I would like to thank Soulful Detroit and all the contributors to these pages for this forum. As a life long Soul and Motown fan I have read every thread and learned a lot about the music i love. I don't have the in depth knowledge to add factual information to the threads on here, but have the odd oppinion and question i would like to post now and again, if thats ok with you all. Its great to hear the views of people that were actually there at the time our music was being created, Thanks again Soulful Detroit.

Soulie Dave and Carl,
Even though you guys weren't " there " when Detroit was alive with music, it's your questions and opinions that give credibility to Soulful Detroit. Without that this place would't be what it has become. Keep up the good work.

First of all... want to let Georgie K that I love him more than ever and like all his many friends hope that he's soon back on stage as good as new. How about a "coming home party" at the Clawson when George is ready?
Other news: Just came back from Windsor from CKLW's Reunion Party for those who were there during the "The Big 8" days. Not only did I work there at CKLW TV when it was on Riverside but also later at CKLW K800. In it's hey day, CKLW BIG 8 RADIO was the second most listened to station in the US. They were also taping a show called, "The Rise & Fall of CKLW" on the history channel for the fall of 2003.
The history of CKLW is also the history of success of the music in Detroit. The question was: why was it so popular and what bought it down.

The answers are that station had the right mix of music with the right talent! PLUS.. Rosealie listened to everybodies record and did her homework. An artist had a chance to be heard unlike today's corporate radio station. I did the samething when I hosted and produced "Swingin Time" on the TV side. The fiurst thing I did when I got the job as producer & host was to tell the switchboard operator to give anybody who called for me my home phone number if I wasn't at the station. If they wanted to talk to me or had a record or played at a club.. I wanted to know and always went out to check them out! I knew what it was like to be that talent who wanted TV time because I came out of the world of being a musician. TV producers of today (or even then) tend to stay in their own little world and only answer their calls and letters from the "name name stars." But.. let's face it... the stars don't need the TV exposure... but those in the Detroit market do!
In my time, there were a lot of local TV shows that gave me that "break" like Soupy's Show, Ed McKenize and many others.. all I'm saying is that the young and starting out artists need the same breaks that I had during those early days of radio and TV. Believe it or not, during that time.. bands would get paid for appearing on TV. I know that I made sure of that when they were appear on my show.

Hey George,
Good to see you back. You're absolutely right about the T.V. exposure in the early days. Very important to young bands. I don't know how many shows I did with the Sunliners.
I was just thinking of you the other day George. Remember when you used to stop in at Tera Shirma and we would sit in Neica Lee's office and talk and laugh? It was always great when you dropped in on us.

Hey George, was the CKLW reunion on the radio at all? I tuned in Saturday night (the signal still comes in clear and strong in Cleveland, just like in the old days!), but all I heard were the lame talk shows that the station now runs!

Speaking of old times, strangely enough, Johnny Holiday of the old WHK-AM was in town over the weekend to plug his new book, and he sat in with Chris Quinn on WELW-AM for a couple of hours. That was fun to hear!

Best,

Mark

I first came to this forum strictly as a Jamerson fan. Now I'm trying to figure out where to get more Brenda Holloway and Marv Johnson, I'm broke from buying more cd's than I can afford and I can't get anything done because of all the time I spend reading this forum! One of my first posts got a reply from Dennis Coffey within a few hours and from Bob Babbitt shortly after. I couldn't believe it! It's not only the musicians, that make this forum great, but everyone who "was there" and all currently involved and all the fans. I know a number of musicians and music lovers, but this is my only outlet to discuss soul music. Thanks to all.

I'm in Japan for a few weeks but find myself looking here in every day. Reading SD makes me feel closer to home than either the News or Free Press. Thanks David, Lowell and Ralph for making life on the road just a bit easier.

George:
Thank you for your insights. The world was indeed so different than it is now, unfortunately. I meet record people that don't even want folks to know who or what they are as well as these radio/tv "personalities" who have two dozen bodyguards around them. That's why I try to encourage as much participation from the public as possible. If it weren't for them, a lot of us in the music/tv/radio biz wouldn't have our jobs.
Sermon over!
