Since I first came to Soulful Detroit I pondered ways to share myself musically with everyone here . I read StuBass' introduction and thought he is was on the right track. I am originally from Asbury Park, New Jersey (Yes, Springsteen country, and no, I never played with him but I did play with members of his band Max Weinberg and Clarence Clemmons from time to time). For those who have not been there, Asbury is a little Beach city on the Atlantic ocean of about 30,000 people.I was sick as a child and was introduced to music at age 8 as therapy.

I started out my musical life as a piano player in 1958. I stayed with that instrument for 2 years and lost interest as I did not wish to play classical music and that was how you learned piano legitimately in the 50's (BTW I am 53) but I had caught the bug! in December 1962 my best friend got a guitar for Christmas and brought it over to my house. I plugged it into my stereo and the RIAA eq for the phono input made it sound deep. I instintively started playing up and down the low "E" string and my friend suggested that I get a bass and we would start this band called JB & the All Stars (after Junior Walker...). I worked that whole summer of 1963 and bought my first bass just before my 14th birthday.

The first 45 record I bought was Dee Dee Sharp's (1961?)"Mashed Potatoe" followed by the Marvelettes "Please Mr Postman". by the time I bought the bass I was a finatic about the music coming out of Detroit and whoever was playing that mean bass!!!

It did not take that long before I found out who HE was Eddie Singleton's mother lived on the next street over from me and his younger brothers and I were friends. I understand that Bill Bongiovani (who was from Asbury but I did not know him) worked or was associated with Motown as an engineer (Mike, Bob or Russ might be able to clear that up) but Eddie Singletary was a minor record producer I think. Anyway, I found out Jamerson was the bassist and I proceeded to buy every release that came to the NJ record stores from Motown for the next 9 years.

It is hard to explain how I heard what Jamerson was saying musically but he spoke to ME with his playing, everybody knows he is a great innovator but what a bassist hears in that musical message is different (at least it was for me). StuBass, as a bassist, you probably know what I mean anyway, I needed to be able to do that. I know Jamerson taught me some very good lessons as far as groove.
I want to share some of what I am as a musician. The sound of the bass IS my language. More to come...

Nice story Bassland. I like your New Jersey connection. Max Weinberg and Clarence Clemens are a couple of major players.

Hi SisDetroit,

Rob Hayes and I go back 20+years as we were both students at Musicians Institute. Rob has worked in the TV music industry and has songs on a great Guitar album "Voice of The Guitar" for Jim Stubblefield's lable. After the music of Motown changed (Detroit to LA period) I was searching for a style of music to replace it as my favorite. When the groove oriented "Wave" style jazz came into being I felt I had found a new musical home.

I will put up some examples of other types of music that I have recorded over the years including a Country project and some big bnd Jazz stuff on upright bass.

Later,

BassLand

This is all so cool....This communication is incredible. You bass players may get a kick out of hearing this; I learned SO much about the groove (and about what NOT to play) when I was still in Kalamazoo (Michigan)around 1978. I worked for two years with a bass player named Ronnie Harville. Ron had played with Jr. Walker & Ike Turner (among others). I feel like I "grew up" after playing with Ronnie. Another case where a guitar player learned how to understand the groove from a really good bass player!! Plus we had a great drummer named Billy Ebmeyer (who now runs th Oakdale Post recording studio in Vegas).Ronnie told me he was going to work with some of "The Pips" (from Gladys' band) & he moved to Atlanta ('79-'80). I haven't heard from him since. If any of you know him, please let me know. Anyway, since I've been in L.A. (past 20 yrs.)Bob Lee is "THE MAN" around here. As fate would have it I met & heard Bob Lee shortly after leaving Kalamazoo. Bob more than satisfied that thirst for THE groove. I am blessed to be his friend and have him in my band.-Rob Hayes of The Rob Hayes Project (RHP)

Rob,
Thanks for posting. I have always felt that a band is only as strong as it's bass player. Best of luck with your group.

Hi SisDetroit,

I tried to play the first of your "go to" posts, and my computer got swept away in a whirlwind of "Real Play Updates" that ended up in a dead end where a warning window kept popping up to the effect that something that I don't understand, and don't know how to fix, was preventing my listening to your original sound posting.

Now my computer is all fucked up. Instead of the player I was using before, I now have a new player that does not work.

I hope you are satisfied!
