Brit friends,

Was Edwin's "Scott's On Swingers" available in the U.K. on 45? How did it get to be so well known over there? ...I know why it was a popular song here in Detroit on WKNR, Edwin seemed to give the vocal some extra oomph, or maybe he was just having a good time because Scott was there in the studio (with the Fantastic Four).

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (205.188.209.38) on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 - 11:48 pm:

Oops I didn't mean to be cryptic. Most will know what I mean -- the version of "S.O.S. (Stop Her On Sight)" that Edwin re-did in honor of Scott Regen of WKNR. The vocal kicks.

SUE,to my knowledge it was never released on a u.k.single over here, and it remains a rarity on import.MEL.

Thanks Mel --

How did Scott's On Swingers get to be so well known in the U.K.?

Top of pageBottom of page   By MEL&THEN SOME (195.219.7.40) on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - 12:34 am:

Sue,probably due to the fact that it had the same backing track to Stop Her On Sight which was a Northern/Rare soul dancer around 1967,and us brits being what we are, soon discovered this item and with it having the same backing track became an obscurity.I once had a copy but alas no longer, and a copy today would set you back a couple of hundred or thereabouts.I hope this helps you in some way, must scat, work is calling, catch you later.MEL.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie (62.254.0.7) on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - 03:32 am:

Sue - just to add to Mel's comments, the original version was released here twice in the sixties, and made the charts both times. In May, 1966 it crept to #35 in the Top 40, and fared even better on a reissue two years later, reaching #11. Both releases were on Polydor - the European licensees for Ed Wingate's product at the time. It was then "discovered" that Motown owned the recording (after BG's second Wingate buy-out) and the track soon took its place on Motown Chartbusters Volume 3, alongside recent hits of bona-fide Motown origin. So, the original version was and still is a well-known and well-loved record.

With the Northern Soul fraternity's fondness for taking two-bites-at-the-same-cherry, the alternate version rapidly gained popularity as soon as its existence was discovered. Finally, though the 45 has not been issued here (to the best of my knowledge), the track is available on a compilation CD from UK-based Soul label Goldmine.

(FYI, it's GSCD114 - Floorpackin' - for anyone who's interested)

Ritchie --

When you talk about going to #35 in '66, and reaching No. 11? -- are you talking about the original S.O.S. or Scott's On Swingers?

Because I know the original was a hit here and over with y'all, I was wondering about the special promo.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie (62.254.0.7) on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - 09:40 am:

Yes - that's what I said - the "original version", meaning S.O.S. The "Scott's On.." personalised version wasn't issued here back then :o)

Top of pageBottom of page   By MEL&THEN SOME (195.219.7.118) on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - 05:50 pm:

Hey Sue,that was a total mis-print regards the valuation I put on it.I actually meant to say its only worth about a couple of Quid(say about 4 dollars).Just as if,I wish.Joking apart Sue,although it remains a sought after item, you cant beat the superb original of Stop her on sight. To some today, they take it as a run of the mill chart sound. But I wont forget what my mate told me as we spun the 45.He remembers s.o.s. when first played at a All-nighter around 1967 and always recalls at the time how a fresh new dancer had arrived on the scene that can give Motown a wake up call.Such a lot of (still rare detroit)items came out on the u.k.Polydor label in the 60s.Such as the u.k.mega rare polydor sides like,Supertime,ISpy for the FBI as well as other gems. You Detroiters certainly knew/know how to cut a groove (ahem,so to speak).MEL(Trying to sound cool).

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - 05:59 pm:

"S.O.S. (Stop Her On Sight)" was HUGE here in Detroit, both versions -- I sometimes get blank looks from people elsewhere in the U.S. though. Listening to the two versions back to back, it does seem as though Edwin is putting particular punch in the Scotty version, maybe because they were cutting up.

There needs to be some big old Detroit-UK dance party, maybe here next year, because as much as I've heard about your famous all-nighters, I'll tell you, we Detroiters love to dance too.

There were a couple of clubs I used to go to in the city as a teenager that were off limits to me but my girlfriends and I didn't care, that's where the best time and best dancing was.

We kept it up later -- one place in the '70s was the Aorta. Same schtick as y'all, you'd dance with anybody and everybody, nobody cared where you came from or what color you were, it was just constant motion and some cool moves. We need more of that.

Top of pageBottom of page   By MEL&THEN SOME (195.219.7.118) on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - 06:10 pm:

Agreed Sue,I myself went to my first all-nighter aged 14.Today it seems impossible, but at the time I was fortunate to be in the experienced company of all-nighter(Loons)friends aged a good 5/10 yrs my senior.Again as you say,no colour/racist thing, although not a lot of coloured guys went, yet the guys/chicks that did were all as one(and rightly so).At first it amazed me to see these known hard cases all on the floor and doing the buisness. Many Id seen give out a good hiding or two,yet all dancing away merrily. And just to rub it in,all were bloody good at dancing as well.As Tyrone sang,if only I could turn back, the hands of time.(maybe once).MEL.

Sue,I didnt mean they would fight at venues, just a lot of handy guys in there youth. You couldnt of met a nicer bunch of guys. The scene would always bring lots of new friends together,as we all had that one main thing in common, the music.I Am sorry if I Sounded like a bit of a yobbo.MEL.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (152.163.188.68) on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 09:02 am:

Oh, I "got" you. I meant, they wouldn't have as much energy to work off fighting elsewhere, should the occasion come up.

Not to sound like a yobbo myself, but having been in and around Detroit bars I have seen the occasional fist fly.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 10:34 am:

Sue:
Edwin's "S.O.S." was a huge hit in Pittsburgh (my family's hometown) - WAMO was "whamming" it quite a bit. It was also a hit in Philly (WDAS), Buffalo (WUFO) and definitely in the Big Apple. I remember finding promo copies of "SOS" and "Double O Soul" in the closet of my college's radio station and spinning them on my weekly oldies show (yes, I did leave both 45s there at Ithaca College for whomever my successor would be!). These 45s were well worn, meaning that good ol' WICB-AM/FM were spinning them regularly back when they were popular.
Speaking of places to dance, check out this website www.classicsoul.com - this site is for Felix Hernandez' Rhythm Revue radio show (broadcast over 88.3 WBGO-FM in Newark, NJ). Once a month, Felix hosts a HUGE dance at NYC's Roseland Ballroom which sells out every time. He even released a three-CD compilation of oldies that includes "S.O.S" The Roseland crowd goes bonkers every time he plays "S.O.S." (moreso than "25 Miles" or "War").
Regards,
KevGo

Question...why did Ric-Tic press up many copies onto vinyl (albeit promos) for what was essentially a jingle for a single radio DJ? Thought they'd leave it simply on a tape/acetate just for Scott to use, wouldn't you?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 06:11 pm:

Flynny,

They printed them up as 45s because Scotty Regen gave them away on WKNR to listeners. I think all you had to do was call or write in. So WKNR paid to have a bunch pressed. The 45 has a catalog number and all.

I wonder how many were pressed? I somehow was snoozing and didn't get one at the time.

Top of pageBottom of page   By StingBeeLee (209.104.137.225) on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 07:12 pm:

I don't believe a lot of Scotts...were pressed. If you want the original 45, be prepared to pay big bucks for it, I would guess at least eighty dollars or more, and perhaps I'm lowballing the price. I saw a beat up copy of the record, and it was priced at fifty to sixty dollars. It's one of the rarer Ric-Tics.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 07:15 pm:

Yeah but what town (or country) are you in Stingbee?

I'd bet the best chance would be a used record bin here in Detroit, where most of them were originally. Assuming the owner doesn't know what he has.

Top of pageBottom of page   By ErikT.O. (64.228.114.168) on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 03:10 pm:

Ah, what I would do to check out one of these all nighters... I checked a listing of soul events around the world (known to said site) and the only T-O one that came up was a guy who play's some decent Motown stuff that I'm sick of ('I Want You Back', 'Shotgun', etc- fine tunes but I've heard 'em more than a few times, y'know?)- then mixes in the odd 80's (s)hit! Ugh... so reading that Roseland has one got me jealous. Erik, listening to Stevie's live version of 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix', how many people have covered this?
By the way, a group billed as the Temptations are supposed to play Montreal soon. Anyone know the deal with that?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (152.163.188.68) on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 03:15 pm:

Erik -- could be the Otis Williams Temptations -- likely if they're just billed as "The Temptations."

Dennis Edwards bills his group "Dennis Edwards and the Temptations Revue." Both group have original members and are considered as legit as you can be in a post-Ruffin and post-Kendricks world. I didn't mind that new Tempts cut on the What Women Want soundtrack at all -- their version of "Night and Day."

But forced to choose between the two, I'd put down cash money to hear Edwards, the lead voices of the Tempts were just too important to me.

Hi Sue

It is Dougie Ward's (who lives down the road from me in Glasgow).

He was in my house last night and brought his fabulous GW collection with him.

Next bits will mean more to Mel and Ritchie and other Brits.

His 45's are in immaculate condition so I had to ask him where he got them.

The suppliers many years ago were Chris Savory and Richard Domar of Wolverhampton.

Where was Chris based again?

David,my mate is still in his pit recovering from our session last night after the match.(cant hack it)anyway, regards the value of the afore mentioned 45,he is calling around tohight,so if you dont get another reply with a proper price for it,I will let you know. But off hand we must be starting with at least 150/200 squid. But the way prices are going through the roof once more,it may go up/down,but wouldnt of thought so as you know its a very collectable and rare obscuritie.(Damn you Scott&Starr,in the nicest possible way). `Ritchie,Know only too well mate, after 30yrs now of collecting,I am now on my 3rd collection. And determined whatsoever that none of these are going anywhere. The 2nd collection I had was by far the best in terms of not just rarity, that has never mattered to me,if I like a sound I dont care if its not rare, christ, the stuff thats been so called rare and believe me Ive been involved enough on the scene especially with sharing a flat with my late mate Mr.Lawson,to see items coming and going, being covered up etc,and getting reaction on the scene mainly because of not the actual 45,but only because of the (so called)top d.js.playing them, and there have been, and still is,a load of total crap being played.Must tell you a funny story,Myself and Pete Lawson put my copy of Linda Carrs,in my life,on Ranwood records onto a tape for a well known top D.J.at the time(who I wont reveal,as hes done me know harm)covered it up,cant recall with what name, sent itto him.Now it gets funny,He gets back, pronto,in total euphoria, must have it,name your price etc.So we lead him on until we tell him that the record was played at the Casino and possibly early Mecca in 1973ish and was available to anybody who can listen to or appreciate that ITS WHATS IN THE GROOVE,THAT COUNTS,and could be had at around the time for about 20quid.Jesus are these guys for real or what. After this the so called expert wasnt interested. How many records are overlooked just because of there price etc.Sadly though, this is and always will be a sad reflection on the scene. DAVID,regards the Scotts On Swingers,my mate just belled me,and reckons around 150quid,200 maybe. As he rightly stated its never seen and when it is,always only on auctions. And regards chris savory,he used to be in Newcastle staffs, but moved to this last known address I know of,36 Scrapsgate Road,Minster,Sheppey,Kent.ME12 2EA.This was a long time ago david,so perhaps someone else might know.Cheers guys.MEL.

Sue; I am from Detroit and have searched for records at used bins all over Detroit, including Mays on Eight Mile; Car City Classics, both on Jefferson and Eight Mile; Street Corner Records, where the owner was so kind as to let me look at the 45's he had purchased from a deejay's estate with a lot of Detroit product; Record Time on Gratiot; Musical Memories which I think was near 696 and Dequindere; White's Records on the north end; Kop's Records in Toronto, and etc. I've only seen one copy of Scotts on Swingers, and that copy was unplayable. By the way, I'm looking at my copy of "For the Record - Women of Motown - An Oral History", which I love because most of the info I get is from reading and this forum, as I was too young to be a part of the music scene during the 60's (except for listening to the radio). And I never fail to see your tireless promotion of SITSOM and Motown in the Detroit News.

Has some one with an eye for a $ being naughty me thinks? David, is your mate's copy stamped? Also Sue, re the obsessive interest in anything Detroit Soul, over here in the UK. I laughed about the concept of there being disc jockey copies of that. What other radio stations would play that record other than WKNR here in Detroit, since Edwin S. cut it with lyrics for their jock?

I got my copy in the mid 70's as a student. It is the same as Keith's description and was bought from one of the regular lists at the time (poss. Soul Bowl). I acquired most of my Ric-Tic and Golden World in this way. Within a week or two of buying Scott's On Swingers the list also had white demos of I Love The Life I Live - Tony Michaels and Spellbound - Tamiko Jones which also have scratched in ZTSCs. All were for the princely sum of £5 which was a decent amount of money then. I think they must all be from the same source - real or dubious! They're good enough for me though. I'll never own a 'real' Spellbound.

Hi Mel, there've been a lot of fantastic lists in the past. The best thing about them were the prices eg. £2.50 would get you most items. Now it's more like £250! I didn't know Soul Bowl as Groove City though. You live & learn!

Ian,

Sorry to break the news...Mel's gone. Something about an innocent remark that offended folks. It's a shame. He was a cool guy. It's partially my fault. For some reason I'd thought he was a girl (Mel, as in Melanie). I wrote my Uncle that "A gal named Mel in the UK digs your song"!
My uncle wrote this thing for Spyder Turner and I wanted to lift his spirits that his early Motown work is alive and well.

Anyhow, Mel wrote saying he's not gay (but you used a diff. expression). That sparked a *thing* and now he's flown away. I feel bad...I caused the whole thing because of a ASSumption.

Larry,
You have nothing to feel guilty for. It was just a misunderstanding. It was not your fault. Maybe the thing is capable of healing itself over a little time. I certainly hope so.

Guys and Gals

(its been a while)

I've got, from what I've read here (god bless you all for imparting your knowledge on a fledgling soulie) a very dodgy version of Scotts on Swingers. i got it off a mate in bathgate, and its the same label, but RED paper, not white. Does this mean its not "valuable". To be honest, even if its not valued by collectors I wouldn't be bothered because its fantastic (its whats in the groove etc), but I'd be interested to know! Its always great to spin it up in Scotland, particularly to the scooter riding fraternity who all expect the "stop her.." version. I laughingly say that its for all the scottish soulies. Scots on Swingers!
PS. David, heard you on radio Magnetic....Some great selections! (The hesitations......yowser! what a tune!)

To anyone out and about over the border in the next few days, Edwin will be playing with the team at the opening of a new pub in Glasgow tomorrow night. I have managed to persuade David that the best Geordie Alopeciaea (sp) cure is several pints and then Edwin doing what he does best....hopefully he'll have the goodness in his heart to sing Scots on Swingers to raise the spirits of our founder member! (Needless to say, Carl, I shall be wearing voluminous Spencers to mark the occasion!)

Have a great time Ade - Don't forget to iron the togs before you go. If you get chance to speak to him, mention the forum, I am sure he has heard of it already!

Ade(is this Mr Croasedale)?
if so a pleasure talking to you.
Just to add to Carl's piece, that if you do talk to Edwin Starr, any chance of him coming on the forum.
I Have seen him live 5 times and always without doubt the ultimate professional.
I Even got his autograph and a handshake at an all-nighter around 1974.

ADE,
Whatever you do, get David to that show. This is just what he needs. The pints are a bonus.

Dave F.. Thanks for the feedback. I had a feeling it was a gammy one, but thats fine.

Mel(andthensome). I'm (as I keep telling the lasses) Mr Wright, Not Mr Croasdell.

Carl D. Its a slim chance, but, you're not going home for the hols are you? If so, you might want to pop across to Keele University on Saturday night for the niter. Wahey! Geordies in baggy pants!
