborfest last fall (a big outdoor party for the Detroit unions)and she is a really nice upbeat person that loves our Detroit music. She should be hired by the mayor to intoduce people to the great things about Detroit, she'd do a knockout job.
From Sues note it sounds like Sis and I listened to the same stations. My radios in my car and house were only allowed to tune in wchb and wjlb as that was the only kind of music I gave a damn about.

Thank you so much for your kind words my friends.
John Dixon, I would be happy to meet you when you visit the MotorCity. You are correct about me being upset. (LOL) Don't want to get too emotional world wide about the soul beat of Detroit "The Funk Brothers." I try to remain calm on the Forum. Don't want David and Ralph to kick me out. Overall I think I am basically a good person. So, look me up when you come to this great city.
R&B - Well, the information I have to offer is just from my experiences which are valuable to me, and that's all I have to offer. Nothing great, not extrordinary, just being. It really makes me feel good to be thought of in such a nice way. No one can ask for more than that. Thank you so much.
Sue - I knew, in that era, how great the music was. It was a feeling deep down that you knew was genuine soul. When I was a little girl, we went to a big Methodist church. Services were very quiet and formal back then. Across the street from our church was this little church. You could hear tambourines and drums beating. Although I was only 4-5 years old, I wanted to be across the street. It was something about that sound. In the 60's I thought of that little church and the feeling I had back then. Jazz, blues, gospel, all intertwoven within the music of our era. Yes, I was there during that great period, and I knew it was great at the time.
David MEIKLE - Hello my friend. Just think, the next time you come here, I will have remembered something new. (LOL) I am still working on getting a copy of those rare pictures which we know exist at Lonnie's mother's house. I hope to see you in May.
Sis

Lynn, KevGo, SteveK, Allen - Thank you all for your words.
I am an "upbeat" person. Sometimes I act so silly, I have to remind myself of how old I am. This summer I felt so good, I could have gone to every event where there was music. I sure tried to. I just can't dance anymore. But I can sure move from side to side. I am seriously thinking of taking ballroom dance lessons.
As I said before, I don't know what I would have done without my music. My first recollection of any recorded music was the Dixie Hummingbirds, Harmonizing Four, Blind Boys, Fairfield Four, etc. The rest is history.
Thanks again for your lovely words. Peace & Love,
Sis

Sue, you mentioned Lenny Henry's "Across The Street". That is considered a Carolina beach music standard and I've been hearing that one since I was knee high to a grasshopper! I've always loved it. "Across the street there's a party going on..."
By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 01:35 pm: |
..."everyone's invited but me ..."
That single was huge in Detroit. Pat St. John, who was just 19 when he started with CKLW and Keener so he was a kid in the '60s too, sent me a bunch of not-heard-on-oldies-radio-anymore songs that we grew up on, and hearing stuff like "Across the Street" is such an instant flashback.

Sue - Now I remember that song? The background sounds like the Marvelettes. And the piano has that Marv Johnson flavor. The Flute also sounds familiar. That was a groovy song to dance by. What label was that recorded?

Sis, I agree with all the praise and acknowledgement that you've been given here. I also love "Across the Street" and in answer to your question, it was on Atco records. Down at the bottom of the label it says, "A Bob Crewe Production".

SisDetroit,
While most of us may not know very much about you, but it seems we have mutually found one another in this wonderful place, and, having met one another, I've noted YOUR name keeps coming up on this thread... like a dear 'ole friend.
While I am new on this forum, let me take a moment for one acknowledgement, as others have, in that I've enjoyed reading all your comments and of your insights, as well, of those you've shared with us, most enlightening, just the same.
And, oh yes... "Across The Street" by Lenny O'Henry? Of course I remember that one!
I have an original (mint) copy of that record '45!
"Across The Street" (Atco 6291) debuted on WKNR "KEENER 13" on March 26, 1964, stayed on WKNR for 7 weeks, having peaked at the #5 spot on the WKNR Music Survey Guide, for the week of April 23, 1964.
Now as to Lenny O'Henry's only one *BIG* hit... now that 'killer', that was my jam!
One other "honorable mention"... was, another WKNR favorite (of mine) from (early) 1964, "Who Do You Love", by the Sapphires.
Remember that one? Of course you do!
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Sunday, January 26, 2003 - 09:26 pm: |
John Dixon - As you can see I faught hard to get this thread tossed. But Ralph kept it anyway. And the last few threads of November, I thought, well, if I don't respond, it will go away. And then here you come. (LOL) Thank you friend.
Shakmani - Good to see you. Thanks for coming aboard. We had good times in the 60's. You didn't have to be a certain age to see the MotorTown Review at the Fox, or the gospel explosion at King Solomon, but remember when I used to put make-up on you and a wig so you would look old enough to get into the different clubs? (LOL) Aren't you glad I did? Just think of all those great artist you would have missed had I not done so. Artist of whom we knew were great, but did not know they would become legends, or that the young fans born in the 70's and 80's would "claim them as their own."
Jim Feliciano - Yes, I do remember that song. I think I stil have my 45 on that one. That was a very popular song.
Take care everyone. Sis

Hi Sis - Did you do the jerk, twine, boogaloo or whatever back in the 60s? I often wonder just how popular these dances were in the day.
Is there any chance of you visiting Taiwan?
Graham
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Monday, January 27, 2003 - 02:49 pm: |
Hello Graham...I was once in a boogaloo contest in a backyard party (twenty-five cents to enter the gate.) But I was a young teen-ager. When the jerk came out, I was an older teeen, and I had slowed down a bit, but tried to hang in there. The twine was quite easy, but the older I got, the less I danced, and the more I just listened and observed.
Well, I won't be visiting Taiwan unless you develop a web site/message board called "Taiwan's Soul Perspective:, then I'll see you there. :o)
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Monday, January 27, 2003 - 02:51 pm: |
Come to think of it, Graham, that may have been the hullygully contest rather than the boogaloo.

SIS,start a dance craze thread.
Alvin also had THE BARACUDA.
My all time favorites were THE MADISON,THE N--RO BOP,THE CONTINENTAL,THE INKSTER SHUFFLE.
A dance thread can go on forever, but your right about todays dances,no names for them and no nothing,oh well. With all the dances we did and learned back in the fifties, sixties,we got from the blacks and they were just so kool and all had names to those dances, and we were always well dressed,as were the brothers. It was so exciting to just watch them do their steps, the chicken I can still do.But the most exciting thing to see back then was an all black ROTC drill team.I seen in 1958 McKINZIE HI,CHADSEY HI and CODY HI,where I went,CODY looked very bad next to the all black drill teams, what excitement.

And, while we're all on the floor,
Don't forget the 'SOUPY' and the 'CURLEY' shuffle... either, or, and you'll sure to 'impress' the ladies....

Now if I had a time capsule!
The Capitols also released "Cool pearl" on Karen. The flip side of that was the classic "Don't say maybe baby"

Jim,
Curley Shuffle??
Do you mean the thing where he lay on the floor on his side and "ran" in a circle?

Shakmani - It would take forever.
Jim & Sue - Boy, are you bringing back memories. I definitely remember Soupy doing that. (LOL)

Sue,
The Curley Shuffle was actually what I call Curleys' early version of the Moonwalk. When he would keep one leg/foot stable and kick the other backwards to slide back. Hence Michael Jackson.
Those chuckle heads were far ahead of their time.

And Funky Too..!

You bet they were funky. OK I know what you're talking about Horse, Curly was on his feet for that proto-moon walk. He had a lot of steps we imitated as kids. I don't know if the spinning-as-he-lay-down one has a name, but it was a popular stunt in my household ...can you tell I was raised by wolves (all brothers)?
