Since this has nothing to do with the Staple Singers, thought I'd start a new thread. Dug up from my collection the following gospel Detoit label 45s. Due to my scanner being old, some may be hard to read....If anyone needs info off the label that is not legible, just holler! :-) Nikki

That was the Victory Five's first recording.

Here is a photo of the Gospel Echoettes.

Wow Nikki!!

Amazing scans.

Since Gospel music is my first love, I doubly appreciate these scans.

Keep them coming Nikki, as I have always wondered about Detroit's Gospel music history.

Thanks Nikki - great stuff !

Message in case anybody doesn't know was one
of Harvey Fuqua's pre-Motown labels.

Bobby, I haven't heard much Detroit gospel
but there's a lot of it to be discovered by
non-Detroiters. A lot of it has links to
people we know better from their R&B / soul records - but you'd expect that wouldn't you.

I'm glad that another side of Detroit's immensely
rich musical history is getting some coverage on
SD. When I regain access to my database I'll
try to post some partial label listings I've
compiled on Detroit gospel labels.

Just noticed that Floyd Henley single on Bilesse
(Bill Moss' label) - another piece of the jigsaw
is that Floyd had a Gamble-Huff produced single
in '68 on a one-shot (?) label called Kas-Mo.

Does that ring any bells with you, Bobby ?

Davie

PS Nikki, could you have a look at the thread
about the Ivies ? I know the early sixties is one
of your special periods - maybe you could give us the benefit of your knowledge.

Hi Nikki - great scans! We obviously have similar tastes...

Here are some more for you all - I'd be happy to post up some 78 rpm scans on Detroit labels like JVB (like Aretha's 1st), Staff, Fortune, Prosperity, Church Of Christ, Satin and others if they are of interest to anyone here...

Mystics on Idessa Malone's Staff label

Ann & Hearts on Knowles
This a capella female group record is one of my favourites - stunning!

Bro Chas Cotton on Meldor
It should be COGIC not COGIE, of course...

National Independent Singers on Ricare

Rev A Carruthers on Brighter Day
His earlier 45 on Fortune (as Rev Arthur Carruthers) is better though.

Halo GS on Golden Age

Is the singer on the Halo Gospel Singers 45 THE one and only J.J. "Real Humdinger" Barnes?

I found the following site through 1 of the links posted in the Black Gospel\Scottish Roots thread.

http://www.museum.msu.edu/muse um/tes/gospel/index.htm

It's titled "Lest We Forget, Legends of Detroit Gospel"

My wife is a big fan of The Clark Sisters. My personal faves include The Meditation Singers.

I don't know for sure, but I believe that J.J. Barnes on the Halo label should be "The" J.J. Barnes from Detroit who was on Kable/Mickay's/Ric Tic/Groovesville. No one else recording in Detroit would dare to use his same name. On the other hand, J.J. usually had his name listed for writing credits as J. Barnes, or J.J. Barnes. There was also a Jimmy Barnes/AKA James Barnes from Detroit who also recorded both Soul AND Gospel records in Detroit. He recorded as James Barnes and The Agents on Golden Hit Records. He "could possibly" be the Jimmy Barnes listed as writer. However, as J.J. is the producer, the latter situation is not very likely.

There was also a Jimmy Barnes & The Gibraltars who recorded for Savoy. I believe they were a New Jersey or NY group. THAT Jimmy Barnes sounds nothing like J.J., and probably isn't The James Barnes who recorded with The Agents in Detroit. But if anyone has information on that, I'd like to find out for sure.

yes Bobby E..that record on Message is one of the great ones it came out in the late summer of 1962 ,now the other side called "Jordan River" was the A side and local WJLB DJ Bristoe Bryant broke that record on his morning gospel part of his daily program, he played gospel from 6 to 7:30 and then went to "Bristoe's Rockin' Rocket" playing the regular soul stuff from 7:30 to 9am.

when "Jordan River" came out Bristoe had a little contest and anyone who could write a postcard with the words to the beginning intro of the song(1st 25) won a copy. yeah man that was good radio.

Nikki and BJL, thanks for the great scans.

Robb, It will be the J.J. Barnes of Mickay's fame. Although it isn't J.J. on the James Barnes and the Agents' 45; I think that might be Jock Mitchell.

Anyone out there have any info on The Flying Clouds? I have "I Know it was Blood" on c.d. and the song blows me away each time I can work myself up to listen to it. It's one of the few records that makes me want to go to church.

I'm glad you all enjoyed my scans. I enjoy sharing them. BJL, yours are awesome, and I am not familiar with ANY of them! Thanx for posting them. Looks like I have some new 45s to add to my current "want list"!

Davie G....I'll try to find the Ivies thread and see if I have any input. When I am not here for several days or a week, it seems sometimes hundreds of threads are passing me by..... :-(

Robb - I have the J.J. Barnes & the Agents 45, and also the Jimmy Barnes & the Gibraltars 45s (only my Jimmy Barnes 45 is on the Gibraltar label, not Savoy)....They sound like two different people - no connection. (I scanned the 45s, but didn't feel it necessary to post the images here, as this thread is really about Detroit gospel 45s.) The Gibraltar issue is an East Orange, New Jersey label.

Sideburn...The Flying Clouds of Detroit recorded
"I Know It Was Blood" on Haven 508 in 1948. The group then consisted of Elmer A. Stallworth, John T. Evans, Anderson Lee Hall, Leon Milton Erwin, and William Turner. Elmer A. Stallworth and John T. Evans lead on this song.
(Group member discography again courtesy of "Gospel Records 1943 - 1969 A Black Music Discography" by Cedric J. Hayes & Robert Laughton.)

I love this music, with 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's (for the most part) gospel harmony being my favorite. I could listen to it for hours on end.

:-) Nikki

I'll post some more on the Flying Clouds later (I can scan some 78s too if anyone wants) but you should check out a CD on the English "Heritage" label of radio broadcasts from the 1940s. More info at http://www.interstate-music.co.uk/HTCD46.htm

In the meantime, here's a nice advertising card from the Clouds...

Here are the D-Town "Devotional Series" 45s I know about:

#201 - Meditations - Farther Along / My Soul Got Happy
#202 - Griffinaires - I Don't Want To Be Lost / He Is The Master
#203 - Meditations - The Love Of God / Is Your All On The Alter
#204 - Staple Singers - Standing At The Bedside of My Neighbor / I'll Fly away
#206 - Staple Singers - I Will Trust In The Lord / Tell Him What You Want
#207 - Voices Of The Tabernacle - Blessed Assurance / I Trust In You

Does anyone know if there's a #205?

It seems to me I've seen 208 listed somewhere before. For 40 years, now, I've assumed there were 8 in the series, so, perhaps I even saw 208 years ago.

FYI

In the trad Gospel world, all groups were called "quartettes" or in the southern enunciation, "QUAH-tettes", even if they had five members.

I have witnesed many QUAH-tettes during my Vibrations days.
