That's a great piece in the News today about "Standing In the Shadows....", written with a lot of love, obviously. And of course I'm really delighted by what you wrote about me. My parents will get a huge kick out of that. Thank You.

Marshall,
Thanks -- some of what I wrote got cut for space (as usual) so now that my story's out there, I'm going to post more when I get time about the Apollo show. Like, how Allan "made" me sit up onstage with the guys as they rehearsed ...I vibrated to Babbitt's bass for about a week ...

I'm not the only one who loved "Wonderful One" -- you've got to make some appearances with the Funks and do that again so others can hear it.

Sue,

Great story today (11/13/02)! As all your writing on the Funks has been and will continue to be I'm sure.

Marshall:
As a long time fan of your music ("Whenever You're On My Mind" being my most favorite), I was tickled by your splendid treatment of "Wonderful One." You said that this was your first appearance at the Apollo. That's funny...I recall a character you portrayed in a movie who made his Apollo debut 45 years ago with King Curtis watching his back...His name was Buddy Holly.
Peace,
KevGo

The photos are absolutely wonderful.

Two of my heroes are in there, Joe Hunter and Jack Ashford.

Heroes for their work both inside and outside of Motown.

Thanks a million.

Hi Sue,
You have always been an excellent journalist and you
have been very generous, yet very professional in
bringing the various tons of info on Motown and the
Superb/truths about the almost forgotten "FUNK BROS"
who without their love and assistance I would never have been a part of their history. Thank You for all you've mentioned and helped to bring to the forefront. You deserve a RAISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sue
By far the best article that I have read on SITSOM.
Great to have you on Soulful Detroit.
Of course I still would like to know what your ultimate Motown song is?

Clay,
From your lips to my editor! Thanks, I'm only trying to reflect a bit back of what you guys did.

TD ...not one song! "Ask the Lonely," "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted," "I Was Made To Love Her," "You're All I Need To Get By," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," "Cloud Nine," "It's a Shame," "What's Going On," etc. Can't narrow it down!

Sue - your articles are read and re-read and saved. After you menitoned "Ask the Lonely" the other day, although I have the set "Fourever", I went down and went through my LP"s and pulled out my old Four Tops LP's. I had to see the original covers and play the original records. What a feeling it was.

I Did exactly the same,
The 4 Tops still give me goosebumps after 30 years of listening and collecting there records.

Sue, besides your great piece on the Funks, I have read Susan Starks review of the movie. She gave it four roses, the highest designation. I also heard Susan Starks on WWJ radio on her weekly rating of movies (one of the most listened to news stations here in Detroit) and she said she rated it "a juicy four bells, with a killer backbeat." Please tell Starks thanks for her wonderful review of the film. The Detroit News has really stepped up to the plate on this one.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (64.12.97.7) on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 02:39 pm:

Lee,
I will try to pass that on. I don't always agree with Stark's reviews, but she lived here through most of the '60s, while Motown was exploding, so she "got" it, just as former Detroiter Elvis Mitchell did. (Stark's now back in her native NY). What's been interesting to a lot of us is watching the reactions of people who aren't deeply into the music, after they see the film, they're caught up in that joyful feeling you get from the music, and what a fun town Detroit was and still can be.

I can't help but laugh at the Freep reviewer objecting to Bootsy, especially that he did a "non-Motown" song. Hello?? It's explained very clearly in the film that the Funks did a lot of bootleg sessions. Three stars --pffft. Get down with your bad self ...

Four stars, baby ...

Yeah, I was just coming to the forum to blast Terry Lawson for his review. But, then again, anybody who would work as a scab and take away a good union worker's job obviously doesn't "get" Detroit on a pretty profound level.

And how is it that only THREE of the notes in Robert White's intro to "My Girl" are memorable?

I guess I'm picking nits, but the News has OWNED the coverage of this story!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (64.12.97.7) on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 02:52 pm:

Mc5rules -- thanks, and thanks for reminding me ...That Freep reviewer wrote that there are only THREE notes in Robert White's intro to "My Girl"??

Does he really not know the difference between Jamerson's opening riff, and White's guitar??

Here's an interesting posting on the online Forum of the Detroit News website:

Comments: I keep hearing how Eminem's a decent guy behind the scenes. Fine, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. But he should go see "Standing in the Shadows of Motown." Maybe it'll inspire him to learn an instrument (besides cussing) and put out a decent album some day

Sue,

It seems that Lawson is always trying to let the reader know that he's hipper than they are, although confusing the 3 note bass intro with the guitar part is baffling. However, I did like his line suggesting that the musicians who didn't participate should be ashamed of themselves.

I liked Stark's review, in that she conveyed the emotional punch the movie packs, particularly to a non-musician (I don't think I can handle much more emotion that when that choir comes in after the modulation in Ain't No Mountain).

Having said that, we're all grateful to you for having followed this thing from the early stages. I noticed your name in the credits at the end, and you certainly deserve to be there.
