...Carl Carlton, aka Little Carl Carlton. I went to high school with him in Detroit. I remember seeing him standing in the halls at Murray-Wright singing into empty lockers. He recorded two records that I know about. I graduated in June '69. Where are you Carl?

Maybe Sis can help you out on this one.... In the meantime, unearthed from my archives, here's a pic she sent me of Carl and her brother, Mr Wendal:

I was just thinking about Carl Carlton! He sang what could possibly be the best dance song of the 1980's - She's A Bad Mamma Jamma. I think I heard it on a web radio station & couldn't get enough of it.
He also recorded the best version of the much covered song - Everlsting Love.

...and what about "Competition Ain't Nothin' Y'all"!

Thank you everyone..that solves a mystery for me. I have not lived in Detroit for more than 20 years. I have not been back to visit since 1989. My body is in California..my heart and mind reside mostly in Detroit..the best of "back in the day". I am sure you guys understand!

Perky - Carl's 'Competition ain't nothin' is famous in soul circles in the UK. Reveared by many. It is a great record and he is not forgotten.

Hey,
I hear that Carl is about to embark on recording a NEW cd and he's only hours away from cutting the tracks.

That sounds good Clay - I have some lyrics that refer to something that happened in Detroit to me and my wife 3 years ago. It is connected to Carl Carlton and something I heard about him. I do not know if it was true, but the lyrics flowed. I have no melody, but after a confrontation in Greek Town, it was with Carl Carlton whom I thought I spoke to. Are you producing the tracks? Best of luck if you are.

Hey Medusa9e, you dug out one GREAT (and OBSCURE) R&B *hit* record!

Motor City GOLD... as I remember it by ERIC & THE VIKINGS, with their big 1970 debut hit, titled "VIBRATIONS".

ERIC & THE VIKINGS had originally hailed here, from Detroit, obtaining minute regional exposure here, before propelling themselves with a record contract with Detroit's own SOULHAWK Records.

FYI--

Eric & the Vikings's "VIBRATIONS" [SOULHAWK #1009] debuted on the WKNR Music Survey Guide at #29 spot for the week of June 9, 1970...

..."VIBRATIONS" stayed "right on" the KEENER playlist for six consecutive weeks thru June and July of 1970, finally making TOP 10...

...and, it was during this particular time-frame this SOULHAWK record *peaked* at it's highest... by taking the #8 spot on KEENER 13, for the week of July 16, 1970.

Unfortunately, I no longer have this record in my own collection. It's been years since this (bright yellowed) record '45 had become, well... inadvertantly "lost"... if you know what I mean.
