I'd pick Barney. Talentwise, it's a push, though I think Paula dances better! :-) :-)
Just Kidding!!!

I would pick a real pro. The best judge that A.I. ever had was Clive Davis. He could TRUTHFULLY analyze what was done right or wrong, whether the performance accurately captured the nuance of the lyric, etc. Clive didn't toss cream puffs. He broke the performance down & you can't fool this man. He's not swayed by audience response, he's swayed by competant performance. That's as it should be!

Simon: "That was an "Ok" performance, not your best...but ok..coming from me that's a compliment".

Randy: "Was alright...wasn't feeling ya...but it was just alright. You're still cool dawg...watch those notes he next time.."

Paula: "You're beautiful...just beautiful..you look really nice tonight.."

Simon is a record label exec, so he knows what the execs wnat..Randy is a muscian and producer..same goes for him..Paula????
They need another record exec in there. I agree Clive would be great.

Since they've already had Gladys and Donna, I'd pick Marilyn. I have no idea what type of judge she'd be. But I didn't find Gladys or Donna all that insightful.

I don't believe another performer would want to be too critical of somebody they just may have to work with someday. I found the performer/judges generally not to be too hurtful or harsh. If Paula was to be replaced, I think a record exec would do nicely. But I've grown to like Paula in that spot. But what would I know? I liked Diana and apparently there's something wrong with me, my ears and my taste. Oh well ... I've been told that before -- for liking the type of music that I like, so I'll take it like a woman as I always have! LOL

Of the guest judges, I thought Quentin Tarantino was probably the best. He said what he felt, like it or not. But then again, he's viewed as eccentric anyway. Linda's right that another performer would most likely not be so harsh.

To be honest with you, all of the guest judges have been nice, WAY TOO NICE!!! I mean, this isn't Mr Rogers. This is a contest for a recording contract. These guest judges are up there like: " Hi boys & girls, no, your performance wasn't that bad. What's that??? Oh, they threw tomatoes at you??? We'll boys & girls, those are just some meanies. You know, sometimes people do things to hurt other people. That makes us feel sad. They expected you to actually be able to sing. Well, you can't sing. But that's not important, you're really nice & that's what counts. It's nice to be important, but it's mor important to be nice. Now sing with me boys & girls....I Luv U, U Luv Me...."

DISGRACEFUL!!!

These artists & industry insiders should be honest, not cruel, but honest. In fact, by being so nice, they're being cruel. Trust me, some of those contestants will go on an audition, have someone be totally honest with them & they'll be like: "Well so & so thinks that I can sing". Well guess what????? So & So lied & that's a disservice to all. I understand that they don't want to crush anyone's dream, but reality is reality. If they can't accept honest critisism, they won't get far in the business anyway. The indusrty folks should know better. Their lack of candor comes across as pandering, as though they're trying to brainwashing us into believing that we're hearing something really, really special. Shame on them all!!!

Bring back Clive!!!!

American Idol without cruelty is like "The Sopranos" without the violence and the cussin.

Hey Linda Di,

Sweetheart, there ain't nothing wrong with your ears. Diana's got a powerhouse voice & when she really learns the various nuances & how to really use her voice, she'll be someone to deal with. She just needs a little more time & a little work. I have a feeling that she'll be alright. That leads me to another fundamental problem with the show...

I have a problem with a show that pits a 16 year old against a 25 year old. I think that there's a difference as regards maturity. I think that human nature is to have more empathy toward the younger contestant. I have seen competetions where an older contestant was booed for being better than a much younger contestant. They crowd treated them as though they were picking on the younger contestant.

Think about it, if you were a 12-19 year-old, who would your kinship be with....a 16 year-old, or, that "OLD" 25 year-old????

They need to revamp this show. The voting process, the judging process, all of those corny "Behind The Music" & zany Monkees moments need to go bye-bye. It's simply not cute, or entertaining, not to me anyway. They need to re-think this show. That idea of "Vote for your favorite" needs to be 86ed. It should be vote for TALENT!!

Oh yeah....BRING BACK CLIVE!!! :-)

Sudi,

You would've fit in fine at The Apollo. Reality??? Man if those folks were singing at Amateur Night, they'd need a Psychiatrist to deal with the trauma.

Destruction, I hear you. But they're not really that cruel to the contestants. They're cruel to us by insisting that we've heard someting special. Well, maybe they didn't lie. We did hear some special singing at times. Unfortunately, it was 'specially bad!!! Paula, start 'splanin'!!!!

Je Je, I can imagine Simon's date slapping all upside the head! Could you imagine a romantic night with Simon??? "Hey Love, what's wrong with your hair?? Looks like Phyllis Diller in a food processor. Who taught you how to move?? You move like a spastic camel in heat!!! Your performance was hideous, just hideous. You know, you're extremely lucky that I've nothing else to do tonight, or you'd be gone. You're lucky that you've got one more chance to show your stuff. Honestly, I don't think you're what I'm looking for, you are not an American Idol".

There is so much wrong with this show, I wouldn't know where to begin. But it is what it is, and most of us watch it and feelings run so
high after each show. There were some contestants who sucked and I can't believe they made it past the auditions. And there were others who were good, but didn't get past the auditions. Why? It's all in the ears/eyes of the individual. I listen to the judges and think to myself "did they hear what I just heard?" For example, Fantasia last night. The song she sang at the end -- to me -- was awful. Her voice was so screechy, I had to hit the mute button. And I heard that from more people than not today. But I'll give her props; she was tired, excited, and probably overwhelmed. I thought Diana was better - granted she had a bad night Tuesday, but I don't think she is a joke by any means. She's a kid with talent that needs to be developed, although she's done well for her age. This thing called music is different for ALL people. I even know people who liked John Stevens and thought he should have won. And we hung his red-headed azz out to dry on this forum.

Ever since I asked for a James Brown record when I was 7, I have been mocked for liking "that awful Black music" (and believe me, that is kind compared to other comments). And now I'm in a place where the music I love is celebrated and I here I sit feeling like a freak after reading the thread last night. People are not going to agree on who's good and who's bad. But we should RESPECT each other's taste. But guess what, folks? I still like Diana regardless.

Just having my say ...

Hi Juice;
Funny thing Jimmy said the same thing you said about the show a couple weeks ago to a reporter!
RE: the part about telling these kids that have NO talent...that they are "good" would essentially hurt them in the long run. Why do that to them, why hurt them, its better to find out early on that they haven't a chance for a career in the music industry. In other words why give contestants false hope?
Personally, I was never impressed with any of the "talent" on A.I.! I liked LaToya's voice the best but that and $1.50 will get me a N.Y.C. subway ride! Unless they raised the token fee since the last time I rode it! LOL!
Take Care,
S.S.

Hey Linda Di,

It's all good. The young lady had a bad moment at the worst possible time. Unlike Red, Diana's got talent. The main problem that she needs to fix is when she sings in her lower register. When she goes all out with those long sustained noted, she's got some serious power in those lungs of hers. Once she gets a little more experience & work, she'll be someone to contend with.

Yes, Fantasia was hyped singing that last song. She's an emotional girl & I don't know how she was able to sing theough the tears. I believe that she was overwhelmed by the magnitude of her accomplishment.

You are so right about those "HUH???" moments. There were many who made it through that I just didn't get. There were others who didn't & I believe that their "look" or body type was the reason why, not their lack of vocal talent.

Darling girl, don't you ever feel like a freak for liking what you like! There's no need to feel like a freak. Look at it like this: perhaps you heard something that went past others heads!!! Later for our opinions!!! If you like it & you love it & it makes you feel good, Linda, stand up & shout: I LIKE IT, I LOVE IT & GUESS WHAT.....IT...MAKES...ME....FE EL...GOOOOD!!!!

Now when you do that, pick up your favorite brush & stand in front of your favorite mirror & you stand there proud & strong. Then you work it girl!! You do your thing & that's all there is to it.

Your opinion is the only one that counts, it's your thing, do what you wanna do. We can't tell you what to listen to.

From this day forward, I give you the authority to tell me: "Juice.....shut the hell up!!!! I like Diana, so Juice....shut uppp!"

Feel free to use that one if you ever need to!! :-) :-) :-)

Seriously S.S., you would think that these "professionals" would know better. Maybe they figure that the voters will do the dirty work for them. I only know that if it were me, I'd ask TRUE friends what they honestly think. I would want to knopw the truth.

What those judges do is similar to a woman who allows her man to believe that he's a great lover, when in reality, he ain't raising no type of hell AT ALL!!! Poor schmuck gets to the next woman, sweating, grunting , talking much crap & she's looking at him like: FOOL PLEASE, ARE YOU FOR REAL??? And as he picks his face & ego off of the floor, he walks away a shattered man. He's been set up & never even knew how horrible he was. That's what these judges are doing to these kids & that's sad!!!

HEY S.S.

It's Juice. Hey Soul Sister, I wanna be an American Idol. You think you can get Jimmy to give me some singing lessons?? I can get Bobby to play guitar, you to play tambourine & get some of the girls here to sing background. Maybe Lady Mystique, Dyva & Medusa, I'll call them Juices' Angels.

Then, I can get someone to stand backstage & sing, while I lip sync & shake my thing all over the stage (no crotch grabbing, Juice got class!). If that doesn't work, I can speed up my vocals & sound like Barry White on helium. Yeah, that could work, that'll be my hook. What's that? Some guy named Kanye is already doing that??? DAMN!!! So Soul Sister, wanna be my manager??? I know I can get the same deal that William Hung got, at least. Hey, I'm sexier & I can move baby!!!! Wait'll they get a load of me!!! Can't you just see it.............

Hey Juicy;
LOL! LOL! Singing lessons can't make someone become a great singer if it doesn't come from deep within, either you have it or you don't. Jimmy's singing is born out of his emotional pain, life's experiences, and relating to the story of a song, what it's saying, is it meaningful to life, then he just lets it all hang out.
Manager, hell no, managing Jimmy is enough work for a lifetime!:-)
SMILE.......

I would pick Clive to replace Randy, not Paula. If Paula were to be replaced, I remember Carnie Wilson did a capable job as a judge on Fame a while back. She didn't sugar-coat things, and she certainly has a strong musical lineage. Simon has to be there; the show was his concept, and the winners end up on his label.

Sis - The truth will set them free. :-)

On the other hand, there was a movie studio representative in the early 30s who offered the following assessment of Fred Astaire when he was trying to make the leap from stage to screen:

"Can't sing. Can't act. Slightly bald. Can dance a little"

:-)

Regards,
Ken

I would just LOVE to be a judge on Idol.
I would probably out- Simon Simon and make HIM blush!!
I pull NO punches.I tell it like it T-I-Z and then some.
I have absolutely NO tolerance for talentless and flat singing people, NONE!!

I'm not sure that I would like someone else to take Paula's seat on AI. Paula shows tact in not being so hard on the young "Idols". Most of these kids have never been put into this type of environment, they've probably sung in local school productions and talent contests. Some of them have never been out of their home towns or visited a big city.

These tender young vocalists are out of their element singing in front of hugh crowds. To their credit, the vocals got better after weeks of being critiqued and groomed. Remember it takes time to bring out the good qualities, such as stage presence, true vocal range and song selection.

Paula is the buffering force between those two testosterone endowed guys:-), she does not tear down their fragile young feelings:-(. She makes them feel there is something positive in their performance even if it is not a flattering critique. And when a performer is really not on target, she lets them know their performance was not up to par. Remember even some losers of shows like AI, Apollo Amateur Hour, Ted Macks Original Amateur Hour and Star Search have become singing sensations.

Clay Aiken lost on AI and is now an accomplished singer. Britney Spears(not such a talented example IMHO) lost on star search and is now famous to some.

I vote to keep Paula in her seat, sweetness is always needed with bitterness.

I understand the sentiments behind Vonnie's comments, but what she's talking about is the reason why we're inundated with crap like these damned boy bands and American Idol in the first place. Damn these dime-a-dozen singers! I'm so sick of people who can't play, write or even sing with any real prowess being championed like they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. If they suck, they need to be told, "You suck." They already suck to a certain extent for being unable to do anything musical but warble. And if warbling and ass-wiggling is all that the masses can relate too, then damn the masses too!

If you can't educate, exterminate, that's what I say.

Ah! I feel better.
