Sue,

My brain has been in overdrive from time to time (see above,) but I have found myself focusing more and more on you.

I don't use the "Breakfast of Champions," but I like some Becks, now and again.

I loved SITSOM. It was a profound, life altering experience for me.

I worked for Motown for 12 years. I was there every day at the time that all those black and white (no pun intended) pictures (used in the film) were taken.

Until I saw SITSOM, I had no idea what was going on in the Snake Pit. I was living in my own dream world.

Time and again, in color, Fred Sanford would appear on the big screen. I didn't recognise him. Then it would dissolve to an old black and white photo or video/movie of the early 60's when I was right there in the very thick of it.

Fred Sanford would be transformed into Johnny Griffith, Robert White, Earl Van Dike, Eddie Bongo, and Bob Babbitt would become my old pal James Jamerson.

I will never forget the night that my first wife, Karen, and I went over to Benny Benjamin's house to pick up some "boo."

Benny acted like having us as guests was as if he was entertaining the Queen of England (by the way: the queen in power at that time is still in power now) and we both were very greatful.

I wish I could say thankful. At the time we were greatful for his help in scoring a bag. All we really wanted was to show up, pay for and get, the lid, and split.

Benny would no part of it. He had a very beautiful wife, who was utterly attentive and adoring to him. At his request, she cooked up a fantastic order of fried smelts. I was but a callow youth, and typically, I was not interested in food that was not like the food that Mom had prepared that I liked.

I can still picture that moment, as I looked into Bennys eyes, her eyes, and my wife's eyes, and raced my mind to find the solution.

The very idea that I would debate such a situation is unthinkable today.

This was before I did the stereo mix of the "Twisting Kings" album. Now known as the Funk Bros. album!

I have an acetate. To die for, if you are a Funk Brothers fan.

All these years I have loved this acetate.

Now I know why: The funks, under Benny, locked on a groove (established an accurate metronome rate of rhythm) and, because they had such a rapport, which gave each musician a high degree of confidence that "anything goes," they gradually developed a mutual pattern of serving the purpose of being happy, as they each, in turn, expressed their professionalism at being a great musician, based on their experience in Detroit black night clubs, Motown, Etc.

These wonderful works of art would have never come to be if the old South had said: Piss on our beautiful plantation houses I am going to cancel my order with the slave ship, and move to Detroit, Michigan, (Detroit existed as a French trading post long before the first slave was unloaded in the old South) and run for Mayor.

My great grandfather, John Patton, was the Mayor of Detroit in 1858! I am sure that he was a typical Yankee. That meant that he was dead set aganst slavery, and supported the current President Lincoln. Two years later, the civil war broke out.

Suppose that people like my great grandfather had gotten the upper hand from the time of the signing of the Declaration Of Independence, eighty years before. Those slave traders would have been crushed, and you could kiss your Funk Brothers groove goodby!

Thank goodness that my family was preoccupied with classical music. I got my love from my Father, who got it from his Mother, who got it from that Yankee Mayor, her Father, John Patton.

You fans can't win. If the mayor had ignored her education in the musical classics, he would have had time to stop the importing of slaves in the south. Poof. No Motown. Poof. No passionate postings about classical music on the forum which does not exist, because his daughter would not have learned to love Brahms.

Suppose that the Cooleys that built the railroad west of the Rockies had walked off the job and walked down to the southern Atlantic coast and stopped the slave ships. Poof! No Motown.

Suppose that my Dad had worn a condum. Poof! He would have had a big balloon around his balls because I would have never allowed him to prevent me from seeing STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN!

Love you Sue,

Mike McLean

Count if you didn,t hear your phone ringing last night,it's because I forgot that we were having people over today and had to get the house squared away. So what am I doing now? Sitting at the computer instead policeing the area and taking care of the rest of the things that have to be done.Oh well I'll just have a sip of the breakfast of champions and get the glow started early.
Have a nice Thanksgiving!!

HEY LYNN,I wondered what happened to you last night.I kept telling my cook,I bet thats LYNN not calling,so when the phone was not ringing I kept checking caller ID,I said to my daughter, quick, dont answer it,it's LYNN not calling.Well this is supposed to be music only,as you can see whats been happening here,so i'll get to what I was doing last nite while waiting to hear from you.I've tried to gather some advice here from some well educated and knowledgable folks and master techs here, but been ignored. So why I decited to go into my boxes of JUKE BOX singles of eps, i dont know.I thought why even bother anyone here for what to do,I could be up all night waiting for a respond.Anyhow, these so called,RACK-JOBBERS,45eps,were only getting in the way of the mostly doo-wop collection which is many,as you seen when you were here.Agood friend of mine,Jerry Stills came across these who was a record distributor, and said to put them in my juke box, which I never did, these have 6ix tracks,3hree per side and have some pretty good color picture sleeves, which I'll keep, but as far as the records go,there are about 34 of them,so in the trash they go.Have you ever heard of "CHISA" lables?oh well, thats life on the forum, this might upset some record collectors, but I dont have time to contack the collectors,as I've been ripped before from them on selling a few times and finding out the record was worth many many dollars more.I was only trying to be a nice guy to those who needed them for their obscure collection,as I tried to be as nice as I could be here, with the hopes of helping someone out,but when your questions are ignored, what can you do?This is thanksgiving and I should be thankful for what I have, and I am,but some things just have to go.Lets get together soon,I'am holding 2wo tickets for your daughter for the dance, call me I'll be home all day.HEY,I thought you were retired, but I see you have a job standing in front of the sperm bank telling people, thanks for cuming.Talk to you soon(hey vato) Love,"COUNT".ps.HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you and your famaily, and to all here on the forum.

Count,

Have you thought of auctioning them on e-bay ?

I haven't tried selling anything myself yet
but I do know friends who have.

Check out the "seller" section at www.ebay.com

Chisa - the label was run by Hugh Masekela and
his partner Stewart Levine. The label started out
as a production company becoming a full fledged label around '67. Motown were their distributors
in the mid-seventies. Most of their releases
tend towards jazz more than soul, the Crusaders
for a start. The main thing with e-bay is to
label the stuff properly so that you reach the people who are interested.

Count, We had a great time a the Doo-Wop Christmas Dance/Party. Man,you guys in the car clubs purple shirts with the white collars and cuffs with white skinny ties were so sharp it like to cut my eyes.

The Fabulous Oldies band were just that. The lead singer sounded like Jimmy Beaumont of the Skyliners and just about every other singer that he did.

When I got up to sit in with them ,they showed me the list of songs for the set and asked which ones I knew, I just said all of them, just count it off and let me know when you want to end.
It was such a pleasure to have Dave Kovarick, and George Katsakis up there on stage with the bands sax man, what a horn section.

Speaking of George, in Oct. he had open heart surg. and here he is, just a wailin like he's been doing for all these years. It was an honor to be on stage with him.

Dave Kovarick ,you'd better stop practicing as I think your starting to scare a lot of sax players around Detroit who thought they were bad-ass sax players.

Some of the people I saw last night were Lee Allen, Johnny Ginger, Dennis Coffey,Millie, Sue, George Young,Pam Kovarick, and to many more for me to name.

After we left the party(near the end) Dave said why don't we stop in at Jamie Coes club and say hello to him. When we got there it was jammed packed tighter them a fat lady in spandex. Standing room only, but it was nice to say hello to Jamie again.

My daughter Kim and her husband Jim came up from Florida to come to the party and had great time (I think they were laughing at my smooth moves on my wife Sandy on the dance floor)." Eat your hearts out children.

Again Count, you ,Barb and your club know how to throw a great party.THANKS
Let get together so we can Salud and Slainte Va each other a few times before Christmas.

"KONTINENTALS THE DOO-WOP KRUISERS"
We want to express our thanks to you LYNN,great on the tubs,GEORGE "THE KAT",a great horn man,he was probably playing durring his by passes and while in surgery, his performance showed he never left that horn for a minute.DAVID KOVARICK,holy sax shit, what more can we ask for, another cream of the crop horn man,and with the horn player from the group,a great horn section indeed was formed."DENNIS COFFEY",thank you so much for making a a fabulous band a bit more fabulous,I only wish you could of stayed a little longer and performed again, for the band was asking for your presence again after I talked to them, and I sat in on drums on "RUNAWAY",and told the band we needed "MR.COFFEY" to open the song with the guitar licks,as DENNIS was also a very big part of "DEL SHANNONS" CAREER,We totaly understand
DENNIS,and just one song from your guitar playing, makes the nite complete.Again, thank you DENNIS,and am so sorry you had to leave.MILLIE and that DETROIT GAL,SUE,looking as pretty as ever, thank you for being there and was so good to feel the glow in the room when you arrived, much love to both of you,and from all the KONTINENTALS,
thank you,LEE ALAN,JOHNNY GINGER,GEORGE THE "KAT",DENNIS COFFEY,DAVE(blow man blow)KOVARICK,GEORGE YOUNG,(great ELVIS show GEORGE,that poor girl had to go home panty-less),
RON MORRIS,from the original "LARADOS".My only dissapointment was JAMIE COE,the broken promise man,so many fans were also dissapointed with him not showing. Also the hardest working man in show business,GIL BRIDGES,he got a booking in CHILIE,
a few weeks before our gig and had to leave,so many fans asking where is GIL from RARE EARTH?
but they all understood the nature of show business, man could you just imagine the horn section with GIL,and the rest?COME HOME SAFE GIL.
LYNN and SANDY,what a beautiful daughter you have,
so glad they could make the gig comming all the way from FLORIDA,thank you KIM and JIM.
Thanx to all,and have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a "KOOL YULE". "COUNT".

DEAREST LYNNE,
HOW GREAT IT WAS TO SEE AND HEAR YOU PLAY AGAIN. YOUR RIGHT IT WAS A CLASSIC NIGHT AND YOU HAVE NOT LOST ONE THING. YOUR A CLASSY MAN WHO PLAYS SOME CLASSIC DRUMS. IT WAS SO NICE TO MEET YOUR DAUGHTER, WHAT A CUTIE. JUST LIKE YOUR WIFE. AS I SAID WE MUST MAKE IT A POINT TO GET TOGETHER WHILE DAVE IS OFF.
THANKS LYNN FOR THE WONDERFUL COMPLIMENT ABOUT DAVES PLAYING ABILITIES. IT MEANS A LOT TO HIM. YOUR OPINION THAT IS. IT ALWAYS DID. IT WAS SO GREAT TO HEAR MY LITTLE GREEK BOY ALL WOUND UP. HE IS THE BEST. NOT COUNTING DAVE THAT IS. BUT I AM PREDJUDICE A LITTLE. GEORGE ALWAYS COULD KICK A LOT OF BUTTS ON THAT THING AND A LITTLE THING LIKE OPEN HEART NEVER STOPPED A GOOD GREEK HORN MAN. HE IS MY MAIN SQUEEZE. I WAS WORRIED ABOUT HIM ALL NIGHT BUT HE DID GREAT AS USUAL.
AS FAR AS JAMIE IS CONCERNED, I SPOKE WITH HIM WHEN WE WENT UP THERE AND HE HONESTLY SAID HE WAS TO TIRED TO COME UP. GOOD ANSWER, HE DOES WORK HIS BUTT OFF STILL. HE CONVINCED DAVE TO BRING HIS HORN IN AND DAVE SAT IN FOR A SET. TALK ABOUT BEING COMFORTABLE. THAT IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE DAVE QUIT PLAYING THAT HE ACTUALLY GRABBED HIS AX AND JUMPED RIGHT ON THE STAGE. GEORGE GOT A LITTLE SENTIMENTAL AND WAS VERY EMOTIONAL. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THOSE TWO TOGETHER ON STAGE AGAIN. I THINK GEORGE THINKS DAVE IS ONE OF HIS CHILDREN. LOL.I TOLD HIM THAT AND HE SAID WELL HE IS. I JUST LAUGHED BECAUSE DAVE IS ALMOST JAMIE'S AGE. HE IS VERY PROUD OF ALL HIS GUYS.THANKS TO THE COUNT VERY MANY PEOPLE HAD A GREAT TIME THAT NIGHT. I WAS SORRY DENNIS AND MILLIE HAD TO LEAVE ALSO. WELL MAYBE YOU CAN ALL JAM ANOTHER TIME. DAVE SAID THE COUNT REALLY DID AN EXCELLENT JOB.SO FUN WAS HAD BY ALL.

I wish we could have let the sax & drummer enjoy a paid night off so we could have played together the rest of the night. I thought every band in the world knew "Hand Clappin by Red Prysock. I guess we,re showing what era we,re from. The people missed a treat hearing you blow that song.

Pam, I can see why you guys have been together so long. Not only are you pretty, but your a lot of fun and have a great sense of humor.

Dave, When I get that big picture of us playing in Washington,D.C. fixed up, I,ll call you.It shouldn,t be too many more days.

Count,

Completely understandable about company during the holidays. No problem. That kind of stuff happens when your a popular guy! Had a great time at the Clawson. Met George and Gil. Not only were they great players, but great people also! The Kats tone is Right On The Money and Gil is So Smooth. Dennis Coffey was there and sat in....Burnin As Usual. I'm glad I got the chance to meet him. My wife sat in for a tune and had a great time. I only wish there would have been a kit there. Yes, I definitely will be up again. Maybe we can schedule up. I look forward to meeting you and Lynn. I'd love to hear you guys play. I've had the pleasure of playing with some great players on both the national and underground levels. I grew up in the Motor City and was fortunate in being influenced by some the of greatest players as this site mentions. I could not have asked for a more solid musical foundation than what this town has offered. I really appreciate your asking me about my playing, but I don't want to inconvience the thread with my bio. We can talk when we meet. I'm still smiling from your "Marbles In The Snare Drum Tactics". That could have saved me a lot of grief!

Horse,
You would not be inconveniencing this forum by telling us a little about yourself. We would be interested.

Ralph,

I appreciate your comment. I'm a drummer/vocalist who grew up around Detroit during the early 60'& 70s'. Who could ask for a better era in music. Detroit was making musical history as you know. Yourself, along with others on this forum were all part of it. I played around town with club acts during the early to mid 70s. I spent about seven years on between the Boston/Berkley jazz scene and L.A. I relocated to L.A. in 88 and returned to Detroit in 95. I've been fortunate in playing with Denise Williams, Kirk Whalum, Jimmy Earl, Freddie Washington, Jeff Lorber, Louis Johnson. Orthea Barnes, Norma Jean Bell among others and yes, I was one of Normas' "All Stars":) Not all of those situations with the individuals as artist, but different playing situations And I thouroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I'm still active and pursuing the musical venture and enjoying this site! So I guess that's about it. Ok Ralph, I spilled the beans. It's not always the easiest thing talking about ones' self...even though my wife probably hears it all day long!

Thanks Horse. I figured you had a " history " in the business. I've learned from experience that it is the guys that are really good that don't talk about it all that much. I had you figured right pal. Thanks for the bio. You've been a welcome addition to this forum.

Ralph,

Thanks for the kind words. But Thank You even more for providing the oportunity to share with this forum. At a time when the industry so intensely attempts to dictate what we music lovers (for lack of a better word) will be enjoying, this forum has given ALL of us the much needed release. It has gifted us with the luxuriuos opportunity of communication through educating, learning and sharing, not only our lifes experiences, but dreams. This is a place where regardless of lifes achievements, race or creed, we are all equal, and made That, through our love of one common thing...Music! Thank you to all involved in this forum.

Horse, sorry we couldn,t meet at the Clawson sat. as I wanted to be there to welcome George back. I fell bad about that. Maybe we can all plan a day in the future we could meet there. One tip: you never tell them your there to hear the band and have a drink or they shuttle you to the back of the bar with no view,if it,s dinner time.In the future it,s "yes, of course,we,re having dinner". Maybe you can get Nabay to join us all. Have a Merry Christmas

Lynn,

I'm looking forward to it. Throw us (me & Count)some tenative dates for some time after the new year. Actually, we ended up with a pretty good table. Probably because we had dinner. And it was quite fine might I add. I spoke briefly with Nabay last night. I had mentioned meeting George, Gil and Dennis, and also the possibility of meeting youself and Count. I will be talking to him tonight. He was very excited about it. I would love to have Nabay come up to the Clawson, but he's currently living out in the L.A. area. The next time he's in town I'll make sure you guys hook up. How can I reach you offline. Post here. Happy Holidays

Hey HORSE,glad you liked my marbles in the snare drum.I'am thinking of doing it with my new set,the bottom skin must be plastic and really tight and a 6inch wide strainer across the skin, top head is CALF SKIN.I hated plastic skins back then and still do today as far as top skins go.I dont know about you,but I sometimes had trouble doing a perfect rim shot when it would count most in a drum break or doing WALK DONT RUN.Here is another thing I came up with in 1962.I went to ROUGE HOBBY shop and got a piece of 7inch long by 3/4inch thick BALSA wood and gluded it, on the left side of the snare skin with good ol ELMERS glue and tight against the chrome hoop, when struck with hickory 1a slingerland sticks a great rim shot or shots was heard and felt.Latter I went with a kar door edge protector and ran it all around the chrome hoop, this was the way of making a even higher hoop for those rim shots.Man,the shit we could come up with. The only other thing I wish they had back then was the battery operated (WOMENS) viboraters they have today, that hiddin in the snare on a plastic bottom skin, wow, eat your heart out "SANDY NELSON"
