Onyx was from New York - owned by producer Jerry Winston. The Pearls were one of his groups - New Yorkers whose lineup included future solo singers Derek Martin and Howard Guyton. The Paragons were New Yorkers who recorded for Winley owned by Paul Winley. There's more than one Lake label - if you mean the one the Cashmeres recorded for it's from New York although there are later connections to Detroit. I'll list Detroit doowop groups later but there's probably a previous thread about this - check the archives for "Detroit doowop" Davie |

Does anyone know how many records Fortune pressed on an initial first run of a record, and which Fortune releases are condidered to be the "rarest"? |

Wasn't Phil Perry a singer with the Montclairs? I can't reach my books right now... LOL I love the man's voice and I have always wondered why he never had a greater solo career... I have his albums with Kevin Sanlin and some stuff he did with Dave Koz as well as his solo albums, but... Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! |

Eli, Ron Murphy probably knows a lot about those Fortune questions. But obviously, the bigger stars like Nolan Strong/Diablos, Andre Williams, Five Dollars, Nathaniel Mayer, etc., had bigger initial pressings, because Fortune was actively promoting them -- they were moneymakers for the label. Other pressings were "custom" -- in other words, the artists themselves would pay for the cost of a session and the pressing. I have heard that custom pressings were often only about 200 copies. Johnny Powers' record on Fortune was a custom, from what I understand. Fortune would also use whatever color label they had in stock at the time (or felt like using), so label colors aren't necessarily tied to era of issue (although blue was predominant, purple was used in the early days, and the pink with blue lettering was used circa '61-'63). I've seen maroon, purple, royal blue, pink, turquoise, light blue, black, yellow, white, red... you name it. |

I have a great 78 by the Five Emeralds, "Darling"/"Pleasure Me" (S.R.C. 107)from '54. S.R.C. was a label out of Ferndale, the town just to the north of Detroit on Woodward Ave., as well as the town that usually ends up hosting the SD45 Throwdowns. |

Lamont Dozier was a member of The Romeos. I also forgot to mention The Van Dellos, Tornados, Pharaohs, Mello-Tones. |

Robb, Thanks for the info. I absolutely love "Pleasure Me". How does the earlier single compare? BTW, a beat copy of the S.R.C.#107 45 just sold for $375 a few days ago on ebay. My 78 is in pretty decent shape but the 45s are much more in demand.

Brian T.: "I'll Beg" is a great Doo Wop group harmony song. The harmonies are fantastic. To me, it's the best group harmony doo-wop ballad to come out of Detroit. The flip side is the tipical "jump blues"semi-novelty, fast side. It must be nothing special, as I can't remember it. |

Hi Andy, Thanks for the correction on the Pearls - that'll teach me to make assumptions :-) Did they start in Detroit then move to New York ? As far as I can tell all of Derek Martin's solo records, except maybe for "Soul Power"/"Sly Girl" are NY recordings. Davie |

Kount - wow - great images! Thanx for posting them! What does the Hot Tamales sound like? Robb, or anyone....Re the Nite Sounds (Fortune), I assume some of the 45s have some vocals (???), but I bought one awhile back (I THINK it was "I Love You With Tender Passion/Cheese Cake") because it was FORTUNE, and was also listed in the Jeff Kreiter Vocal Group Guide, and it was all INSTRUMENTAL on both sides! (I bought it "blind" without hearing it first!) Needless to say, I was disappointed, and ended up re-selling it! *********************************************** And some other female groups that might be quasi doowop or transitional in style: Kittens (I Love You So) Taylor Tones (My Heart Went Zing) Satin Angels (Pity Me) Ruby & Her Swinging Rocks (I Cried A Tear Over You) Conquerors (Dutchess Conquers Duke) Clevers (Love Me Now) La Dolls (I'll Be Back) Corvells (He's So Fine) -- this is the female version of the Falcons hit! Sorry, I have no 45 rpm images to post on above! Anyone have these on 45? Would love to see the images Anyone???? *********************************************** Although not Detroit (close enuf?????) and a later vintage, thought I'd post these anyway, as they ARE good doo-wop! Nikki: At least one of those 45s by The Nite Sounds are vocals, as is The Melvin Davis and The Nite Sounds. Maybe The Nite Sounds were an instrumental group that just backed up Melvin Davis on those cuts? I have several of those Detroit Girls Groups' srecords you listed, but I won't be able to scan them until November. Count: Although it is true that The Hot Tamales on Detroit is, technically a "Detroit label"; apparantly, it is not from Detroit. We have discussed this in depth on one of the last threads on SD's Old Forum. I assume it is available in the Archives. It was called "Hot Tamales" or something similar. It seems that the label was in Boston, and the group came from Baltimore. |
