Hi this is Kev-Lo You know Arlester (Dyke) Christian was born In Buffalo,New York In 1943 although Dyke and the group are often said to be from Phoenix Arizona. He spent time as a youngster in nearby Niagara Falls,N.Y. by the early 60's,Dyke was into music and began spending time with Carl LaRue and his crew,a Buffalo soul outfit that played local clubs. In 1964 LaRue and his group moved to Phoenix at the behest of Eddie O'Jay,a former disc jockey in Buffalo and later cleveland. While in Cleveland, he began working with a yuong group he called the O'Jays. It was that group that DJ OJay wanted LaRue and his guys to work with.Ayear later the band fell apart and some of them returned to Buffalo. In 1966 DDyke got a chance to record at Audio Recorders the session included Dyke on vocals and bass,Alvester Pig Jacobs on guitar,Bernard William and J.V. Hunt on saxophones,Rodney Brownon drums and Richard Cason on organ.Dyke and the Blazers reportedly took an hour to record Funky Broadway which would be divided into two parts Funky Brodway slid into the rhythm and blues charts in February 1967 it peaked in the top 20 and was on the hit list for 24 weeks Meanwhile,Dyke continued to write for himself in the spring of 1968 he was back in the r&b top 30 with Funky Walk Pt 1 it was followed with We Got More Soul,a top 10 r&b hit that went to the top 40 pop then came Let A Woman Be A Woman-Let A Man Be A Man a top 5 r&b smash in the fall of 1969. in early 1970 Dyke had one of his more unusual hits he re-did the old pop classic You Are My Sunshine in the early 70's Dyke was still writing songs and talking to producers but he never got a chance to go back to the studio. He was shot in a street confrontation in front of a Phoenix tavern on March 30,1971 Dyke was only 28 when he died.He lelf a legacy of hard-edged funk that still britle with power and drive. He was definitely one of the funkiest soul pioneers in the 60's,let's give props to this grat soul legend
