I've been on the forum only a few days, and already I'm getting nostalgic for my old 45 collection, which got lost when I went into the military in the 50s. Based on some posts--and a minimal amount of money to spend on a basic CD collection--I'm listing what I'd like to buy. Any additions or replacements ... keeping in mind that I can't stock up on individual performers?? Standing in the Shadows of Motown [SOUNDTRACK] (Audio CD) ~ Various Artists - Soundtracks - 2002 Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971 [BOX SET] (Audio CD) ~ Various Artists - R&B/Soul - Motown AND the next in the series Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection 1972-1992 ~ Various Artists (Audio CD) Alan Slutsky mentioned a new collection, but I don't know the title, and it might be too technically oriented for me anyway. By the way, I do have The Big Chill soundtrack. Do my ears deceive me, or can that be considered a Motown compilation? I checked the archives, and I couldn't find the answer. Thanks so much, Sis. I'll get that one instead of the one disc version. |

Hey Bob, The Hitsville USA 59-71 is a great set! You really can't go wrong with that one. Some other cool soul sets: Stax Records (1st boxed set) - 9cds total. Kinda pricey but good. Beg, Scream, & Shout - It comes in a 45s box with trading cards of all the artists on the collection. No single artist gets more than one song! It has big hits along side with smaller hits. It might be out of print but it would be good to look for used. |

The First Hitsville USA box is the best place to start with currently available releases. It has a great cross section of tracks and focuses on exactly what Motown did best: churn out great singles. It features the original single mixes of all of the tracks appearing on it, and is probably the closest you will get to the sound you remember on your 45s. The "Beg Scream and Shout" set is excellent, but not only is it out of print, it also is usually very expensive if you find it used these days.
