I just mentioned to Larry on the Sunliner thread that Sonny was a heavy hitter. This proves it. I'm hoping he shows up here.

Sonny Sanders, this guy is whatthe scene is all about for me.As well as many others, just look at the list that David has compiled, almost a Rare/Northern Soul itinery of some truly huge dancers in there time, and theres still more to be added.Dont get me wrong as I know of a lot more just as capable. But Jesus christ,00 SOUL,Back St,1970 I Got to rave over that,Gene Chandler,Jackie Wilson,Artistics,Platters,Adorables etc, etc. And if you had a OKEH 45 at the Torch of any of the Majors stuff, then you were the dogs b......s.Must just add my personal thanks to all the Sonny Sanders on the scene, and especially to all of you on this site that are still Second To None and still going at it.Ive had (up to now)30 years on the Rare/Northern Soul Scene and thanks to one and all, through your workmanship has got me through the bad times and even the in-between times(as Big Dee Irwin)so hauntingly put it.Cheers.MEL(ANDTHENSOME).

Where would Brunswick have been without Sonny
Sanders ? OK Carl Davis is a great producer but it was Sonny's arrangements that made a lot
of those records special. For my money he's one of
the best arrangers ever - he deserves a medal for
"Higher and Higher" alone

Davie:
I understand your point regarding Sonny but at the same time Carl Davis must be credited for being the man who really turned Brunswick around at a time when the label really needed it. Like he did at Okeh with the help of Riley Hampton & Johnny Pate, Carl brought Brunswick into the soul era thanks to his bringing together a strong cadre of songwriters at Jalynne Productions (which included Barbara Acklin, Marvin Smith of the Artistics), two great lieutenants overseeing the recording sessions(musical director Gerald Sims and the late, great Otis Leavill) and for having the smarts to know that the Detroit sound was the flavor of the moment and by capitalizing on it would mean success for the label - that's where Sonny Sanders came in. Sonny had the Funk Bros. address book and used it accordingly (Jamerson & "Pistol" were just two of the Funks who played on Jackie's "Higher & Higher") as well as being a dynamite arranger to be reckoned with. I agree with your statement regarding Sonny but let's also thank the man who brought Sanders to Chicago in the first place - Carl Davis.

Kev,

You're right - Carl deserves all the respect he
should get - still, getting Sonny to join up at
Brunswick was definitely one of his best moves :-)

Does anyone know who plays on the single version
of "Since You Showed Me How To Be Happy" - is it
the Funks or is it the Brunswick studio band ?
The drumming on that track is incredible - never
lets up for a second but is constantly surprising
-an incredible track.

KEVGO; NICE TO BE ABLE TO TALK TO YOU. HAPPENED ACROSS THE SONNY SANDERS THREAD AND READ IT WITH INTEREST. IT MAY SEEM LIKE I'M GOING OUT INTO "LEFT FIELD", BUT IF YOU COULD, PLEASE ASK PAUL OR ANYONE IN THE TARNOPOL FAMILY WHAT THE NAME LENA AGREE MEANS TO THEM. YOU MAY FIND THAT IT'S QUITE SIGNIFICANT TO THE CAREER OF NAT TARNOPOL, AND JACKIE WILSON IN PARTICULAR...SEE THE CREDITS TO JACKIE'S "DOGGIN AROUND" FOR A HINT. AUNT LENA WAS MY GREAT AUNT ON MY MOTHERS SIDE. IF THE TARNOPOL FAMILY CANNOT RESPOND, I'LL DO MY BEST.

Stu:
Ah-ha! Lena Agree was Nat's beloved aunt. Both he & Jackie were very close to her.

"Doggin' Around" was actually written by Alonzo Tucker but Nat (for reasons I won't get into here)put Lena as the "writer" . He also had Lena Music as his publishing concern (now known as Tarnopol Music Incorporated).

That's as far as I go....

KEVGO; JUST A LITTLE JACKIE WILSON FOOTNOTE. DURING THE LATE 60'S, I WAS APPROACHED BY THE HEAD OF A PRODUCTION COMPANY THAT I WAS WORKING WITH TO HELP JACKIE'S TWO DAUGHTERS FORM A SINGING GROUP. JACQUELINE (JACKIE) THE ELDEST WAS TO BE THE LEAD SINGER. I WORKED WITH THEM TRYING TO PUT TOGETHER A FEW SONGS THAT THEY COULD PERFORM BEFORE AN AUDIENCE. THEY DID ACTUALLY PERFORM A FEW TIMES AROUND DETROIT THAT I'M FAMILIAR WITH. NICE GIRLS...JACKIE HAD SO MANY OF HER DADS FACIAL FEATURES IT WAS SCARRY, BUT IN A MUCH PRETTIER WAY. UNFORTUNATELY, THE "MUSICAL APPLE" FELL A BIT TOO FAR FROM THE TREE IN MY OPINION. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT JACQUELINE MET AN UNTIMELY AND TRAGIC DEATH A FEW YEARS LATER... STU

Talk about small worlds! You're right about what happened to Jacqueline Wilson - she was murdered in the 1980s. In fact, all of Jackie's children from his first marriage (to Freda Wilson) are deceased.
I'm sure Aunt Lena was a wonderful woman, especially for helping Jackie and Nat when they were starting out in the business.
I'll be speaking to Paul Tarnopol later on today or tomorrow so I'll tell him that we "met".

can i just say a heartfelt thanks to sonny sanders and the joy his music productions has given me over the last 30 years. when just starting out record collecting in the early days ( we didnt know a lot then) if sonny sanders name was on the credits you always bought it blind even if you hadn't heard it. He never let me down which meant a lot to a cash-strapped 17 year old. I just hope he knows how much he is revered over here in the north of england.

Thanks for the back-up.

Millie:
Alonzo Tucker wrote many songs for Jackie but for some reason Nat gave his Aunt Lena (and later his son Paul) the writer's credit for "Doggin' Around." Alonzo finally got the credit he deserved when he & Jackie co-wrote the smash hit "Baby Workout." I know this because I co-produced "The Greatest Hits Of Jackie Wilson" CD (BRC 33001) for Brunswick in 1998.

I believe Sonny sang with Sax Kari & the Quailtones in 1955 and recorded "Tears of Love" b/w "Roxanna" for the Josie label. Very nice record. I know it's way before the "soulful" days, but then as you know MANY of your soulmates started with earlier R&B groups and/or gospel groups.

MEL:
Eddie Thomas is one of my music business "mentors" and I talk to him almost weekly. He lives in Chicago.
Eddie was the manager for Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions during their ABC Paramount/Curtom years (1961-1970). Eddie got the Impressions their ABC deal when he played their demo of "Gypsy Woman" for label executive Clarence Avant and offered to promote the record on the road for no compensation (Avant thought Eddie was crazy but accepted the deal. He would later offer Eddie an executive spot at ABC which Eddie declined). He founded Thomas Records in 1966 with Dick Simon (the owner of St. Lawrence Records)and Jamo's "I Spy (For The FBI)" was his first hit. In 1967 Eddie & Curtis founded Curtom Records (Curtis-Thomas)originally as an off-shoot of their publishing company (also called Curtom). When label execs Neil Bogart & Cecil Holmes left Cameo-Parkway to join Buddah Records as President and Vice-President, they picked up the Curtom and Thomas labels for national distribution (resulting in Curtis closing down Windy C and Mayfield Records). Curtom's top acts were the Impressions and Five Stairsteps while Thomas had Bobby Franklin's Insanity. In 1970, Eddie closed down Thomas Records and parted company with Curtis over management issues. Eddie became an independent promotion man & manager, working with the Stylistics during their Thom Bell years and managing the Independents ("Leaving Me"). He saved his money and started a limo/car service company in Chicago which serves all the top corporations in the Windy City. He still keeps in touch with Curtis' mother (who lives in Chicago) and the remaining members of the Impressions.
I'll be speaking to him soon so I will send your regards to him.
Peace,
KevGo

Clarence Avant as you know is a well-travelled figure in the music business. He alone is worthy of an autobiography.

I don't know Marv Stuart personally and he in fact was the reason why Eddie Thomas left Curtom - Eddie didn't agree with Curtis bringing in a then-unexperienced person into the label as an executive. Also, Marv wanted Curtis to tour a lot as a solo act while Eddie felt that Curtis should concentrate on writing and producing only.

Best thing to do is try to contact Marv via Rhino Records - they're distributing the Curtom catalog currently.

Good luck!

YOUR FRIEND FRED L. BRIDGES

Hi Fred

When I first read of The Brothers of Soul, many years ago in an English fanzine, the writer said "they never made a bad recording."

That stuck with me......and it's true.

I love "I'd be grateful" and "Hurry don't linger"
and "Dream".

Thankyou for the music!

sincerely
David

Yes! People, Clarence Avant is one of the most honest, low key Power Brokers in the music business and aside from being my daughters GOD Father, he's also the person who opened many doors for me and so many others in the music business. In fact I think I introduced Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore to Clarence Avant during the Spyder Turner,Paul Parrish production days. If there were more people in the record business like Clarence Avant, I asure you it would be a better place. I'm blessed to know so many wonderful people. Peace

Sonny Sanders,
What's up ? I remember you doing a few horn dates for me when I worked for Don Davis and LeBaron Taylor
It's good to see so many people here who also appreciate your talent. You are an excellent arranger
aside from being a singer with Bateman's group. LOL

Peace

Clay,
Do you know what Mr.Davis and Mr.Taylor are
involved with these days?
With thanks
MEL.

Mel,
Mr.Don Davis owns and operates several branches of his BANKS here in Detroit(First Independence Bank).
He is currently a pilliar in the business community
and no longer involved in the music industry outside of some independent licensing throughout the UK.

The sad note is that Mr. Lebaron Taylor passed last year and was working for CBS records up until his death. Both Don Davis and Lebaron Taylor made some
wonderful contributions in the music business and I'm sure they'll always be regarded as some of Detroit's finest music pioneers. Peace
