MEL AND RALPH; YOU GUYS GIVE ME WAY TOO MUCH CREDIT TO DESERVE MY VERY OWN THREAD. I JUST GOT BACK HOME FROM THE DENTIST, AND TALKING ABOUT MYSELF MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I NEVER LEFT THE DENTIST'S CHAIR...OUCH! ANYWAY...AND PLEASE DELETE ME IF I START TO RAMBLE...I WAS DROPPED ONTO A STAGE BY A SPACESHIP AT ABOUT THE AGE OF SEVEN. I USED TO SING, ACCOMPANIED BY MY AMAZINGLY TALENTED BROTHER...BRUCE MILLER ON GUITAR..HE WAS ABOUT 12 AT THE TIME...AND MY COUSIN KENNY ON DRUMS. I USED TO DO ELVIS, JERRY LEE LEWIS, CHUCK BERRY, ETC. TUNES. A FRIEND OF MY DADS DECIDED THAT I NEEDED AN INSTRUMENT, SO HE BOUGHT ME A BEAT UP OLD TENOR SAXAPHONE FROM A PAWN SHOP. I TOOK A FEW LESSONS, BUT HAD TO TAKE A BREAK FOR A FEW WEEKS TO GO TO SUMMER CAMP. MY BROTHER FILLED IN FOR ME AT MY SAX LESSONS, AND THUS...A MUSICAL MONSTER WAS BORN...NOT ME. I CONTINUED TO PERFORM WITH THEM FROM TIME TO TIME, LEARNED A LITTLE PIANO, AND WAS RECRUITED BY MY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO LEARN TO PLAY EITHER THE DOUBLE BASS, OR CELLO. I GRABBED THE BASS, AND POOR RAMON ROBINSON WAS STUCK WITH THE CELLO. I STUDIED THE UPRIGHT BASS, AND SOON BECAME ACCOMPLISHED ENOUGH TO BE ASKED TO JOIN THE DETROIT JUNIOR ALL-CITY ORCHESTRA. JUMPING AHEAD, IN HIGH SCHOOL I ALSO ASKED TO PLAY IN THE ALL-CITY ORCHESTRA, BUT MY ATTENTION WAS MORE INTO JAZZ AND R&B. I PLAYED IN A CITY SCHOOL SPONSORED JAZZ QUARTET, WHERE WE PERFORMED AT VARIOUS SCHOOLS AROUND THE CITY. BACKING UP A LITTLE BIT, GROWING UP IN NORTHWEST DETROIT DURING THE BIRTH OF MOTOWN RECORDS, PUT ME IN CONTACT WITH MANY OF THE MOTOWN ARTISTS OF THE DAY. I GUESS I JUST TOOK FOR GRANTED BEING AROUND THESE PEOPLE AS NEIGHBORS AND FELLOW DETROITERS. AS MOTOWN GREW INTO WHAT IT ULTIMATLY BECAME, IT CERTAINLY HAD A LARGE INFLUENCE ON MY MUSICAL TASTE'S. I AQUIRED MY FIRST ELECTRIC BASS IN MY EARLY TEENS, AND TURNED MY ATTENTION TO MORE CONTEMPORARY MUSIC. THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL, I PLAYED IN SEVERAL MUSICAL GROUPS IN AND AROUND THE CITY. THAT IS WHERE I CAME INTO CONTACT WITH MANY OF HE ARTISTS THAT I HAVE OFTEN REFERRED TO ON OTHER THREADS. I WONT GO INTO ANY OF THOSE NOW, AS THEY TEND TO MAKE BETTER STORIES IN SMALL SNIPPETS, PROMPTING MY MEMORIES FROM THE STIMULATING DISCUSSIONS ON THIS FORUM. I CONTINUED PLAYING AND BECOMING INVOLVED IN VARIOUS MUSICAL PRODUCTIONS THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND WELL INTO COLLEGE. MY BROTHER BY THIS TIME, WAS GAINING RECOGNITION ON A GRANDER SCALE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. I OPTED OTHER CAREER PATHS, INCLUDING WORKING FOR SEVERAL YEARS AS A DETROIT RADIO NEWSCASTER. I ALSO FROM TIME TO TIME GOT INVOLVED WITH OLD FRIENDS FROM MY MUSIC DAYS IN SEVERAL RELATED PROJECTS. I CURRENTLY LIVE IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA, ALONG WITH MY BROTHER, WHO ENJOYS A RENOWNED CAREER AS A TELEVISION MUSIC COMPOSER, ALTHOUGH HE HAS A VAST LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE FIELD OF RECORD PRODUCTION. THAT'S ABOUT IT IN A "NUTSHELL", ALTHOUGH AS I READ VARIOUS ITEMS ON THE FORUM, MY MEMORY KICKS IN, AND I ENJOY RELATING STORIES AND FILLING IN THE "CRACKS" FOR ALL OF YOU PARTICIPANTS...JUST DON'T ASK ME WHAT I ATE FOR BREAKFAST THIS MORNING???? MANY THANKS FOR ASKING...STUBASS

RALPH; RUSS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PEOPLE AROUND. I CAN'T SPEAK TOO MUCH ABOUT HIS TREMENDOUS ABILITIES AS A WORLD CLASS ENGINEER...I DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FRAMITZ AND A VEEBELFLETZER..I CAN ONLY RELY ON THE OPINIONS OF THOSE MUCH MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE...BUT I HAVE NEVER RUN INTO RUSS WHERE I DIDN'T FEEL BETTER AFTER VISITING WITH HIM THAN I DID BEFORE I SAW HIM...REGARDS...STU

Okay, since this is Stu's thread, I'll come clean. When I first saw his handle on this forum, I read the first part as "stub" and the second part as ... well ... never mind, let's just say it seemed odd. I was relieved when others started referring to him as "Stu" and he expressed his interest in the "bass", though. :)

Regards,

Interesting tidbit: the mountain that Dean Paul Martin's plane crashed into was the same mountain that a plane carrying Dolly Sinatra (Frank's mother) crashed into, killing her.

I heard that Frank said to Dino something to the effect of "What did that mountain ever do to us?".

I forget where I read this, but it is true!!

Best,

If you really want to know what "D.T." is, just ask Ralph...he'll be happy to tell you.

Caused a little furor on the thread did we? Well, you know how hot tempered the Italians are, and you certainly know how even tempered the Jews are (yeah, right)... I always wanted to be Italian, and Ralph always wanted to be Jewish so we sorta flipped our blood lines.

Pickens was a fabulous upright and electic bass player, and the first guy to mention the name Jamerson to me. I don't know what happened to him. I think he played in the Miracles road band in the early 70's and was very active in the Detroit jazz scene and then ??? Stan was with McKinley Jackson and the Politicians, and I think he did some work with Edwin Starr. I'm surprised we haven't heard about him either.

Hey Larry,
Scotch 'N' Sirloin hasn't been around for years! Yes, I do remember Checker BBQ,,,I have a funny story that revolves around the place! I remember how great their coleslaw was!

Hi Stu,
Whatcha talking about that Zukin's was no good? Their ribs were delicious. The Rib Shack on Livernois and the Lodge were fantastic...especially the poo-poo platter!

OK MILLIE; I NEVER SAID THAT ZUKINS WAS "NO GOOD". BUT DID THEY HAVE LIVE MUSIC? HUH??? RIB SHACK WAS ALRIGHT, BUT THEY HAD NEW OWNERS EVERY SIX MONTHS. A HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND'S FAMILY OWNED YOUNGS BBQ...GREAT SOUL FOOD BBQ. THE SAUCE WOULD BRING TEARS TO YOUR EYES. IF YOU'RE IN LA, CHECK OUT THE "BEAR PIT"...AWESOME. GETTIN HUNGRY...GOTTA GO...STU

HEY KEVGO; HOW'S IT GOING? I KNEW BOBBY IN HIGH SCHOOL. HIS DAD WAS A DRUMMER, AND BOBBY HAD A SET OF VIBES, WHICH WAS HIS PRIMARY INSTRUMENT AT THE TIME. WE FOUND OUT BY ACCIDENT THAT HE WAS A "KICK ASS" DRUMMER. I WOULD BE GLAD TO GIVE YOU ANY INFORMATION THAT I COULD, HOWEVER, IT'S PRETTY MUCH LIMITED TO OUR SCHOOL DAYS, PLAYING A FEW GIGS, AND RUNNING INTO HIM ONCE OR TWICE IN LATER YEARS. THANKS MEL; AS I MENTIONED TO YOU BY E-MAIL, THAT BASS LINE POPPED INTO MY HEAD A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO, AND I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT IT WAS...THEN...BOOM..."WANTED AND NEEDED" BY GWEN. IT ALL CAME BACK...THE SESSION, BACKGROUND SINGERS, ETC... I REMEMBER THE FOUR BAR BASS INTRO, WHICH WAS PROBABLY ACCOMPANIED BY PIANO (ROGER BASS), BONGO'S (JAMES GREER), CONGA (GEORGE HEIGHT), AND PERHAPS GUITAR (SHAWN JACKSON), AND DRUM'S (SID THE "ROCK" JONES). WE ALSO WERE ACCOMPANIED BY TWO ALTO SAX'S, ONE TENOR, ONE BARITONE SAX, TWO TRUMPETS, AND A TROMBONE...ALL TEENAGED KIDS. IT'S A THRILL TO ME THAT YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THAT PARTICULAR CUT, SINCE I REALLY DONT RECALL MUCH ABOUT IT'S RELEASE OVER HERE. PLUS, IT WAS A PLEASURE TO ACCOMPANY THE VERY TALENTED GWEN OWENS...THANKS FOR THE MEMORY...STU

Stu,

I regret that my sincere effort to be honest and educational may have caused you to investigate, and question, the possibility that you were, if not disgruntled, at any rate far from gruntled; thus leading to a change of viewpoint which had the potential of being a source of attenuation of the vast flow of infinitly valuble information that otherwise is forthcoming, on a regular basis, from one of the very best sources of wisdom that this forum is privlidged to absorb and adore.

GEEZ MIKE; NOW I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT ALL THOSE YEARS OF TURNING KNOBS AND SETTING EQUALIZER BARS HAVE LEFT YOU WITH STEADY HANDS...STU

Top of pageBottom of page   By M.McLeanTech (66.218.42.38) on Tuesday, November 26, 2002 - 12:24 am:

Stu,

I didn't turn knobs and set equalizer bars.

I drilled holes in panels for mounting the shafts on which we installed the knobs.

We dreamed of panel mounted displays of spectrum analizers, but I could not con Berry into paying for them. In those days, such a display could cost the price of a new Lexus, in today's money. I tried, but Berry refused.

I suggest that you consider the idea that it would be good for your soul to try to gradually try to master the technique of using upper and lower case as you type.

Cheers,

Mike McLean

OK MIKE; I NOW FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE KNOWING THAT PANEL MOUNTED SPECTRUM ANALIZERS CANNOT CAUSE LONG TERM DAMAGE TO ONE'S NEUROLOGICAL SYSTEM...AND HAD YOU ACTUALLY GONE INTO CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY FOR A LIVING, YOU'D PROABLY BE DRIVING A LEXUS RIGHT NOW (JUST IN CASE YOU AREN'T)...///LIKE I'VE TOLD YOU BEFORE, THIS TYPING METHOD CARRIES OVER FROM MY NEWSCASTING DAYS, AND OLD HABIT'S ARE HARD TO BREAK. IN ADDITION, MOST OF MY POST'S ARE GENERATED FROM MY WORK (I SURE HOPE THAT THE "BIG GUY" ISN'T READING THIS), AND I HAVE ABOUT THREE MINUTES MAX TO CRANK THEM OUT. But perhaps I can locate an "UPPER CASE ANNONOMOUS" chapter in my area...REGARDS...STU

You guys are nuts !!!!! Great Humor. I still can't believe that I'm reading about legends from legends. Totally facinating. Totally. I mean, for instance...Russ...I remember reading on the back of an album by the Four Tops (Back Where I Belong) and the Tops telling Russ to "Keep Hangin'" (there was a song on the album named "Hang" a Temps and Tops Duet) and years later, I'm reading about Russ and the whole family. Wow!!!
For every singer, writer, arranger, producer, engineer, and everyone else that contributed to the world of music, my heartfelt "THANK YOU" to all of you. aljaydu
