I would like to ask SDF members here in the States not to post the American Idol Winner information. Our fellow SDF members in other countries will not get the show until later this week, and it would be nice if it is kept a secret . So let's keep the finals among ourselves until they have had a chance to view the show. |

Vonnie, That's right! We have to remember that some folks are in different time zones. I hope that everyone will adhere to your post. That would certainly be the respectful thing to do! GOOD LOOKING OUT!! Good reminder! Vonnie, you're on your toes, aren't you Lady V???? That's why you're in charge of the mallet |

Thank you Vonnie - very thoughtful. However, it was broadcast on our station this morning here in the UK. I would think a few broadcasters over here will not be able to keep it a secret for long. |

Bobby!!! I told you!!! It was all about Da Benjamins, Da Scrilla, Da Scratch, Da Dinero, Da Shekels, Da Rubles, Da Grip, Da Bank, Da Dead Presidents, Da Dough, Da Dollar Dollar Bill Y'all, know what I mean. Here's the math: Fantasia being robbed would have meant: scandal + upset viewers + angry consumers + negative media coverage + angry judges + potential boycotts + nervous producers + upset sponsors - credibility _________________ = NO MORE A.I. AND THEY ALL KNEW IT!!! They couldn't have allowed it if they wanted to. The stink would have been horrific! I'm just glad that America did the right thing. I had every confidence that they would. There would have been no way they could have explained away the way poor Diana went way off-key & lost it in that final performance, no way at all. Had Diana nailed it.................. Thankfully, we'll never know!!! |

I seriously do not envision Clive Davis signing Diana De Garmo. I believe that he was only trying to be "polite" to her on the night that he was a judge, because she sang a Melissa Manchester song, and melissa was an Arista artist at one time. And no one will sign poor Jsmine, unless of course its a Hula band! BTW, it was nice to see Philly represented by La Toya and George!! |

If you think about the way the voting works: three phone banks for each contestant taking calls at full capacity for four hours, it pretty much guarantees that the number of votes will be close to identical. That's why I find it funny when they try to manufacture drama by saying that there was less than 1% separating the contestants. Unless one singer's fans stop flooding the phone bank, the result would have to be within a very small margin (and near-random). I wonder if Elton John will be characterizing America as "less incredibly racist" now? LOL Regards, Ken |

I thought that LaToya did a pretty good job with If You Don't Know Me! I knew that one Mr Eli would be pleased with the Philly Big-Up!!! Ken: I wonder about that! Considering that LaToya & Jennifer were voted off, I don't think Elton's gonna change his opinion much. I guarantee you that he still feels that an injustice was done to those young ladies. I believe that he feels that LaToya or Jennifer should have won the contest. I just believe that a star was born before our very eyes. Fantasia has grown tremendously & she has got that something special. I originally felt that LaToya had it all, but, as a performer, Fantasia has that "IT" factor that LaToya didn't show. Fantasia just reached out & grabbed everyone & not everyone has that kind of connection. That's what I feel did LaToya in. She sings great, has a hell of a voice. However, she seemed to grow distant & lost her connection with the audience. Some of her performances seemed like technical vocal exercises, you know what I mean?? I mean, she sang great, but something was missing. It was like cool detachment, the connection seemed to be lost. Meanwhile, Fantasia stopped talking back to Simon, dropped her arrogant attitude & upped her game. She earned the victory, anyone agree, disagree??? |

Juicefree, I totally agree with you. LaToya was my original choice. Her vocals are great, no question. But to me she lacked that spark that seperates mere singers from stars. |

Even if you rule out "rigging," a flawed voting system, hackers playing a joke, silly adolescents, and racism, there's still no meritocratic explanation for Fantasia, Jennifer and LaToya finding themselves at the bottom of the voting while those other bumps on logs got a pass. The final outcome doesn't change the fact that that just shouldn't have happened. The whole process and premise of the show practically guarantees that even the winner is going to be rough as a cob. So there's always going to be some failing that you can trump up to try to justify screwed up results. A somewhat shaky case can be made for Diana De Garmo's staying power - she'd make a great amusement park performer, by the way. But, Jennifer, LaToya and Fantasia could have done practically nothing negative to justify Jasmine, who can't carry a tune in a bucket, being given a pass over them. |

Hi Reese, The thing is she admitted as much. Unfortunately, sometimes that does influence how people think. If people think that you're blase' & aren't really hungry, they become blase' & figure that if you aren't stressing it, why should they? Whether if be right or wrong, some folks want to see that hunger, that eye of the tiger. They want to see that burning desire. I don't think that's LaToya's nature & I think that it really hurt her. I would still buy her music, because I feel that she's great. Everybody can't be charismatic & I don't hold her demeanor against her. The girl's got skills & she'll be just fine if she get a good producer & good material. She's already a winner in my eyes! |

I'd rather hear a "mere" singer who can sing than a "star" who can't. There are a lot of the former being passed over, and a lot of the latter being palmed off on the world. Of course, the world doesn't deserve better, because the world wears its ignorance on its chest like a medal of honor. |

Sudi, You get no argument from me. When I heard some of the performances of those who had gotten booted off, I couldn't believe my ears. I was sitting there saying to myself: "These folks actually are on National TV singing?" Then I think of The Dells, or Cheryl Lynn & how there's no place for them & think that people just don't appreciate real talent anymore. I find myself wondering just what has happened to people's hearing? If those were good performances, I'll eat my Aretha Franklin LPs, SUPERSIZED!!! Man, has this country's standards fallen. We cheer mediocrity & call it GREAT! Maybe it's just me......... |

Sudi, Diana DeGarmo was actually an amusement park performer. The other night, they showed a clip of her performing at Dollywood. That said, I don't know any other way for the show to reward talent over popularity except for the judges to have the final say. The voting public has already shown that vocal talent isn't always the reason they vote for someone. Maybe they should change the title of the show to America's Top Vocalist. American Idol means different things to different people. I mean, Fabian was an idol at one point. But I never heard anyone rave over his vocal ability. |

It's not just you, Juice. It's a product of consumption-oriented society. People don't give a damn about the production process and really, nobody expects the production process itself to be particularly satisfying any more. Just give them cheap, stupid stuff to consume with little outlay of money or effort. It's not important how sound the product is, or how much prowess the producer has or doesn't have as long as we can taste the sugar, salt, MSG, and fat, or as long as we can dance to it. We'll let the celebrity judges tell us if it's any good - they won't lie to us. That's the ethic that American Idol pushes. Paying dues? Writing? Singing talent? Playing an Instrument? Cultivating stage presence and performance polish by actually paying dues? Who needs that stuff? Just get to the level of mediocre and look good, the corporate machine will do the rest. You'll extend your 15 minutes of fame a few fold and get some nice clothes to wear when you're washed up and broke in a two or three years. |

Sudi, Well said. It's not so strange when you think about it. It used to be that when your VCR went on the blink, you'd have a repair man fix it. Now, they're so cheap that the cost of fixing it would be double the price of a new one. In other words, it's disposable. Throw it out, get a new one. That seems to be the way that entertainment goes these days. One star burns out, pull them out, plug in the replacement. Remember Menudo, New Kids, O Town, Backstreet boys, et.al??? |

Bobby E!!! Get thee to S.C. pronto & hook that Gal up! Bobby, tell you what. In the beginning, I didn't see it. As a performer that young lady grew into a woman before our eyes. She GREW into a complete performer, one who can handle ballads, funk, gospel, whatever. She's got charisma out the ying yang & I'm impressed with how she changed from the smart mouth girl into a total performer in mere weeks. We knew that she could sing, but, I don't think we expected this! People compare her to Macy Gray.....NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!! She's unique!! She has the knack of taking any song & making it her own. When she sang Summertime, you would have thought that she was a seasoned old pro. They way she handled that song, reminded me of Ms Ross in Lady Sings The Blues. She held that audience in her hands. For a 19 year-old to have that type of depth & nuance is impressive. You can't teach that, either you've got it or, you don't. This young lady has the goods!! She's a triple threat & she sure seems to channel the young Tina & Patti. I can't say any more, I'm impressed! |

I agree with the previous couple of posts on Fantasia, especially one comment about her being unique. I felt that the other unique contestant was George Huff, and I realize that he's received a lot of negative criticism about his pitch and general demeanor, but there was something really distinct in his voice--I wouldn't confuse him with anyone else--and I hope that he is able to stay in tune and progress. I wouldn't sell my soul to the devil, but I'd do something to have such a mellow sound. |

Fantasia is a natural. That young lady has such poise & confidence. She's made for the spotlight, you can see the way she handles it. She even got Jay to "dance". The girl is like an old pro!!! She's got "IT", that's all that I can say. |
