Hi All,

Does anyone on here with a lot more knowledge than myself, a humble Motown fan for 37 years know what goodies await to be descovered in the Motown Vaults? Particularly JJ Barnes. The recent Cellarful Cd was awesome, and J J's "TELL ME IT AINT THE TRUTH" is as good as it gets for me. I read some where that JJ stuck it out till his contract ran out, about a year. Then got out as fast as he could. He also says that during this time he was in the studio a lot and recorded some good songs. Wonder if we'll ever get to hear them? Thanks Dave.

Hi Mel, back then in the mid 60's we did'nt really know what Motown was, we were just kids attending school disco's, youth clubs, etc. But there was a certain type of record that immediatly hit you between the pop hits of the day and you had to dance, you had to buy what you could at that time. Still in ingnorance you began to notice that your favourate records in your collection tended to be on the same labels. Tamla Motown, Stateside, Atlantic, etc. Youre hooked for life. You hit your 51st birthday and get your wife to buy you Cellarful. Your happy, but still want more! regards Dave.

Michael Jackson did some tracks with Stevie Wonder. I recall the single entitled, "Buttercup."
I'd love to hear that stuff.

A lot of Mowest stuff was shelved. One project in particular I'd like to hear is the group The Devastating Affair. Saw them in a small club in LA years ago and vocally they were excellent! Motown signed them and released a few singles on them that did nothing. They also did a whole album that was shelved.

My name is Rob Moss and I run a little record label in the UK called Hayley Records, dedicated to finding and releasing previously unissued soul material mainly from Detroit, but from other major centres too.

Feel free to contact me on r.moss@coventry.ac.uk for more details on the label or to have a chat.

Almost everyone who digs into the pile of unissued tracks held in their vaults, goes for the 60's output.
I'm sure there has to be just as many unissued 70's gems locked up in there just gathering dust.

Hi JSmith,
Interesting point you make because all of the Hayley releases are 70's except the Just Brothers which was from the same session as "Sliced tomatoes" in 1965.

i think on the sleeve notes of Cellarful they give us a clue about how many good and interesting unreleased stuff they have in the can for the upcoming volume.

I also can not wait. This volume was really awesoem ! regarding JJ Barnes, the version my Martha Reeves of this tune (called "Show Me THe Way"), which actualy saw a release on Gordy is not bad either.

J.J. Barnes (Tell Me) Ain't It The Truth is a great track...as far as an actual song I prefer the Martha Reeves version as "Show Me The Way".I remeber reading an interview one time with producer Phil Spector & he made a statement that Motown had to be recording tons of material since they had so many hits.As a record buyer in the 60's I can honestly state that a Motown 45 was always worth the money because of the quality B side. Many Motown records were purchased by me before they were ever played on the radio because I knew I would love it.

On closer inspection the Cellarful CD notes mention the Martha Reaves version. Just called at a mates house for a listen to it. Great track.
