Who were her producers and writers at Motown? What do her songs sound like? I'm also curious to know what Franki Valli and Jerry Butler sounded like at Motown. I wasn't all that impressed by what Major Lance did for them. I'm a big fan of Lesley Gore's work for Mercury through 1965. I didn't like her last few Mercurys. She had trained her voice well, and knew what to do with it. She put a lot of emotion into her singing. |

Yes I agree Rob. And I think Its My Party did hit R and B. To this day Quincy Jones speaks very highly of her(I guess most know she was his protege and I think his first #1). I forget name of her Motown album and singles but I will try to look up. Ive heard it was quite good. I believe she co-wrote most of it. |

"Someplace Else Now" - MoWest #117, 1972 - Cover by: Jim Britt, 1972 Funny I was just thinking about Lesley Gore this morning. I really dug all the stuff that Quincy Jones produced on her. The MoWest LP was ok but it wasn't one of my favorites. I guess this means I better play some Lesley today; its been a while. Ok it's time to confess that I had a big crush on her as a kid.

Nice cover Robb_K, I didn't get the chance to hear all of Jerry Butler's Motown output, but I did hear "Suite For The Single Girl". I did a review for it a while back at the All Music Guide. It's a tasteful album, the ballads like the title, "Music In Her Dreams" and "Only Pretty Girls" are all a little sad, poignant but very well produced. The dance tracks "Chalk It Up" and "Ms Fine" are a little clunky-though not disco. Frankly it's hard to describe, I don't have another album in my collection like it. The album was recorded in Chicago with tracks produced by Homer Talbert and Paul Wilson. The big hit on that one was "I Wanna Do It To You." (Message edited by zebop on May 31, 2004) |

Hey Jimmy, as I recall it's more pop than soul, not at all Motown sounding. I haven't played it in many years so I need to give it another listen. |

Hey Moe!! Yes, It's My Party charted R&B in May '63 (HEY, THAT RHYMED!!!). It was #1 for 3 weeks & remained on the R&B charts for 11 weeks. I was 3 when that song came out & I loved it. I wouldn't call it soul in the classic sense. I will say that she put her soul into the song. Some may criticize it for being lightweight with corny lyrics. To me, it was simply a good song. Much more Pop than Motown & Q had his finger on the Pop pulse with that song. I also liked You Don't Own Me. Also loved California Nights, which will always remind me of those days of Winter '66-'67, when I was a carefree 1st grader. Ahhh youth!! The days when you just liked what you liked with no regard for genre & charts. Damn, the 60s were kinda fun!

I liked "Just Let Me Cry", "Run, Bobby, Run", "She's A Fool", "You Don't Own Me", and "I Don't Wanna Be A Loser", as semi-soul sounds. I liked her remake of The Cookies'"The Old Crowd", "Maybe I Know" "That's The Way Boys Are", "Look of Love" and "Wonder Boy" as the classic Girls Group sound. The latter are right up there with some of the best Philles-Dimension style cuts. Quincy and Leslie both did great jobs. She had very few "duds" until her late Mercury period, when she was concentrating on College, and didn't put her whole heart into her singing. I'm not sure why the material became significantly weaker (at least in my opinion). |

Quincy Jones produced a stellar recording for Lesley Gore on the A&M label entitled "Love Me By Name" which came out in 1976. The cast of musicians who assisted on the project read like a who's-who of the music industry: The Brothers Johnson, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Harvey Mason, Brenda Russell, Tom Scott, Herbie Hancock, and so on. The serious jam from this album was "Sometimes" which featured Lesley Gore with The Brothers Johnson and that was just the tip of the iceberg. This excellent album went absolutely nowhere. Radio would not touch it, and A&M Records literally threw it out there to fend for itself. If you ever come across a copy since it's long been out of print, then by all means pick it up, take it home, and enjoy it! It's that good... |

Maybe the Hip-o Select or Motown Select label will someday consider both Lesley's Mowest CD and "Love Me By Name" as a two-fer offering. I'd be among the first to buy it! (I think there has been buzz on the Motown Bulletin Board about it --not so much them actually releasing it, but interest in it). |

I was never a fan of Lesley Gores in the 60's...too "Pop" for my tastes, when her name would come up when I was hangin' with Mary Wells, Mary would state "that girl can sing"...then when the Legendary Ladies of Rock N Roll TV Special and tours in the 80's I found out yes, Lesley Gore COULD sing and was very good onstage. I have listened to and enjoyed some of her Mercury recordings.I would love to hear the A&M LP as my brothers knew the Brothers Johnsons back then and they talked about that project and spoke highly of her talent. |

Leslie Gore's "Love Me By Name" is a great song. Dusty Springfield's version from the 1978 LP (now on CD) "It Begins Again", is even more soulful than Leslie's.... In fact, it is one of Dusty's best performances ever! |

Is Love Me By Name soulful?Did Lesley write the material? She and especially her brother were involved in the music for Flashdance(I think Lesley co-wrote Out Here On My Own and I can just hear her singing it). Is Michael Gore still active in music? |

Love Me By Name was very soulful, a delicious blend of Pop & R&B with Jazz overtones since Quincy Jones was at the production helm. |
