Hi All, In the SITSOM movie there is a clip of Marvin playing "What's Going On" live, and Jamerson is standing next to him playing bass. My question is, when is this concert from, and is the whole thing available?? I've never seen more than about 30 seconds at any one time. I'd love to see the whole thing. Also, I'm interested in knowing what Jamerson plays upright bass on. I know some of the songs but would like to hear more. I'm guessing a lot of early motown stuff?? There's also that track over the SITSOM credits, I'd love to hear the whole recording of that too. Last question - Is that James on Stevie wonder's harmonica album (Eivets Rednow - Alfie)?? It sounds like him to me. Thanks, Nick |

Hey Nick The SITSOM book says that JJ used his upright on sessions from about 1958/59 but by 1961 he had switched over to the Fender bass. However, the upright always remained his first love and he sometimes overdoubled his electric on top of the acoustic for extra punch. He could double his first line so closely that it was often difficult to tell there were two basses on the same cut. He would try to convince producers to use his acoustic bass for selected cuts such as Heatwave,A Place in the Sun,Baby Love and Can I get a witness. I am sure he is playing upright on My Guy (certainly on the end riff?) Hope that helps |

My understanding is that the footage where Jamerson is sitting next to Marvin playing What's Going On is from Jessie Jackson's Operation Push concert in Oakland Ca. from 1973 (I believe). Jamerson bass am (a big Fender possible bandmaster with a 2 15 cabinet) is right behind Marvin sitting at the piano. There is going to be far less of Jamerson playing the upright available on film because he played electric on all the live performances that I know about (Message edited by BassLand on May 29, 2004) |

Thanks for the comments guys.... Mike: that is definitely the upright on my guy, all the way through. And he's got such a fat sound on it!! Bassland: what are the other live performances you know about?? are they readily available?? I'd love to see more of the marvin one, i have seen a short clip of them play "what's happening brother" from what looks like the same concert. Do you have a list of the records on which he plays upright?? I know a few of them (my guy, heatwave etc) but I want to try and hunt down more. If it means I have to get all the early motown records, man I'll do it!!! Thanks, Nick |

Hey Nick, The Four Tops CD of the Lost & Found series which was recorded in 1963 but left in the can until the CD has Jamerson on upright for the entire album. I forget the actual name of the CD though. Together (the entire album) by Marvin Gaye/Mary Wells is all upright. "Once Upon A Time" was the hit & "Late Late Show" is pretty good too! I have the 2 for 1 Marvin Gaye (his first 2 albums). I know that "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" sounds like upright but I'm not sure about the rest of the album. I'll give it a listen for you tonight. |

Nick, I believe that footage was taken from the film SAVE THE CHILDREN. It was a concert filmed shot during the Push Expo of, I think, 1972. It has yet to make it to home video. |
