One of my all time favourite Detroit sounds of all time is the masterful track called Thats Alright by Ed. Crook on the Tri star Label.Does anybody know anything about Mr.Crook and if so what he is doing these days.If anyone has heard the record can they tell me what instrument it is about a half a way through,Which sounds like a harp or is it a guitar being plucked in a certain way?Again I first heard this around 1972(a golden year for me in Rare/Northern Soul)And when I get my copy out to play these days,it still sounds the buisness, with thanks.MEL.

Hi Mel. I agree that the Ed Crook record is incredible. I once had a conversation with Major Reynolds (who owned Tri-Sound) about Ed Crook, and he had some fascinating things to say--most of which, unfortunately, might not be appropriate to repeat in a public forum. He did say that Ernie Durham had Ed perform free at the 20 Grand in exchange for radio play of the record--no doubt a pretty standard give-and-take at the time. E-mail me at jmoorehous@aol.com if you'd like more info.

Ed Crook came out on two different label designs on Tri-Sound...the plain yellow, and one with two black lines crossing the label from 10 to 4, and 2 to 8, if you know what I mean.
The instrument in the break is a violin played "pizzicato"...plucking with the fingers instead of using a bow, as you guessed.
Incidentally, the wonderful Devotions disc on the same label aslo came out on two label variations...plain yellow, and an earlier gold label with black print.

I believe Ed Crook came and went back to Chicago.

Mel,

Played the Ed Crook record to see what you meant

I don't think it's a guitar - it sounds like
someone plucking the strings of a violin or some
other string instrument miked very close.

Perhaps one of the musician members of the forum
can say for definite.

Great record anyway !
