The Scenario: I have this young waitress (20) under my musical wing in my community...she appears to have an 'old - soul', and is always asking me questions in regard to classic soul and R&B music and the like. She is of Hispanic heritage and very urban in her approach, being born in NY. I state this part because she is first generation born in this country from her family and her parents played their music mostly, but she is familiar with 'The Motown Sound', her parents did listen to 'Miguel Jackson' and his 'hermanos'...lol.... any one who knows me knows I was on the floor after that statement... Well this young ladies name is Maria. I told her 'Miguel Jackson' has a song called 'Maria'. She said 'Really?!' My Dad never played that one, I dont think'. So I brought the cd to the restaurant and let her listen to it...and it was 'instant love'. 'Oh my God!, listen to Michael when he was young!' You have to make me a copy!' Well, come to find out, she wanted to collect any song that has the name Maria in it, so Im on a search for Maria songs, SDF, before I burn a solid copy. I gave her the MJ version so she can play it for Madre and Padre, but while serving my food today she already had one verse locked down. LOL. I gave her the cd this morning. Second part of the story: During our conversation tonight, she said 'DyvaNaye, you know music, so I heard this song on tv from the Body and Soul collection called Woman to Woman by Shirley Brown and I love that song! I got to get it cause she was telling that other woman off!' I told her tha song is in a line of several "call and response songs' that are out there, and I began to name few like Runaway Love, Papers, In The Rain (Oran Jones), Go Away Little Boy, etc...and she said 'Oh PLEEEEEEASE hook me up! Ive never heard these and I want to start a music collection like that, good soul music and stuff!' Well SDF, you see my plight. A young starving mind for good music. How can I refuse? She said she hates the music of today because there is no fun in it, and no real music form what her parents played for her. Well Im gonna keep her exposed...so... SDF: Help me with some 'Telling It like it is Songs' I have not listed. I want to give it to her by this weekend if I can, because she said she is going to a party and want to play it for her friends. This is going to be a fun project for me. I grateful she wants to be exposed to 'real-music'. Peace, DyvaNaye |

Maria: "Message From Maria" by Joe Simon (or, even better, The Persuasions) Hope I understand this "Telling It Like It Is" concept: "Let's Straighten It Out" Latimore "Be For Real" Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes "Be Thankful For What You Got" William de Vaughn "It Ain't No Fun" Shirley Brown (what a record!)

Hi there DyvaNaye. Those "soap opera" songs seem to suggest lots of early/mid '70s music .. so .. You would have to follow up "Woman to Woman" with "From His Woman To You" by BARBARA MASON, and then some MILLIE JACKSON .. "Leftovers" perhaps? How about "Mr Big Stuff" from JEAN KNIGHT, followed by "Run and Tell That" by DENISE LASALLE. And to add to 1wicked's suggestion of JOHNNIE TAYLOR's "Jody" songs how about his "Cheaper to Keep Her" and then "Jealous Man" by JOHN EDWARDS. Then there is BETTY WRIGHT .. "Clean Up Woman"/"Babysitter"/"Tonights the Night"/"Is it You Girl". Hope these suggestions give you some ideas. Roger |

Yes these songs are helpful...I should have made clear i am intersted inthe songs that do the 'talk-rap' break parts. I dont want to scare her off just yet...because of her age and the evolution of 'rap' in a song the 'telling some one off' concept would be acceptable music to the life that she understands NY to be, in her way, musically. The 'Lets Straighten It Out' type of music is all singing and music, while we seasoned folk under the concept, it would lose her attention right now. But thanks all of you, keep on writing if you know more Millie Jackson and Linda Clifford type stuff. So far so good. I will see her the AM and I know she will come up with something else. LOL. Peace, DyvaNaye |

Hi DyvaNaye, This doesn't exactly fit in with what your friend wants, but if neither of you has heard "Maria, Maria" on the Santana album, "Supernatural," you have a treat in store! Chances are Maria already knows about it, but I couldn't resist; it's such a great, upbeat song. BobF (Message edited by notsocool66 on June 02, 2004) |

Hmmm DyvaNaye. "Talk-Rap" real soul stuff with attitude eh. Heres a few more thoughts .. "Natural Man" by LOU RAWLS .. Nice talk intro .. and those lyrics that start "I Don't Want No Gold Watch Working Fourty Years From Nine Till Five, Whilst The Boss Is Guzzling Champagne and I'm Swilling Beer in Some Dive" .. should do the trick. or .. "Its Cool" by THE TYMES .. Nice bit of "bitching" going on in the middle of that one. or .. "Masterpiece" by THE TEMPTATIONS .. sometimes I think that that was the first real "Rap" record in its post "Rappers Delight" sense. .. "Money, ain't got none, job can't find one" .. Shall try to come up with a few more suggestions .. Roger |
