Most of family served in the military. My stepdad served in the army. My mom's sister served in the army. My stepbrother served in the army. I have a brother who's a marine and serving in Iraq right now. He's supposed to be coming home before Labor Day. Maybe even before that. He says that after he gets out of the marines, he says that he's transferring to the air force. That's where I'll be going, too. If I don't go to GSU.

Whoa! Now that's dedication. The same kind of dedication that I should be giving to my story lately. I guess I should be writing my story right about now.

A lot of WWII US, UK, Canadian, Polish (and for the first time German vets) are already in France for the 60ieth anniversary of D-Day. They are huge celebrations planned on that occasion together with the US forces.

Don't think there are many with us on SD here, but it is still nice to pay hommage to these guys who paid a dear price 60 years ago...

Very true Wonder B...and the price paid is immeasureable. Not all victims of war lost their lives or a limb. To witness the horrors of war can mean a lifetime of emotional difficulty...and the use of many legal and illegal substances to dull the memories AND the pain. Imagine going through 8-12 weeks of basic training...developing friendships...experiencing the camerarderie of those you have come to rely on...and then seeing your 'friend" the next AND last time...with a "toe tag", ready to be shipped home SOON after being sent to the front line. (Just like in The Naked City, there are 9 million tales....this is just one of them.)

War IS Hell !

They showed a ceremony (on the news tonight) which was held on the Normandy coast at a US cemetery with over 9400 tombs, and it was heart wrenching to see the few survivors there who had all been given a name (at random) of fellowmen who had died, and they were placing flowers on their tombs... back then most of these guys were kids between 18 and 24 years old...

War... what is it good for...?

Yes, these guys lost their lives so we could enjoy ours today...

They came over here to die in a foreign land and whatever you may hear or read on the US newspapers about the French (a lot of which is biased and just politicians's campaign tricks), be sure that each and everyone of them is forever grateful for those who risked their necks to come and free our country... someone had to do a dirty job and although they were not alone, the US paid the heaviest tribute to this madness...
