I JUST BOUGHT THIS DVD AND IT WAS A TRIBUTE TO RUFUS THOMAS. I SAW CARLA THOMAS AND THOUGHT SHE SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD NOW AS IN THE DAY. CAN YOU NAME A PERSON THAT SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD NOW, OR ONE THAT HAS LOST IT. |

I saw Miss Patti LaBelle performing her latest single 'New Day' on The Ellen Show earlier this week and the woman's still got it! She's taken excellent care of her voice and herself. Her singing is a bit more mellow but it's still fantastic and she looks better than she ever has! On the other hand, Aretha Franklin............... |

Aretha's voice is just not in good shape IMO. Her weight may have something to do with it. She even admitted it a few years back when her and her sister Erma (RIP) were on Oprah. |

ok, Rodman, again, we never know who's on this Forum, and it's not necessary to bring this up again...so don't go there regarding Aretha Franklin. I hope when she loses her weight, she doesn't get a face/nose job...it would change her sound...and I definately wouldn't want that to happen. I believe~ Aretha is intelligent enough not to mess up her good thing, her sound, her voice.

Medusa, please don't tell me what not to bring up and when to "go there regarding Aretha Franklin". Fayette asked a question and I answered it honestly and still managed to be very respectful of Miss Franklin at the same time. If you don't agree with me that's fine but there's no need for you to pretend that I was being rude when I obviously wasn't. The average Soul music fan is well aware that Miss Franklin has a weight problem right now so I'm sure that my previous post didn't offend them. IMO Miss Franklin hasn't been anywhere near the excellent vocal standards that she has set through the years, since the late 80's. Miss Franklin HERSELF went on Oprah a few years back and admitted that her voice doesn't sound good at her current weight and I'll have to agree with her. Medusa, I got my information straight from Miss Franklin! And for the record I love Aretha Franklin (and sister Erma too) as much as next guy. Check out the "I Never Loved A Man" and "Erma Franklin" threads! |

Rodman, the last thread (a while ago) we had about Aretha, it was awful/terrible, she was dragged through the mud...but since you weren;t on of the mud draggers, that's good to know. I don't have to pretend anything to U anyway and what you like or dislike, is your preference....theres' no way I can MAKE U do anything..it was mainly a suggestion. I don;'t know U, but it seems like you are a very young person... Now, don't U tell me to check out the "I've Never Loved A Man Thread" either. (LOL) |

Ok, Ok Medusa. That's fair enough. I can see how my comments would open up the floodgates for all of the people that dislike The Queen Of Soul for one reason or another. The reason I took offense to your post was because I thought you were suggesting that I was bashing Aretha. That wasn't my intention at all and I would never drag Miss Franklin's name through the mud on the forum or off. It just annoys me a little when people (not anyone in particular) pretend as if The Queen sounds just as excellent today as she ever has. I know it must be hard for her to live up to those late 60's/early 70's Atlantic years but today's Aretha can't even hold a candle to Aretha of the 80's/early 90's 'Jump To It', 'Who's Zoomin Who' and 'Honey' years IMO. If people are impressed with Aretha now then they would be floored if they heard how good she was in as late as 1989! And yes I could be considered a very young person compared to other forum members Medusa but I think that I handle myself very well (most of the time). I've been on my very best behavior since we switched over to the new forum! LOL.

I DON'T DISLIKE ARETHA BUT HER VOICE IS NOT AS STRONG TO ME AS IT USE TO BE.I DIDN'T MENTION THE WEIGHT BUT IT IS VERY APPARENT. I WOULD NEVER DISRESPECT ANYBODY BUT THAT WAS JUST AN OPINION. I DON'T THINK IT WAS OUT OF LINE. |

I know what you mean Fayette. Her last CD was a gift to me, and it doesn't sound as good as she used to...but I still like her music. Well that's good to hear Rodman, that you've been on your best behaviour, I hope it stays that way (smile)...No, I'm not insane, it's obvious she doesn't sound or look like she used to. (none of us stay exactly the same) Believe it or not, I started the ~Express Yourself~ thread for this very reason, but I guess we're all human. |

Aretha's diminishing voice may not have anything to do with her weight. Sometimes age just changes things. It happened to Sinatra and has happened to many of our once great singers. All we can do is continue to give them the love and respect they deserve even though they are no longer, vocally, what they once were. |

Medusa, I think that WE ALL should stay on our best behavior. I've seen forum members twice my age act like fools and make questionable comments here at the forum. There's been several topics and comments on this new forum that I've personally disagreed with but in order to keep the peace I simply didn't respond to them. I've also learned to give myself time to cool down before I respond to comments that make me angry. It's all a matter of respect. We won't all agree with each other all of the time but we definitely have to watch how we respond to each other when we disagree. No one wants the sort of bland forum where we all agree and try to gloss and sugarcoat everything but we just have to be careful. There should be a balance. It looks like almost everyone is in agreement that for whatever reason (age, weight, smoking, etc) Miss Franklin is not what she used to be vocally. Ralph, I totally agree that we should continue to support our favorite artists as they gracefully age. I think that Miss Franklin gets a little more flak then others because she set such high vocal standards and her peers like Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, etc have held up so well in the vocal department. But remember this, Aretha Franklin ON A BAD DAY is still 10 times better than an Ashanti, Britney, Brandy, Monica, Mya, etc at their best! Wonder B, I totally agree with you about Miss Bettye LaVette! She has lost absolutely nothing vocally over the years! NOTHING! I've got her live album "Let Me Down Easy: In Concert" that came out a few years back and I remember being shocked when I first heard how good she still is. Usually when you get these albums of classic Soul stars attempting to recreate their hits you get uninspired vocals and a cheesy keyboard and synth driven band. NOT THE CASE WITH THIS ALBUM! This band (including a real horn section) had it together and Miss LaVette can still blow! Man can she blow! |

Good morning everyone, I definitely agree S.S. regarding The Intruders. A few years ago I saw the "so-called" Intruders at The Beacon, on a bill with The Whispers & The Dells. The first problem that I had was that not ONE of them were there in those glory days. Unless Bobby Starr happened to be there, which I doubt. The main problem that I had is simply that they didn't sound good. I'm all for brothers trying to make a living, just not at the expense of my ear drums. Secondly, it was as though they misrepresented themselves. THEY WERE NOT The Intruders that I grew up listening to, not one of them. In summation, you can get 4 pieces of feces, put it in a ice-cream dish, covered with bananas & whipped cream & call it a ice cream sundae. That doesn't necessarily make it so. The sundae is still full of feces & so are all of these fake groups! |

I would say that Gladys Knight has a voice that has aged VERY well. She sounds just as good as she did in the 60s and 70s, if not better. I only heard him once on a recent PBS sepcial, but it seems as if Eddie Holman's pipes have aged well also. I've heard quite a few who I would say have lost it, but I'd rather not go there. |

Rodmann - It does not matter if your young, there are quite a few folk on SDF that are masking their age to be older and older to be younger, LOL! Just keep your knowledge in the right place with music, precious one, and you will score points with many a seasoned person. As for singers who still got it - Billy Paul, The Escorts, I wrote a thread about David Clayton Thomas, Peabo Bryson, Natalie Cole, Regina Bell Nancy Wilson, Dennis Edwards, Ollie Woodson, Gerald Alston, Phil Perry... more later, dinners ready. LOL. Peace, DyvaNaye |
