Ive just been going through
some records, tapes etc,and played the following
which totally blew me away as I hadnt played them for a long time.
all by the great voice of
PATRICE HOLLOWAY(unless I hear different)
Stolen Hours(a rare/northern soul classic).
Ecstasy
Those d.j.shows(which I think is a un-issued track, but not sure, but sounds superb and the backing is totally magic.
Black Mother Goose
a different version of the Sam Nesbit rarity on Amos records(although in my opinion)not as good as Sams, but still a good version that I first heard around 1972(an early Mecca/Torch sound)
Where as the Sam Nesbit was played at the twisted wheel around 1970,and to this day has eluded me.
I came close to a copy, but a mate of mine got to the collector before me by 8 hours.
Anyway,
PATRICE HOLLOWAY
Many thanks sister, for just a few of the fine tracks that Ive listed above(apart from many others)that made me mooove my feeeeet,
to the soooound of the beeeeat.
A Great admirer and huge fan of yours
Mel(and then some).
p.s.Any in-put appreciated.

Brenda Holloway's West Coast recordings would heavily feature sister Patrice on vocal back-ups.

Can I also mention the officially released on CD track "For The Love Of Mike"

Top of pageBottom of page   By MEL&THEN SOME (195.219.7.81) on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 12:09 pm:

John,

I do know the track
For the Love of Mike, but I am not to keen on it,but I should of mentioned it.
Many thanks
MEL.

There's an obscure A&M single from 1965 called
"I'll Be Satisfied" (A&M 761) written by Brenda,
Patrice and Chester Pipkin. This might be another
Patrice disc but I haven't heard the record yet.
The single is credited to The Sequins - apparently
unconnected to any other group of the same name.

The flip side to "(He Is) The Boy Of My Dreams", VIP single #25001 was called "Stevie" and was not "For The Love Of Mike". I have heard this record personally and have to say I like the B-side "Stevie" the best of all.

Brother Love

Are you saying that you heard the tracks from a copy of VIP 25001 or just the tracks themselves?

I think the correct spelling is "S-T-E-V-I-E" cos Patrice spells out the name in the song.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Joe Moorehouse (64.12.97.7) on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 12:47 pm:

My understanding is that For the Love of Mike was recorded by Patrice for Motown, but was never put on vinyl. Since the release date of VIP 25002 (The Serenaders)is listed in Don Waller's book as 1/24/64, it's probably safe to assume that 25001 was pressed up sometime at the tail end of '63 or the very beginning of '64. The B side is spelled Stevie, not S-T-E-V-I-E, in spite of the fact that she does indeed open the song by spelling the name.

Can anyone substantiate some information that I have gleaned

Did Brenda Holloway and her sister Patrice record a single--Come Into My Palace I presume that this was the same track that Lee and the Leopards recorded on Gordy 7002 in 1962 ?

Top of pageBottom of page   By John Lester (81.132.25.227) on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 06:33 am:

There was a picture of VIP 25001 on auction a while back - it listed the top side only - or that is all I was shown as a photocopy.

There is no way that "For The Love Of Mike" would have been allocated as the top side, as Joe points out - VIP 25001 was far too early.

........and yes melmo - I have heard "Come Into My Palace" - its a cross between

a duet between Brenda and her sister Patrice,

OR

Brenda singing lead with Patrice doing backing so loud, it could be almost be a lead!

It has a similar backing track to the version on the Supremes and it IS also the same (!) song as done by Lee and the Leopards. If you know the Supremes version, they do it somewhat different to Lee and the Leopards.

Whilst on this thread, Stevie does do a bit of Stevieism's on "a" version of Patrice's "Stevie" (or "S-T-E-V-I-E" as I have seen reference to). I have not got VIP 25001 (wish I did!!) so I dont know which version was intended to be featured on that 45.

Melmo - you need to buy the book Motown by Master Number - I can see you are into this quite deep!!

I admit that I don't know much about Patrice; in fact I had never heard of her until I bought "A Cellarful Of Motown". But I love her contribution to that set, "A Touch Of Venus". Can anyone tell me anything about that song? I thought it had a sort of supper club-ish, rat pack-era arranged by Nelson Riddle feel. Then I saw the songwriting credit was Ed Cobb who, among other things, wrote for and produced The Standells ("Dirty Water") so that blew out my earlier assumptions. Can anyone fill in the blanks for me on this terrific song? Thanks.

John

You make me feel real old!!! Oh how I wish I could re-discover for the first time, some of these records that I have had in my collection for the past 40 years!

Marvin Gaye has recorded the song too...

Oh Edna, let me hear your beautiful song....

Top of pageBottom of page   By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.26) on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 01:05 pm:

John,

Ed Cobb was also the man behind those Ketty
Lester records like "Love Letters" - he was
a very versatile guy who could handle jazzy
material with the same ease as the punkers
he wrote and produced for the Standells and
the Chocolate Watch Band.

Top of pageBottom of page   By P.J. (12.227.39.23) on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 04:05 pm:

Ed Cobb also penned Brenda's "Every Little Bit Hurts" and "I'll Always Love You".

I was told recently that Patrice Holloway was the lead on The Belles " Don't Pretend " [ [ Mirwood ]
.It does sound like her , can anyone confirm ? Best ,Eddie.

Top of pageBottom of page   By MEL&THEN SOME (195.219.7.38) on Sunday, January 19, 2003 - 09:16 am:

I always thought it was Shirley Matthews that sang lead on the Belles?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Brother Love (12.65.162.175) on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 07:26 pm:

Let's not forget that Gloria Jones recorded "The Touch Of Venus" as well on her 1982 AVI album "Reunited".
The album was entitled "Reunited" because it teamed up Gloria and Ed Cobb for the first time since the release of her first solo album "Come Go With Me" in 1965. Ed was also the producer and writer of her classic recording "Tainted Love".
