Marvin and Diana singing so sweetly about a bad relationship. Go figure. Great big arrangement. Rockin' backing track and melancholy Harmonica (Stevie?). Drums are in your face.

Now where's the band in LA where we can do this LIVE?

oooooh!!!!
Larry!!! One of my ALL time fav's..
I listened to it this morning on repeat over and over as I got ready for work...
Love that song...there is a bit of drums/percussion that sound like Marvin & Tammi's Ain't No Mountain High Enough - LOVE IT!

Put on the headphones and focus in on Jamerson. He constantly flavors the tune with little signature bass dittys. You will be amazed by what you hear.

Wow! I still have the 45 my sister & I bought in 1974 along with Love Unlimited Orchestra's "Love's Theme" and Ray Stevens' "The Sreak!" (what can I say except my family had strange tastes!). The duet reminded me of the classics Marvin cut with Tammi. It even had that Marvin & Tammi feel to it. The Marvin & Diana album is full of gems as well.

Ooh this is my favorite Marvin & Diana duet. I remember my sister and I begging our mom to buy this back in 1974. Marvin & Diana sound so great together on this I think she was carrying her second child when they recorded this.

This was cut in L.A. There were no musician credits so it's not clear who played on this session.

H.W.,
Is it at all possible My Mistake, Marvin and Diana, was recorded in Detroit and shelved till its release in 74, or even was recorded early on in L.A. and was sent back to Detroit for Jamerson to dub in the bassline?

I seem to remember reading (David Ritz?) that the Marvin & Diana "duets" were recorded with the two artists working separately on their vocal contributions... something to do with Ms Ross' aversion to Marvin's penchant for filling the studio with a certain type of (unbranded) "smoke" while recording.

Great story Ritchie. Thanks to all for the posts.
I'd like to hear the other version per Promiseskept post.

Harry, did Toots Thielemans (harmonica) ever record on the LA Motown stuff?

Ritchie,
Diana had a strong aversion to Marvin's " smoking habit " and made it quite plain that she disapproved. One nght before a session Marvin was rolling one and Diana really got on his case about it and told him to refrain for the session. Marvin just looked at her and said " Then I can't sing ".
