Here I am again looking for some help on one of my records. Does anyone know if the Georgettes (female grp) on the Sabre label is Detroit? We played it on our latest Harmony Train show (featuring some obscure vinyl tracks - no CDs - only vinyl - only 45s). I've come up with no info on this (what I think is an) awesome R&B/soul group. Sounds mid 60s to me. You can hear it if you tune into our show. It's archived on our site at: http://www.harmonytrain.com. Just scroll down a bit when you get there, and you will see the playlist, and can click on an icon which will bring up the RA player to hear the show. I am going to try to show the scan (if I can figure out the directions on adding a picture here....:)

Any help would be appreciated. I like to have as much info on any/all group 45s I have!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Nikki.

There was a Detroit label called Sabre, but I believe it's unrelated to the one shown here. The Detroit label operated in the early '60s and chiefly released rock and roll records--many by the band who started the label, Thunder Rocks. It was gold with black print.

The Sabre Records example you show here was also responsible for a nice Northern 45 by the Fabulous Dinos. Don't know where it was from (though it has an east-coast look), but I'm pretty certain it's not Detroit.

Nikki,

I think it might be from somewhere on the East Coast. Steve Verroca was a producer who worked with people like Link Wray. I'll see if I can find out anything further.

Nikki,

No idea about the record, but I love the font!

Thanx to all who have responded so far. As to which Sabre label, I assumed it not to be the Chicago Sabre (sister to Chance) which shows #102 to be the Five Echoes "Lonely Mood" from 1953.

I'm also interested to learn more about the group - members names, if possible.

As to the font & now finally learning how to upload images here, I spent one evening taking a crash course on this forum's "get fancy" page!!!

Hi Nikki,
I see N.R.C. on the label -- that's the National Recording Company (aka NARCO) out of Atlanta, GA. That doesn't necessarily mean the group was from Atlanta, but there likely is a tie to that southern company.

Jeff,

I was thinking the same thing - maybe NRC were
the distributors for Sabre. Joe mentioned a
record by the Fabulous Dinos. They were also known
as the Fabulous Denos and had two singles on King
which were produced by Bobby Smith who operated out of Macon, Georgia. However I've got the label
for the Fabulous Dinos as Saber not Sabre. It
might be that the label had to change the spelling to avoid confusion with a simlarly named
label.

There seem to have been at least three Sabre labels. The fifties Chicago label. The early sixties Detroit one. The Georgettes' one which might be from one of the Southern states.

Haven't been able to find any biographical info.
on the group. It doesn't help that there are at
least two girl groups called the Georgettes.

There's a West Coast group on Ebb, Jackpot,
Challenge, Fleet and United Artists who were
fronted by singer / writer Rickie Page and
who were apparently named after her husband /
co-writer / producer George Motola.

There's an East Coast group on Goldisc with
a 1960 single who just might be the same as
the Sabre group but I couldn't say for definite.

Anybody know the whereabouts of Steve Verocca,
the writer and possibly producer of the Sabre disc. He was Link Wray's drummer in the fifties /
sixties and continued to work on Wray projects as
his producer well into the seventies. Wray was
from Maryland - maybe the Sabre Georgettes were
a local group that Verocca "discovered"

Questions, questions, questions !

Davie, you're right about the label name on the Fabulous Dinos 45 being spelled Saber, not Sabre. But it's otherwise identical--design, colors, typeface, everything--to the Georgettes single, so presumably they changed the spelling or one is a typo.

Jeff, Davie, & Joe - thanx for all the great info and for the time you spend trying to help me! That's what it's really about - trying to help each other and share information!! Anyway, I did some research on line and also came up with the Ebb Georgettes grp, but also think it's not the same. I am not at all familiar with the Fabulous Dinos. If someone has the record, any chance of posting the image on this forum? Anyway, again thanx to all of you for your time.:)

Joe,
I've half a dozen or so other discs listed for Saber with numbers running 101, 103, 106, 107, 108
they're all from 1963. Maybe 102 was a typo -
stranger things have happened

NRC was apparently both a label and a distributor, and they might have been independent of one another. The label goes back to the 50s, with hits by the likes of Joe South and Tony Bellus, and appears connected to Bill Lowery's music empire. It kept going with occasional releases into the mid-60s (i.e. Georgia garage band legends Little Phil & The Nightshadows). NRC had a connection with some releases on the Shurfine label, among many, many others.

#83 (on the Georgettes label) is a very early number, so unfortunately I don't have enough data to get an accurate date for it. I've seen NRC numbers on records released as late as 1968-69.

Mel & thensome, I wasn't trying to "rub it in". :( I was just sharing an image of the label that particular #104 Willie Nix, that was mentioned here. I thought perhaps some here might enjoy the image. (And I'm having so much fun playing with the "bells and whistles" on the "get fancy" portion!! :)
Anyway, I really appreciate all the input everyone here has had and all the help I've received on this thread. I thank you all for all the responses.
