Russell & Piano Man!!!

Great to see you back! How is Mrs Tompkins?? I'm sorry that I couldn't make it to The Beacon. I had to work & believe me, I was one disgruntled Postal Worker!!! It's ok though, I didn't "Go Postal" or hurt anyone :-)

I hope that you guys will be be in the New York area soon. I heard nothing but rave reviews regarding the show. I hope that you guys come back soon!

Hi Russell Thompkins!

I wont go into a long drawn speech of what I worship and adore about your voice and music...but know that it rides with me everyday: in particular the first album and Round 2 which are CLASSICS. Thanks for the music!

Whenever you come to NY I will try to get a chance to greet you and show you a picture I took with you in the parking lot of Westbury Music Fair when you did a show wit the Dramatics, circa: 1988-89. It was a great show then and Im sure you put on a great one now. Hope to see you perform soon!

Hello, soulful folks!

Hi, Mr. Russell Thompkins Jr.!!!

I only wanna says to you how I was captivated from the first time I buy the single "People make The World Go Round" in my teens. And how I have had bitter-sweet moments hearding the mellow "Rockin' Roll Baby" album, especially your falsetto in "This Could Be The End". Congratulations for your so long and prolific career and i wish to you many more years of success.

I should to add, The Stylistics was not only the most popular Philly soul act in Spain, but perhaps the soul act most popular. Also is the only soul act that my wife hear sometimes (she is not a soul fan!!).

Best Regards, Peace & Soul Food!

Hello
I just heard that the'STYLISTICS" were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of FAME..The award cermony will be in Las Vegas or Pittsburg..
Here is my Question..
Should the new singers of the FAKE STYLISTICS go to the Cermony?..
Let's see..Airrion sung on the record for 30 sec each.Herb Murrell didn't sing at all on those HIT RECORDS? Eban Brown has no History with the group(Making any records) Van (the same as Eban Brown)..What do you all think?

I think the original group of the Stylistics should put their differences aside for one evening, accept their award for the works and represent as whom everyone remembers singing on the record...and the other members should stand aside, just for that night, and let life go on after that appearance. It appears through that request there is conflict, and perhaps this can create some closure in some way.

Piano Man, I'm delighted they will be recognized in this way. But, as DivaNaye says, the guys who originated the group and name (regardless of their differences) should come together IN PEACE and accept the award and then move on. After all, the award is to commemorate the years gone by and they do include Herb and Airrion. It is the RIGHT thing to do. Trust me.

Fayette, it is Piano Man and he is Russell's Musical Director, as noted above.

Just found the site. Since the last one was shutdown. Good to see you all.

I'll put out my standard request - Please, those of you who know vs those of you who claim to know. Please put out Russell's concert schedule on this site, or e-mai to me for his concerts over the next 3 months.

If we don't know, we can't go!!!

I agree with momotown and dyvanae - for any group awards, the whole group shows up. That is the model for past awards where the group had broken up. Believe it or not, this isn't the first time inductees to awards at the time of the award were in separate competing groups, but got together for the award.

ps - on the previous site I was john

Hello everyone,

FJT here. Sorry it took me so long to get registered, but the admininstrators said it may have been caused by the problems they were experiencing with the server.

Hope everyone is well. I will be posting a list of dates for Russell Thompkins, Jr. & The New Stylistics in a couple of days. Please note that several of these dates are tentative. I will keep updating the list when the dates become confirmed.

Please feel free to send me a post with any questions you may have about Russell or the group. You may also send Russell email at: rthompkinsjr@att.net or email me at: fthompkins@att.net.

Russell is not adept at the email/thread thing yet so I will be his connection to you until he is up and running. Piano Man is his musical director and also a source of information.

The website is being built as we speak and should be up and running in a couple of months. Will keep you posted.

Thank you all for your continued support.

FJT,

Yesterday, my friend's husband asked me if I could replace a tape of soul music that I'd made for him about 5 years ago. It was heavy with Philly soul. He's telling me that he misses his Teddy and Harold Melvin, and Day by Day. Then he says, I think you had one by the Stylistics, but I can't remember which.

I call my 6-year old (PrincessD) over, who's been listening to a few of their songs for the past 3 weeks and ask her to sing a little of the Stylistics. Immediately, she goes:

"You are everything and everything is you"
Okay, do another one.

"It's never too late, too late to stop, look, listen to your heart hear what it's saying..."

Still not it? Do you remember anymore?

"You're the one that I've been waiting for forever, and ever will my love for you keep growing strong. I think that's my favorite."

Then he says, "Yeah that's the one."

"I know some more"
Thanks honey but that's okay. She walks away singing under her breath,

"My love, I'll never find the words, my love"

I'm glad I could share that with you. She will just DIE when she finds out we're communicating. Heck if the Stylistics become her new faves, maybe I'll have the heart to tell her that Eddie Kendricks is not going to be around to marry her when she finishes college.

Hey D:

I have a 7 year old sweetie that sings Skip Mahoney and the Casuals tunes along with Blue Magic. She loves the falsetto leads!! Stylistics would be right up her alley. Maybe they can start a group. lol

Great story.

Why hello Mr. and Mrs. Thompkins! At first I thought someone was playing a joke!!
I LOVED the Stylistcs..they were the first "adult" group I idolized! When I was 12 I had 4 groups that I loved...the J-5 .. The Stylistics, Tavares and Blue Magic (for my adult taste!!)
The first album I ever purchased was the "Rocking Roll Baby" Lp! As a matter of fact I still have and the music is just as wonderful today as it was back then!!
Take care!!

Destruction,

It's great to hear that your 6-year old daughter knows the music. So many people, young and old, have told us that they grew up to the music and now they're playing it for their kids. That's how the history continues.

Soulaholic,

It's also great that your 7-year old sings the old school stuff. If she loves Skip Mahoney and Blue Magic I'm sure she will take to the Stylistics. Please encourage her to continue to love the music.

Jrlo,

Glad you love the group. You put them in some good company with the J5, Tavares. and Blue Magic. They're some of my favorites too.

Treble Clef,

You hit the truth right on the head when you called Piano Man a "Music Hero"!!!!!

He is a Member of the very talented "Thompson Family" who are local Philadelphia legends in thier own right. He was taught by a Philadelphia Musical Genius who is internationally renowned, and if you've wondered how valuable he has been to The Stylistics for the fifteen years that he was thier musical director, all you need to do is compare the music of the live concerts of Russell Thompkins Jr and the New Stylistics, to the music of the old group (not trying to put anyone down)and you see how important a Skilled Musical director is!!!!!!

Okay, I must be out of the loop. First I want to say that I love the Stylistics!!!! Since I was 5 or 6, the voice of Russell Thompkins Jr. has mesmerized me. I knew he had left the group and did not know why. Russell, I hope that when you all are inducted, that it will be a joyous time-for the original members. I guess that I was fortunate to see you in '99 at the Stone Soul Picnic- hosted by KBLX radio station in the Bay AREA at Dunsmuir House. That was my first time to ever see the group sing and what a show you all put on. You shared to the bill with the Dramatics, the Main Ingriedients, Delfonics & the Chi-Lites! That was actually the first time I had ever seen any of these groups, whose music I grew up listening to!!! My favorite songs, too many to list ,but here are some: You're A Big Girl Now,You're As Right As Rain, Rock & Roll Baby, Betcha By Golly Wow, You'll Never Get To Heaven, Hurry Up This Way Again, It Started Out, and one that doesn't get mentioned that often, Heavy Fallin' Out-Russell, you WORKED that song to the very END!!!!!! The production on that song was AWESOME!!!!! I'm sorry that it did not work out with the former members, but I hope you never stop singing!!!! Your voice should be registered!!:-):-):-)

Charise,

It's always great to hear that someone grew up with the music. Your list of favorite songs is impressive. "Heavy Fallin'Out" though not widely known in the US was a really big hit in the UK and Japan. Russell does some extremely good vocals on it, even though the song was lacking in lyrical content. "It Started Out" is one of my favorites too. Thanks for the words of encouragement. Have you heard Russell's solo CD "A Matter of Style"? If so, what do you think?

Ahhh Mrs. "T"..."Heavy Fallin' Out" was the 1st single to catch my ears via local radio, and I immediately snagged the album...which I thoroughly enjoyed. But,IMHO,the switch to Thom Bell as producer totally blew away the Hugo & Luigi material...and it was the switch that that made me look at the flip side of the coin...A&R, production values, etc. and realize that the success of an artist is truly a team effort.

WRT favorite songs...there are so many in the soundtrack to my life, but "You're As Right As Rain" has got to be in the Top 5

1wicked,

You're so right. There is no comparison when it comes to Thom Bell & H&L. Success is a team effort and both teams (PIR & H&L) had their own ideas on what material to do and how to promote it. Even though the H&L stuff was corny, in my opinion, it appealed to the international crowds around the world. "You're As Right As Rain" is also one of my favorites. You really get a special appreciation for it when the new group sings it. They have the harmonies really tight and they sound so sweet.

Hey Flo,
Welcome to a relatively sane versio of Soulful Detroit.

This is Bobby Eli who, along with Norman Harris played all of the guitar stuff on the Stylistics Philly records, and yes Bell, Creed and the Stylistics were a match made in heaven.
All of those records imo personified the sweet soul side of the Sound of Philly at its finest, and imo they are all condidered to be standards for eternity.

Russell always talks highly of you. He has your email addresses and phone #s and is planning on getting in touch with you soon. As soon as things slow down. You, Norman, and all the other musicians, and all of the background singers were awesome on all the Philly tracks. You guys were the Philly sound. Those days will never be duplicated. Good talking to you. Keep in touch. My email is fthompkins@att.net.

People get out and see Russell Thompkins, Jr. and The New Stylistics when they come to your local area- they were simply fabulous during their Valentine's Day concert in Baltimore! There was an intermission after their performance and the lobby was "abuzz" with comments on Russell's impeccable vocal delivery- and the band (led by Piano Man) was incredibly tight!

FJT,

Patty and I are looking forward to the new website- keep up the great work!

Bobby,

Your significant contributions to "The Sound of Philadelphia" are endless (both as a musician and producer). Your insight on how "Sideshow" was initially brought to Thom Bell (for The Stylistics) but ended up with Blue Magic is quite interesting.

Kenny, thanks for the personal info.
Looking forward to seeing you, RT and the group over here in the UK sometime soon.
Right as Rain was always one of the unrecognised great tracks by the Stylistics. Payback is a Dog is another favourite of mine, but somehow the production (a bit too languid) or perhaps the title just doesn't help to really pull it off, otherwise it could have been another monster.

It's great to hear from you. Hope you and Patty are doing well. Russell and the guys are scheduled to come to Pomokney, MD at the LaMont Fairgrounds on August 15th and back to Baltimore on Oct. 9th. Hope to see you at one of those places.

dvdmike,

Van McCoy was an excellent writer, arranger, and producer. He wrote many of the up tempo songs, while he collaborated with H&L on several others. H&L had a lyric man named David Weiss who penned a lot of the other tunes (the more cornier ones). Weiss had had several hits with artists from the 60s era.

I know who George David Weiss is, he wrote a number of songs during the 50s and collaborated much with Hugo & Luigi during the early 60s. I was just wondering about the Stylistics stuff because it was a bit hipper than the usual Hugo & Luigi-George David Weiss fare.

3 of my personal favorites which really aren't as old as some of the classics are:

NY-DELL,

Those are some of our favorite songs too. Everything from "Hurry Up This Way Again," Closer Than Close," and "1982" is at the top of my list. "You're Leaving" was written and arranged by Dexter Wansel & Cynthia Biggs. Another great team out of PIR. The vocals were done by Raymond Johnson who's now in the new group. He is a talented guy who has an exceptional voice.

FJT: 2 Questions

1-Does the new group have a record deal and/or did any of them work on Russell's solo CD ?

2- If the old group were to do a CD today, do you think it would be in the same vain as classic Stylistic material with Eban or whoever imitating Russell or would they just opt for Eban being Eban, which if they did would not make the the Stylistic's anymore, but by the same token start a new identity for them a fresh new sound (I hope I said that right, I hope you understand what I'm driving at.) Piano Man you can jump on that 2nd question also.

NY-DELL,

The group does not have a record deal, but Russell has a 2-CD deal with ForEverMore Records that produced his 1st solo CD. This deal was made before the New Stylistics formed. He is now working on a 2nd solo CD and has finished about 1/2 of the songs. I'm sure on the remaining songs the new Stylistics will be laying down the backgrounds. These guys call really croon.

The old group has no record deal. Producers just don't want to use guys that can't sing. If they ever record anything again Eban will be imitating Russell to try to keep with the old sound. It's a shame for him because he will never have his own identity as long as he's with them. If they take it to a new sound then people won't be able to identify it with the Stylistics.

I know what you're saying and it makes perfect sense. They should start a sound of their own with a new identity, but I know those guys and that won't happen. Russell and his group will be the ones that start the new sound. They have the capability and the talent to do it, and Russell's voice will always be identified with the Stylistics no matter what he sings.

FJT:

OK, But Russell being Russell, won't the two backgrounds run the risk of sounding identical....at least in style if not in quality. Russell having Raymond J. is definitly a advantage over the old group, because Arrion just doesn't seem to have it, I saw them recently and was very disappointed in his lead vocals. I can't remember ever hearing Herb sing any portion of a lead , please correct me if I'm wrong on that point, but generally speaking if both groups stay true to form, the two backgrounds would have a very simular sound (again that's putting quality aside).

NY-DELL,

I don't think you can put quality aside. If both groups recorded the same song, you would hear a definite distinction in the sound. You have to remember that Russell was doing all the leads and backgrouds, so you're being saturated by his voice, pretty much the same as his solo CD. Those other guys don't even have a sound they can call their own and when they try to replicate the wax they just can't do it because they never sang on the wax. Herb actually did sing a couple of lead vocals, but they were songs that were never played. Raymond J. is an asset to the new group. He was the one who brought a new and refreshing sound to the old group when Dunn & Smith left.

I agree with you 100% regarding quality.....but you have no idea how many people I debate on this topic...I know a few people who honestly hear no difference (and these are vocalist & musicians) sometimes I feel like I maybe wrong, cause I damn sure hear it. There is no disagreement from me that people still go to the concerts of the old group and I don't doubt that any CD they make will sell.....but I just don't hear it. Does the old group use any computers in their live performances ? that may account for why more that just a few people still say they hear no difference. I feel like I'm in an minority here.

NY-DELL,

It's not you. Most people don't have the ear to hear the difference whether they're vocalists, musicians, or just listeners. For some, as long as the song they love is being sung they don't really care who it is. I believe the old group does use tracks from time to time, especially on their European dates, but don't hold me to that. I haven't been around them since Russell left the group. I know that Russell, vehemently, hates tracks and will never use them on live performances. He thinks the audience gets ripped off when you use them. They don't get to hear the real thing.

Just another reason why the man is great. Can't wait for the next CD. What's the odds of russell ever working with some of the early producers and writers he had in the pass. And if there was one song that was done by him in the old days that he'd like to re-vamp and do differently, which one would it be ?

To NY Dell - I had never heard Russell live until 2000, with the old group. I didn't believe it, because the recordings that I had been listening to for years did no justice to his live voice. I can understand those who never heard him live thinking Eban was reasonably close to the recordings, as he was in 2001 when I saw him. At that time, Russell had just left and I came with friends who had only heard the recordings. They loved the show, and I was disappointed because I had heard Russell live; and they know good music. When I heard Eban on TV from UK on the special last month, I thought he was really bad!! Worse than when I heard him live, which was still several levels below Russell, who has an extreme power to his high notes that I haven't heard before. Others go soft at their high notes, because that is all they can do.

Ok!I read some of you guys posts.
Here is my take!
If they would TRY!(Notice I said try) to do an Album,I bet it would have to be doctor up!You have 2 sings who don't have an ear to sing easy harmony moreless hard harmony! YOU People really don't understand..These guys were ASK TO NOT COME TO THE STUDIO(This what was explain to me) So you can bet they cannot sing on any album! Yes Herb has gotten better on his leads..It took him 25 yrs to do so ,but gotten better..Airrion NO HOPE!With new toys on the market they can help them in the studio..BUT LIVE !WHEW they would need more than a pray! So they can have eban sound like Russell,PEOPLE KNOW THAT THE SOUND WON'T BE THERE!(Ain't no dancing on records)lol..
As for Russell NEW STYLISTICS!
Yes they can sing live and in a studio.NO PROBLEM THERE...Yes we are working on a Russell Thompkins and The New Stylistics Album. They all will do leads also! So just chill it is coming!

Old New Fan,

Glad you enjoyed the show. I couldn't make that one, but I heard the turnout of old and new Detroit fans was awesome. Russell said he really felt the crowd was with him and that made his performance extra special. It's always great when the people are with you.

NY-DELL,

I, personally, think it would be great if Russell and Thom Bell hooked up again. There was always a spark of magic with that duo. I also think that there was magic there with Dexter Wansel & Cynthia Biggs and I'd like to see them together again. Nothing is in the works to work with any of those people again, but who knows, anything's possible.

Russell's favorite song is "Betch By Golly Wow." I think that would be the one he would want to re-record. He was only 19 when he recorded that and I think his 35 year vocal experience would give it a new and more mature sound.

NY-DELL,

During the H&L days Russell had unlimited artistic freedom, but some of the material was not quite what he would have liked to record. The period was very difficult for us too, because it took the group away the their roots in R&B and put them in a category that we're still trying to figure out. The H&L stuff did strengthen their international presence and many of those songs became international hits. Go figure!

Russell would like to work with Quincy or Babyface, as everything they touch turns to
gold.

Hey Flo,
How ya doin.
Please give Russ a shout out and big hug for me!!

Also,
All of our Philly music had IDENTITY.
Every artist had their individual unique style and the songs were tailor made for every one of them, unlike most of todays disposable garbage.
Russel's voice, to me was the epitome of 70's era classic, sweet soul and no one could top him at his craft.

dvdmike,

It was at the High Chaparral. Russell remembers it.

Bobby,

I'm doing okay. Russell sends his best. He's looking forward to when you guys can hook up. You are so right about the music being tailor made. Every group that recorded in Philly had its own special flavor. I love all that stuff. If I could just understand a lyric these days or even be able to groove to the music I may understand it better. But I guess that's the point. You have to hear Russell these days. since he gave up drinking and smoking, his voice is crystal clear. Back in the 70s he was young, so he had that fresh sound, but these days his voice is even stronger with 30+ years of vocal experience behind it. The audiences have been loving it.

The High Chaparral, another venue from back in the day that's long gone. Along with the Burning Spear, Dingbats, Barbara's Peppermint Lounge and the Transitions East. The Transitions East was a place for the Afro and dashiki wearers to hang back in the "Black Is Beautiful" days. Wantu Wazuri (Beautiful People). I saw an early show by Earth, Wind & Fire in 1970 during my freshman year in high school. Hard to believe that there were only about 50 people in the audience. It was located at 82nd & Cottage Grove, across the street from Flukie's Lounge & Leon's Barbecue and down the street from the Salaam Restaurant and around the corner from Mahalia Jackson's Fried Chicken restaurant. The original location was at 79th & Euclid. You walked in the door to the fragrance of incense and oils. I sure miss those days.

Hey Mike, back in about '69 or 70, I co wrote and co produced a record called Wantu Wazuri by George Tindley on Wand records.
Now, I must go light up a stick of Nag Champa, my favourite incense.

Don,

Russell cannot compare David Ruffin vs Dennis Edwards. It would not be fair to either one of them, as they both took the group in very different and distinct directions. He feels as though David was was there at the beginning and definitely helped the group to achieve international/crossover status with his soaring, unique vocals. He also feels that Dennis came to the group and not only picked up where David left off, but took the group in a different direction via Norman Whitfield with his distincively strong and identifiable vocals. Russell enjoys both of them on a equal plane.

Hope all is well with you and Phyllis. I'm glad you found your way to this thread. Russell's website is being set up as we speak and soon we'll have our own forum there. I don't know when "Foolish" was written. I think it was written for Dionne Warwick and I know Johnny Mathis recorded it. I'll have to look into it a little more and get back to you.

To Mrs. Florence Thompskins,

I do agree with yours and Mr.Thompskins' view, I really do. In actuality, I do appreciate Ruffin & Edwards vox's and versatile approach, and O wow, could they deliver. I know David was with The Tempts first. In my estimation, David was more of a stand out lead (this is no disrepect to the memory of David, his family and friends), I don't think he could blend well with-in with the group in the bkgrd harmonies that well, but had potental. By far when I listen to the Dennis era, I'll hear all 4 bkgrd with the exception with overdubbing. I didn't somewhat feel/sense it with the group. All'd I hear was a 3 maybe a 4 when Melvin'll come in. It might seems a strange observation on my part. Cause when Melvin'll come in he'd blend in with the the 1st & 2nd tenors and or with a baritone. It reminds me of how the earlier doo-wopper's would harmonize together, only by the more up to date with the 60's harmonized style. As I said, I think Dennis is not only a lead but could harmonize with the group more. I never got to see the fellas live with David, except on live footage. And Yeah, I seen the fellas wtth Dennis on a few occasions.

P.S.
I'd like to see more earlier threads about Philly, maybe around from 60-61-2. Because there is so much to really be said of Philly. There is plenty enough said of Detroit, Chicago, Memphis, and other regions. Like Philly, I don't see enough info being said about LA's soul scene.
I appreciate you Mrs. Thompskins for giving me a reply.

Thank You & God Bless

Don

To Russell Thompkins, jr.

This is Bigdaddyg2k4 and I just want to say how I appreciate you and the Stylistics for bringing so much great music in my life for the past 32 years
(33 if you count my b'day 2 days ago)as a soundtrack for a lifetime. I credit my late father, who was a dj back in the 70s, for bringing in those classic LPs and 45s for me to listen to from the station (didn't care if they were dj copies or not) and the Philly sound. I was listening to the "Best Of" on the record player for the past 2 weeks until I bought the CD a week ago, and now I love the collection even more. I also have the import version of the "Best Of" w/my fave, "Peek-A-Boo. When you have the chance, click on to the "Stylistics sessions" thread and read my 2 posts on the subject, and you will understand why I love the songs u and the group sing so well. I have yet to fully listen to the Hugo & Luigi productions because I'm still on the Thom Bell-produced songs that made y'all so famous worlwide. Even though some of the presence on the charts slowed down here in the states (blame the ever-changing music trends and confusion/stupidity of record execs) you still got love from us fans here and overseas where you are VERY popular, which is a great blessing and appreciation. Just a reason 2 say thank you for the music and reading this post. 1 love.

TOP 5 STYLISTICS SONGS OF ALL-TIME (in my opinion, of course!)

1. You Make Me Feel Brand New
2. Betcha By Golly, Wow
3. Break Up To Make Up
4. You'll Never Get To Heaven
5. You're A Big Girl Now
BONUS TRACK: Hurry Up This Way Again (another song getting much play in my CD collection!)

Check out Forevermore Records' website- it has new pictures of Russell and mentions that "La La At The End" from his first solo LP ("Collection: A Matter of Style") is garnering extensive club and radio airplay in Chicago.

Bill,

How are you and Patty? I liked La La At The End from when Russell first cut it. Originally, Little Anthony cut the song, but it was never released. It has that Philly feel to it and the vocals are sweet.

FJT,

Patty and I are doing just fine- hope that you and Russell are having an enjoyable summer. I'm with you on "La La At The End," it was great that Russell found a few "hidden gems" from the Philly era that he could place his distinctive tenor on- plus I really like the new cuts "Summer Love" and "Because."

Not many people know it but I originaly gave Thom Bell Sideshow for the Stylistics but he passed on it.
I think that it would have sounded great on them.

From London & Bill,

Because is my favorite song from the CD. It has a feel that's really smooth and mellow. Just makes you want to kick back with a glass of wine and enjoy the evening.

Eli,

That's interesting about Sideshow. One of my favorite songs by Blue Magic. Russell would have done a great job with it.

Nosey,

Russell used to sing for his mother at a very early age (about 5). He could just sing all the songs on the radio. she would have him sing in front of people when she had parties. That's pretty much how he got his start. He knew he had it in Junior high school when he was on the All city Choir and worked with a woman by the name of Miss Minyard. She helped him develop his voice.

Hello Piano Man! Every summer in NYC, there are two venues in Brooklyn that give free concerts. The one where the 'other' Stylistics will be appearing at is near an Amusement park(Coney Island/Midwood for those in the NY area). These events are usually advertised thru the newspapers or word of mouth. I really was looking forward to hear Russell but unfortunately, that won't happen. :-( However, I'm happy that Dennis will be there since I had the opportunity to see him before & he was great! Anyway, I guess I will have to wait until Mr. Thompkins comes back this way. I would love to catch one of his shows.

Peace!

I excused myself to go to the restroom and as soon as I was getting ready to leave who should enter but none other than the one and only Russell Thompkins Jr.
It was so good to see him, even in the loo!!

We talked of getting together very son and he had mentioned the Soulful Detroit forum!

Hi Russell,
I'm sorta new here. I just want you to know that I grew up listening to your music and I remember seeing you and the original Stylistics at The Uptown Theatre back in 1970 when you guys first hit big with "Your a Big Girl Now" and rocked the house ( I guess I'm showing my age I guess). But however I like to ask a you a musical question. When you guys performed your songs live, did you ever find it difficult "reproducing" that polished sound live that was done in the studio? Because listening to the albums and how Thom Bell had done such a wonderful job with the songwriting, producing, the arrangements and the use of female back-up singers, Was it really hard to back that up on stage?

Rick,

It was impossible to create the background vocals that were done in the studio. Since the other 4 guys didn't sing those vocals, they found it very difficult to reproduce them on stage. However, "The New Stylistics" can not only reproduce the background vocals, they sound as close to the wax as it gets. They are extremely talented singers, unlike the 4 guys that Russell started out with.

Stay tuned everyone. russellthompkinsjr.com is coming within the next couple of weeks.

Hey all! what do you guys think about Eban Brown? I know he sang for Wilbert Hart and the Delphonics, The Manhattans, and Ray, Goodman and Brown. I think he is a great singer! I also worked with him in the business. I just think it is a shame for him. He really has not identity in the music world. He seems to be locked into sounding like William Hart, Harry Ray and now like Russell Thompkins Jr. I have not heard the New Stylistics as of yet however, I am sure they sound great!. Eban and the other stylistics sound really good.

Truefansfromeverywhere,

I understand that the Boston Show was "Off The charts" Word is that Russell Thompkins Jr seems to be picking up steam as he is determined to maintain his position at the top of the Soul classics live acts.

By the way! Reese,

I don't think Russell could care less about what Eban Brown or anyone else is doing these days, it looks and sounds like he's having far too much fun to care!!!

For the first time in a lot of years he looks, and sounds like he's having fun doing what he loves to do.

Russell Thompkins Jr, Style, Class, Confidence.

all of that, and a Voice that absolutely won't quit.

There's a lot of people around who are good, but we can't settle for good, 'cause we have the Great Russell Thompkins Jr.

I have seen both acts over the years and hands down russell thompkins jr vocal ability towers above all others in tone and range. You need a live performance to really understand .Just my humble opinion. This does not mean that others are not talented and have something to offer.

Old Fan New Fan (TFFP),

You're absolutely right. This time around Russell is enjoying himself, doing something that he's good at and that he loves. What makes it different this time is that he has the suppport of The New Stylistics and his great band under the musical direction of Piano Man. That makes all the difference in the world, when people are talented, dedicated, and have their focus going in a positive direction. Hands down, Russell's group is the better of the two. If only on sound alone, they have my vote. They are the ones that are keeping the vocals true to the wax.

Hey Piano Man,
No, you're not that bad. As a matter of fact, you're alright in my book -- it's all about the heart.:-) Sorry to hear the news about Ron Isley. I'll send up a prayer for him. Hope to see you guys soon.

Hey Treble Clef,

You gotta love it when Piano Man "zooms" in. He keeps it real when people come from another dimension and try to attack. He's a fierce and loyal brother and it's great to have him on our side.

My condolences to Mr. Billy Brown's extended Family.

Mr. Thompkins, I wanted to ask will the group will be named either Stylistcs, Russell Thompkins & The Stylistics or Russell Thompkin's Stylistics, so I won't be confused. A certain DJ here out of one always get the marquee name confused, when advertising your concert.
Thank you

The group is named "Russell Thompkins, Jr. & The New Stylistics. There's no confusion about that. The confusion lies with the promoters who continuously use whatever they see fit.

Hi Russell and/or Mrs. Thompkins!!

Just this past Sunday I found my old "In Fashion" LP...it was released in 1978 when I was in High school. I LOVED EVERY song on that one, but sadly it was crackling and scratchy. Is this album available on cd? I checked amazon and I couldn't find it. (sad face) My favorites are Sail Away, First Impressions, California Sun....if not, will it be released on cd. I will be ordering Rock and Roll Baby on cd..another great one!
Also, does Russell still talk to Airron Love?
Thanks a bunch!!

jrlo,

I'll search around for In Fashion. I know it's available on CD because I have it. I ordered it from Amazon a few months ago. No, Russell has not spoken to Airrion since he left the group in 2000. Airrion never wants that conversation to happen.

My prayers also go up for Billy Brown and his family, that they will know that the Lord is their very present help and strength continually in the days and years ahead.

Also, for Ron Isley to make a full recovery.

I pray that Russell, his wonderful bride Florence, Piano Man, and every member of the New Stylistics organization, and their families, would be blessed with health in spirit, mind, and body, that your years be many and filled with love and peace, that you would be protected on every side, and that you will want for nothing that is good and beneficial.
Always standing with you,

Hey Piano man! I am very sorry for bringing up Eban Brown. It will never happen from me again. However, you must know that this Russell Thompkins forum has a lot of topics being discussed. I guess Eban is a sore spot! Anyway, I too love Russell and his musical talents and will support his group whenever I can. I can't wait to see one of his shows. Is Russell still connected with Jack Bart?

Well, it looks like Russell will really make out financially now that he is away from all that. I am just glad to hear that he is doing well with his new group. I think I will go to the show tonight with Wil Hart formerly of the Delfonics and check the show out.

Hello fjt is it possible when the new website comes up to put a concert on the net live thru your website . The webmaster would be able to assist you. Then all the fans from around the world could see the new stylistics perform .You could even put a concert on the net that fans could pay for to view.Either way fans could see the new group. It really isn't hard to do.

Larry,

I know the concert on the website is not hard to do. The problem it causes is that it takes so long to load like the clip you have. Whenever I go to the site it takes about 5-10 minutes for it to load. People lose interest when anything on the site takes a long time to load. It will not initially be a part of the site, but maybe later on.

The concert at the Dell was off the hook last night. It was the best of old school and new school. Russell & The New Stylistics sang all the pretty love songs and had all the suave and sleek moves, while Gerald Levert had his own brand of grit, sweat, and down and dirty songs and moves that made the women go wild. It was interesting to see the old with the new. Something for everyone, no matter what the age. It was a great concert. I'd like to see that lineup again.

What absolutely sad news to read this about Chris. This is the honest truth -- she crossed my mind today while I was at work. I thought of coming home and checking her website and thinking that she hadn't posted on this forum in quite a while. What shock and sadness this brings to my heart. Though I never met her, I liked her as we shared something in common -- the love of some real good music. My heart and prayers go out to Chris' family and loved ones who after recently losing Chris' husband must now deal with losing her. I will keep them in my prayers. Thanks for letting us know TFFP.

Hello Truefansfromeverywhere.

On Friday night my daughter and I attended a private affair (at the invitation of Piano Man) in Long Beach, CA. I got to see and hear Russell Thompkins, Jr. and the New Stylistics up close and personal. Let me tell you, they were absolutely fantastic! Just as others who have seen them have told us, they were impeccable in their stage presence, the harmony was tight, and Russell moved on stage in a way I have never seen him move. I had a wonderful time and am ready to go see them again when they are performing in our city. Thanks guys for a wonderful evening! All I can say is, if you want to see a Stylistics performance you can feel, make sure it's the real deal!

MoMotown,

I'm glad you enjoyed the show. That new and relaxed movement that you saw Russell do was because he loves what he's doing now and the people in the organization are all positive with only one goal in mind, to make it the best they can. It seems to be working pretty good. They have been getting accolades, such as yours, from tons of people all over the country. I hope to make the next trip to California so I can meet you and other West coast fans. Believe me, it's people like you that have kept Russell going. He has such a loyal fan base.

FJT, Piano Man,
Thank you for the invitation to see Russell Thompkins, Jr and the new Stylistics at the Long Beach Hilton on Friday evening. Phyllis and I really wanted to be there to enjoy the sounds of our favorite vocalist. Phyllis took my daughter to a scheduled rehearsal that evening that went beyond the time we were to meet up with Piano Man. She could have dropped me off, but due to my physical condition at this time, I would've needed her to be with me to give me help and support.
Piano Man is good as gold, and with his busy schedule, I appreciate him taking the time to accommodate us.
FJT, thank you for being so kind and real. You all are the best, without-a-doubt.

TrueOldNewFanFromPhilly,
My spiritual advisor, give a brotha' a holla when ya can,
don

Hi Don, I've been thinking about you as well. I was hoping to meet you and Phyllis at the Long Beach affair. Please know that my thoughts and prayers for devine intervention are with you. We know He is able. I once wrote down your e-mail address from the old bulletin board but have since lost it. I would like to make sure we keep in touch. Talk to you later.

Don,

I have also been thinking about you and Russell and I wish you all the best and you will stay in our thoughts and prayers. The words that keep echoeing in my head after Russell met you a few months ago is "that brotha' sure can sing." He was truly impressed by your vocal ability. Always keep a song in your heart and all will be right in the world. Give Phyllis my best. I know she is your source of inspiration. Stay strong.

FJT, Piano Man, TFFP/ONF
Thank you all for your beautiful words.
Just knowing that you're praying and thinking of me gives me strength. You do not know how much you mean to me. I'm sittin' here cheezin' heavily over Russell's comment...I mean...coming from the one who has gifted the world with the most beautiful sounding, unique, falsetto ever, means a GRIP!
Phyllis has been more than wonderful to me. God is truly the Source of her love to me.

MoMotown,
God bless you for your thoughts and prayers. I too was hoping we all could have met in Long Beach. I know Russell and the new Stylistics were off the chain. They can't help it!

FJT,
Can you or Piano Man or someone tell me who wrote and arranged that beautiful song "I Believe In You?" I have a copy of the cd "Special," but it has no written info on it.
Also, has anyone heard from IBY, Kareem, or Sty?

Hello Everyone!

Piano Man, it was good to speak with you for a moment. I told my friend about the show at The Beacon & she was so enthused, that she bought three tickets. Her husband is also a great fan. I'll try to get her to visit here to express her thoughts. I just wanted Russ, Florence & yourself to know that you'll have 3 more diehards in the house, come Sept 18th. I look forward to finally meeting you all in my fair city!

Peace!

Don,

I'm pretty sure that Maurice Starr wrote "I Believe In You." I will check the vinyl and see if there are any liner notes. Hope you and Phyllis are doing well. Sty emails me on my personal email about once a week. He is doing well. I haven't heard from IBY or Kareem. If you guys are out there give us a holler.

Juicefree,

Look forward to meeting you at the Beacon show.

FJT,
I just saw on vh1.com that on 9/7/04 the Stylistics have a cd to be released entitled "Loving You." I guess I'm hoping that there was an error in the groups name, and that it should've read "Russell Thompkins, Jr and the New Stylistics" instead of the "Stylistics."
I know my brother has been working on his new cd, and I was just wondering was this it, or is it the other guys.
love forever,
don

Don,

That's not Russell. His CD is not finished yet. It sounds like the other guys are releasing another compilation. They haven't done any studio work since Russell left the group.

Bobby,

Did receive the message. Russell will be getting back to you shortly.

Hi Mrs Thompkins,

DO you know if they'll allow us to take pictures during the show at The Beacon? I'd like to present some pictures here of Russell & the fellas doing their thing & am hoping that would be possible. I'm sure that would get a great reaction here, what do you think :-)

I was in chicago over the labor day holiday listening to the radio. Hurb kent a radio disk jockey had and old school battle of the best. The stylistics vs the dells. This was old school at its best.I know mr thompkins knows hurb kent because he was mc at a stylistics concert in chicago at the arrie crown theater.Hurb kent ALWAYS PLAYS STYLISTICS SONGS ON HIS PROGRAM.Hurb kent needs to know that russell thompkins and the new stylistics are out there touring again.v103 is the radio station. Hurb kent is a radio hall of fame dj from chicago. He is a true stylistics fan.If possible fjt please let mr thompkins know that all hurb kent talks about is how russell thompkins is the best lead singer ever. I grew up listening to hurb kent on the radio playing song after song by the stylistics.

Juice,

You can take pictures at the Beacon. You just can't take videos. Piano Man's wife took pictures the last time we were there and we were all the way up in the nose bleed section , but the pictures came out pretty good.

Larry,

Russell knows Herb Kent and he has already done a couple of interviews with him over the last year. Herb is a DJ legend and Russell does appreciate the fact that he has always played the music.

Too bad most of you don't live in the Chicago area. WMAQ-TV, Chicago's NBC affiliate produced a special celebrating WVON-MA Radio's 40th anniversary. Herb Kent, E. Rodney Jones, Bill "Butterball" Crane and others were featured and interviewed. Don Cornelius began his career at WVON. He was a Chicago police officer who pulled over one of the radio execs for a traffic violation. This exec thought Don had an excellent voice and suggested that he come down to the station for an audition. Don did, and the rest is history. He became an announcer and later created the "Soul Train" TV show. The original show was produced locally for WCIU-TV, Channel 26 and was broadcast from the penthouse of the Board of Trade Building in the Loop. Herb Kent has been doing radio for 5 decades.

Dvdmike i recall all of that. As a kid we even took a school field trip to the radio station wvon.E Rodney Jones was on the air when we visited. The stylistics were big in chicago and herb and the others had them on all the time.I SAW THE STYLISTICS ON THE CHICAGO SOUL TRAIN SINGING STONE IN LOVE WITH YOU IN STREET CLOTHS.I saw them at the burning spear nite club ,and the arrie crown theater .They were on midnight special and don kirshners rock concert. I even saw them on mike douglas, diana shore, and saturday night live.As a kid i recorded all tv stylistics singing on a cheap small 15.00 dollar tape recorder.

Thank you for Sty's email address. I will contact him shortly.
Phyllis and I are doing fine. Like Russell, I have been blessed and favored with a virtuous woman, whose worth and value is far above rubies.

DvdMike,
Larry Strong,
Thanks for sharing that bit of Chicago's history. I would've loved to have heard that battle of the Stylistics vs the Dells. It doesn't get any better than that.

Larry, I haven't forgotten, my friend.

Hello Mrs Thompkins and Mr Russell
I am very proud to read your thread and know that my dad is a friend of yours..He is having the same problems with promoters that know the difference in the name but use it as they see fit..When my dad and Mr Thompkins let them know the new name of their group is Wilbert Hart and the New Delfonics/delphonics...Russell Thompkins and the New Stylistics...the promoters will just use what they want...but then don't say the artist did not let you know the correct way to use the name...the new name let the public know just whose group is coming to town. When the public see and hear the two new groups they know the difference automatically.
