ITS AN EVENING OF FABULOUSNESS!
Nathaniel Mayer Goes Deep Into The East Side On Friday

A low cover charge, cheap beer, and a night with Nathaniel Mayer what more could any Detroit music fanatic or clubgoer ask for? Thats right, Detroit R&B legend and Fat Possum recording artist Nathaniel Nay Dog Mayer will perform Friday, June 4, at the Village Idiot, 15421 Mack Ave., Detroit (across Mack from Grosse Pointe Park, east of Alter Road). The nights entertainment features Dan The Crawdaddys fabulous new group, the Boomerangs, as the opener. The door opens at 8 p.m. and the cover charge is $7.

A shoutin, shakin, force of nature onstage, Mayer is renowned for his energetic, flamboyant performances. Mayers backing band is the Fabulous Shanks. They achieve a raw, supercharged sound with blues and R&B overtones that are unmistakably Detroit. The bands twin-guitar attack comes from Jeff Meier, a founding member of the Detroit Cobras and mainstay of Rocket 455; and Dale Beavers, who has played and recorded with rockabilly hero Dale Hawkins.

The kinetic, electric Mayer appropriately called Detroits Baddest is best known for his high-octane 1962 smash, Village Of Love, recorded for Detroits almost-mythic Fortune Records with his first group, the Fabulous Twilights. Village was Fortunes biggest record ever reaching #8 on the WABC New York survey, #6 in Los Angeles on KRLA, and #2 on the WLS Chicago survey.

Mayers follow-up to Village was the gritty workout, Leave Me Alone. Then, I Had A Dream just bubbled under the national Hot 100 in late 1963, and Mayer was a funk innovator with his underground hit, I Want Love And Affection (Not The House Of Correction) in 1966. The songs memorable refrain, I cant stay no more, in DeHoCo, was a reference to the infamous, now-extinct, Detroit House of Correction.

Mayers CD on the Fat Possum label will be out this summer, with all-new material. He is sure to perform both new and old songs at the show.

Mayer was born in Detroit and grew up on the east side, attending Eastern High School. Early influences included Hank Ballard & the Midnighters and Marv Johnson, and he was later intrigued by the rhythms and energy of James Brown. Nay Dog has seen his music influence many of todays up-and-coming garage-rock/punk/soul acts, particularly Detroit-based artists.

Be prepared to be knocked on your ass! None of these hot-shit 20-year-old "music" heroes of today can keep up with Nate.
Dale Beavers, by the way, played the tasty slide guitar on one of my all-time favorite songs, the Gram Parsons-inspired "Don't Come Looking for Me Now" by the Compulsive Gamblers.
This is not a show to be missed! I mean that with all my heart and soul!
