My personal experience with Detroit's Casinos has been that music entertainment is an afterthought added to the marquis as a draw for gamblers. I first went to a Detroit Casino to EXPRESSLY to see one of my favorite local Soul/R&B acts. Upon finally locating the "stage" through the maze of slot machines and blackjack tables,I was distressed by the conditions they were playing in ! First of all, the stage was not in a dedicated room or lounge but a hole in the wall carved out behind a bar ! The feet of the musicians were at level with the liquor bottles. Secondly, the band could barely be heard over the cacophony of slot machines and gamblers. 99% of the people in the room could have cared less about the entertainment. I am NOT a gambler but an amateur musician who respects other players at all levels. There was no respect evident from either management or 99% of the patrons. I could not recommend this casino as a Music Entertainment destination after this experience. Has anyone had a positive music experience at a Detroit casino ? and if so, which one ? Leo B

Greektown Casino has a stage that is off to the side with a section where there are tables, like in a club setting. There is a rope around that area. Also, in the summer, at Greektown, they have a terrace which is not in the casino area where they have social affairs. They also have a separate room for more formal affairs. In the summer, MGM has concerts outside in the yard which is fenced in, and charges I think $10 for the concerts. They also have social affairs on the roof for special guest. But remember, the casino is not in the business of music. They strickly cater to gamblers. Sometimes a band is there, and no one is paying attention. :o) (Message edited by sis on May 31, 2004) |

I agree with you Sis, the Casinos' are not in the music busines, but the $gambling$ business. MotorCity has a line of great performers coming up in the next month. Gambling is the name of the game at any Casino. ...although I've seen some great well known performers at the Casinos'. |

I've only played one casino gig in Kentucky, and it was in a banquet hall, but if they pay me and don't screw with me, that's respect enough. I don't think I want to see the inside of a casino again if I don't have to though. |

Thanks Hitsville Chalky~ It's good to hear someone say something good about Detroit for a change...we never said we were 'Vegas' or competeing with 'Vegas'. In the near future, there will be large Hotels and Parking structures built on all three Detroit Casino. I think it will be very interesting,a nd will more likely draw more businesses in the city...meanwhile I believe it will be enjoyed by the citizens of Michigan and abroad. Thanks Again. |

Medusa, I do hope the Casino action helps draw more business into the city. The kind of small business that can support real live music. Unfortunately, considering their draw, it may have the opposite effect. I would never knock Detroit as a whole but I can knock the Casinos whose PRIMARY motive is $$$$$. It's that old story of Art vs. Commerce right ? Just look at all the cutting edge "culture" coming out of Las Vegas. I am glad that some folks can enjoy a night out at our Detroit Casinos. They are just too noisy for a particular listener such as myself. Leo B |

hahahaha, Leo B...I can understand that. Unfortunately, I just enjoy playing the games. One time I went to the Casino (can't remember which one), and I looked around, and here are all these parents and grandparents sitting/standing around playing all these games like a bunch of kids. I couldn't do anything but laugh, because I was one of those (grownup) kids myself...and for some reason, I love all the noise and the people and the games. I love it even better when I "WIN" |

medusa,I had to go for Wayne county jury duty recently and was'nt picked(thank God) so I walked over to Greek town for lunch.I had never been in the Greektown casino so I walked in before I went to the greek resturant. Those slot machines kept calling my name,so I sat down at one.I left a half hour later with enough money to pay for my meal,a bottle of retsina wine, and parking, plus gas money. A half-hour well spent!! |

Lynn Bruce - LOL, sorry about that neighbor. I should have warned you not to go to the beautiful Greektown Casino, unless Spyder Turner is performing there. Spyder will keep you entertained, and it won't cost you a dime. The next time, a concert is there, second floor "Apollo Stage" just park in the structure across the street, and get the ticket stamped for free parking. |

Sis,thanks for the info about parking for shows at greektown casino. What I meant about playing the slots there was--I did'nt lose a dime in that half hour.I WON enough to buy all that. You might say the casino payed me a free afternoon in greektown.lol Anything to shake off the bad vibes that the Wayne county court building gives off !!! |
