This is part of a series on the state of radio today that started with Sunday's Detroit News. The first set of articles were prominently featured on Sunday's front page, and also very well done. Taken as a whole, it explains what is happening to radio on a national level and relates it to Detroit radio past and present. Pretty much the way one would want their local major market daily to handle it. Good stuff.

On the web, the series can be accessed at:

Ken

Susan,
Great piece! Brought back so many memories. I remember the day WKNR came into being. It WAS hallowen. I was still in the Sunliners. We were appearing at the Club Cliche and had all arrived there for an afternoon rehearsal. We all ended up in one car in the club's parking lot and just happened to have the new KEENER station on the radio. The prgramming was so fresh and interesting ( Cloudy memory here...but in my fuzzy brain I remember some voice that was saying.." This is Jack O Lantern...and then they would do some music or some sort of Halloween things...) that I don't think we ever got into the club to rehearse.
Regarding the greater freedoms of the DJs then. I remember Mickie Shorr playing only one song all night long for some reason. The song was " CHAINS ". I don't remember the artist or the reason he was doing this that night. The fact remains that he DID it. Can't imagine something like that going on today!

Thanks David -- there's more in the print edition Monday that they didn't get on the web yet. I'm finding the webmaster to give him a little whack ...it'll be on shortly. It's a profile of Scotty Regen ...there's a q and a with him on Sunday's edition ...

Top of pageBottom of page   By Livonia Ken (136.2.1.153) on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 - 10:59 am:

Sue,
The Regen Q&A is up there as of this morning. It's at the bottom of the page I linked just above the Bob Green Q&A. Great series!

Regards,
Ken

Ken,
There's a Scott Regen profile that was in Monday's print edition but isn't on the web -- the q and a was meant to be "in addition to" the profile ...it'll be up soon.

These web guys ...(sigh)

Brilliant work, yet again. There's a wonderful journalistic heft to the series -- well researched and colorfully written. It looks like it took a lot of work, but it also looks like it was fun to work on. I think I'm going to make the students in my journalism class read selections of it this week, to show them how it's done.

Great job, Sue!

Thanks, Sue, I get it now. I haven't recycled my print edition yet, so I will check it out again.

Ken

Sue - Fantastic!!!

(I didn't go out yesterday to get a paper. My sister called me and informed me of the article. As you know my ankle was kinda sore from the exercise at the Roostertail.)

Sue,I'm a subscriber to the "other paper". I know thats a swear word to you, but your articles are making me hoof it down to the store and pick up the afternoon news. I've already commented to you how"right on the money"your reporting is. Thanks for the memories and thoughtful insight on the state of radio now and how it used to be in the glory-days. I can still hear Mickey Shores radio theme song Night train by Buddy Morrow blasting away and my parents yelling at me to turn that radio down "what are you trying to do raise the dead"

Sue,

Great article. Louie, Louie was recorded in my hometown by the Kingmen and Paul Revere and the Raiders the same week. The Raiders version was the regional hit here, but the infinitely superior Kingsmen version broke nationally and now I know how. Detroit radio.

Oh and better buy a paper tomorrow (smile) ...

Your support in that was very important to us.

Thanks Ken, and Steve and mc5rules, that means a lot. Doing the story was fun although there are more editors involved in a 1A story than is sometimes comfortable for a writer more used to working on one's own. The musical analogy would be, having several producers talking to you all at once about a piece of music you're playing. (And contradicting each other).

Ralph, I would have loved to've seen you guys in the car at the Club Cliche. That was "Spooktacular" that kicked off Keener. I'll have to ask who was "Jack O'Lantern." Why wasn't I old enough to go to the Club Cliche (sigh)?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 - 10:01 pm:

Sue,
I wish I could remember more about the show but I can't. All I seem to remember is we were all very fascinated with what was being presented and couldn't make our selves get into the club to rehearse.
Yeah...too bad you were just a baby girl then. The Cliche is where I first met Millie when she was getting in with fake ID.I'm nt sure how old she was then but she must have been quite young. You would have liked the Cliche. It was quite the place.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (152.163.188.68) on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 - 10:09 pm:

Millie! Why didn't you share that fake I.D. with me, you bad girl ...

I was popped with a fake I.D. at a TEEN club, oh the shame ...I wasn't even 13 yet. The BBTC, in Birmingham ...and I think Punch Andrews personally wrestled me out of the Hideout. At least I like to tell him it was him ...

Ralph, I worked at the Cliche with Tommy Good and judging from those steamed up windows in the parking lot after the gig,a lot more was going on than listening to the radio.

Ah, the good old days

Lynn,
That's funny...and TRUE! From the standpoint of the band, club owners Bill and Ruby Williams referred to us as the stud farm.
Yes...the good od days.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Millie (68.40.209.129) on Wednesday, November 13, 2002 - 07:19 pm:

Hey Sue & Ralph,
I'm still quite young!! I was 18 with ID for 21...I used to go to the Gay Haven, then drive over to Joe Bathay's then on to the Cliche'! Boy, did we have fun! No bills, no kids, living at home, looking as good as an 18 year old can, and had a smart-ass attitude to boot! Wow! I can remember like it was yesterday, unfortunately I can't remember what I ate for lunch today! Oh well, "Youth is certainly wasted on the young"!

You'll always be that 18 year old kid to me. As far as the smart ass attitude...some things never change sweetie.

Sue...
I really appreciate your writing ability. It is crisp and informative...and full of great memories. Maybe another book on old Detroit radio like Carson's (with a different perspective) would be a good idea. Again, thanks.

Nice series about Detroit radio but the piece titled "Memories on the Dial" reads like it was lifted almost verbatim right out of the book, "Rockin' Down the Dial: The Detroit Sound of Radio," no sources were listed.

Radiofan,
I need to take issue with you regarding your posting. I hope you are not inferring that Susan Whitall plagiarized some other work for her piece in the News. Susan is an EXTREMELY respected journalist on this forum, as well as the Detroit News, and I assure you this could never be the case.
